1977: Inaugural Season (1-10) -- <strong>Charlotte</strong> earns its first win in program history,<br />

defeating Sacred Heart, 18-9.<br />

1978: (5-13) -- Swept Sacred Heart. First year for coach Marinelle Wilhite...Paula<br />

Edmund had a team-leading 14 RBI with a .520 batting average.<br />

1979: First Winning Season (23-7) -- Rita Barrett hits .511 and knocks out 10<br />

home runs to lead the 49ers to a second seed in the NCAIAW Division II State<br />

Tournament.<br />

1980: (22-5) -- The Niners earn the top seed in the NCAIAW state tournament...<br />

The team records the programs 50th win, a 14-3 victory over Mars Hill...Stella<br />

Johnson and Missy Speas lead <strong>Charlotte</strong> with .554 and .551 averages, respectively.<br />

1981: (29-10) -- School record 44 runs scored by Sharon Crocker.<br />

1982: (28-22) -- Third-place at AIAW state and national tourneys...Stella Johnson<br />

earned All-National team recognition for her tournament performance...Program’s<br />

100th win comes on April 20 against Pembroke State, 7-3.<br />

1983: (31-20) -- Beverly Crump named All-State (NCAIAW).<br />

1984: (17-15) -- Beverly Crump bats .404 with 30 RBI.<br />

1985: (34-8) -- Most wins in a season to that date.<br />

1986: (11-23) -- First season of fast-pitch play.<br />

1987: (10-35) -- Cindy Zimmerman led the team with two home runs and 27 RBI...<br />

Liby Fridy won the team MVP award due to 14 stolen bases and a .322 slugging<br />

percentage.<br />

1988: (34-20) -- First winning season of fast-pitch...Tied the then-school record for<br />

wins...Ace Wendy Stratton struck out 146 batters.<br />

win over UNC-Chapel Hill, 3-2, March 28 at West Meck High...Less than a<br />

week later, her three-hitter shuts out South Carolina, 1-0, for first-ever win over the<br />

Gamecocks...Senior Wendy Stratton caps her magnificent career in style...Catawba<br />

sends 21 batters up and Stratton sits 21 batters down to record first perfect game<br />

in 49ers history, 3-0.<br />

1991: (26-24-1) Hankes’ Marathon Season -- Courtney Hankes hurls 330.1 of<br />

344.1 innings, setting records for durability, including innings, starts (49), complete<br />

games (46), wins (24) and losses (23)...April 6 - Furman Spring Fling - Hankes<br />

begins pitching at 10 a.m. Saturday and finishes her sixth game, 41 innings and<br />

14.5 hours later, at 12:30 a.m. Sunday...The marathon day earns Hankes’ notes in<br />

NCAA News and Sports Illustrated...For the record, she goes 4-2 and is named the<br />

tournament’s top pitcher.<br />

1992: (15-29) -- Trisha Fox named honorable mention All-Region (NSCA)...Sets<br />

single-season marks for stolen bases (30) and HRs (5)...Also breaks career records<br />

for hits (180); HRs (10); stolen bases (77) and fielding pct. (.981).<br />

1993: (18-39) -- Tonya Berry ranked third nationally with 12 triples...Vivian Cagle<br />

grabs season (.375) and career (.330) batting titles.<br />

1994: (19-40) -- Tonya Berry finishes <strong>Charlotte</strong> career with all-time records for<br />
