The 49ers athletic department became fully-funded at the NCAA allowable levels for the fi rst time in school history. BIO Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose is one of the most successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation. At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third female to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000, she became the fi rst female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. She served a fi ve-year term (2000-2004) on that committee. She also completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). She is currently the chair of the Championship/Sports Management Cabinet. With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA and onto the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a program that for the fi rst time is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic scholarships. She has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of athletic facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength and conditioning programs, training and medical support to improve the experience of each and every student-athlete. She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events to Charlotte and has led the 49ers most aggressive push to add football to the Charlotte 49ers program, unveiling plans to start the program in 2013. The 49ers have enjoyed similar success in competition and the classroom. Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA play, or both. Prior to her stint as A.D., only two programs touted such success. Meanwhile, the athletic department now boasts a cumulative GPA of over 3.0 and Charlotte has won fi ve of the last 10 A-10 Scholar- Athlete of the Year Awards. Barnhardt Center/Halton Arena, Irwin Belk Track and Field/Transamerica Field, the Wachovia Fieldhouse, the Miltimore-Wallis Athletics and Academic Training Center, the Short Game Golf Practice Facility at Rocky River Golf Club and Robert and Mariam Hayes Baseball Stadium. Helped attract 1994 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 1996 NCAA Woman’s Final Four, 1999 and 2000 NCAA Div. I Men’s Soccer College Cups, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and a variety of NCAA Basketball Tournament rounds to Charlotte.
Charlotte Softball Home of Niners Softball Since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2005, D.L. Phillips has become a treacherous place for Niner opponents to play at with the 49ers posting a winning record in each of the previous four seasons. Last season, Charlotte posted the third-most home victories with 22. Over the past four seasons, Charlotte is 57-30 at D.L. Phillips Complex good for a winning percentage of .655. This year, the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex will have a different feel to it for fans and players as new bleachers were put in behind home plate for improved viewing of the field. The bleachers feature 300 total seats with a mixture of chair-back seats and metal bleachers with back support. The new seats will add to the atmosphere at D.L. Phillips, which hosted the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament when the 49ers reached the championship game. The softball complex also features bullpens, batting cages, a press box, a concessions stand as well as lighting allowing the Niners to play night games. The softball team’s locker room and coaches’ offices are located in Wachovia Fieldhouse, which overlooks the field. Each player has their own individual locker in the fieldhouse.
