Where: The <strong>Turks</strong> & <strong>Caicos</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s are 575 miles southeast of Miami — a mere 70 minutes flying time — with the Bahamas 30 miles<br />

to the northwest <strong>and</strong> the Dominican Republic 100 miles to the southeast.<br />

The <strong>Turks</strong> & <strong>Caicos</strong> total 166 square miles of l<strong>and</strong> area on eight isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> forty small cays <strong>and</strong> are encircled by one of the largest<br />

coral reefs in the world. The country’s population is approximately 32,000.<br />

Travel: Providenciales International Airport is the main port of entry for air travellers. A major terminal expansion project is<br />

scheduled for completion in <strong>2015</strong>. Direct flights are available via major carriers from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami,<br />

Newark, New York, <strong>and</strong> Philadelphia in the U.S. <strong>and</strong> from Halifax (seasonal), Montreal, Ottawa (seasonal) <strong>and</strong> Toronto in<br />

Canada. There is a connection via Nassau to London/Heathrow, as well as direct flights to Nassau, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican<br />

Republic, <strong>and</strong> Puerto Rico. There are scheduled inter-isl<strong>and</strong> air <strong>and</strong> ferry services, as well as FBOs to cater to private planes.<br />

Talk: English, with many other languages spoken by a multi-cultural resident population.<br />

Time: Eastern Daylight Savings Time observed all year (GMT –5:00).<br />

Money: US dollar. Travellers’ checks in US dollars <strong>and</strong> American Express, VISA, <strong>and</strong> MasterCard are welcomed at many locations.<br />

Temperature: The average year-round temperature is 83ºF (28ºC). The hottest months are September <strong>and</strong> October, when the temperature<br />

can reach 90 to 95ºF (33 to 35ºC). Steady easterly tradewinds temper the heat. Average annual rainfall is 40 inches.<br />

Getting in: Passports are required, along with a valid onward or return ticket for non-residents. Visitors can stay up to 90 days.<br />

Getting out: Departure tax is US$20 for all persons two years <strong>and</strong> older.<br />

Customs: Visitors may bring in duty free one carton of cigarettes or cigars, one bottle of liquor or wine <strong>and</strong> some perfume. Importing<br />

firearms, spear guns, Hawaiian slings, controlled drugs, <strong>and</strong> pornography are illegal.<br />

Transport: You can use a valid driver’s license from home when renting vehicles. Driving is on the left-h<strong>and</strong> side of the road. Give<br />

way at all roundabouts: give way to any vehicle approaching from your right. Seat belt laws are strictly enforced. Taxis are abundant<br />

throughout the Isl<strong>and</strong>s, but are not metered.
