We have officially launched our Nevada Association of REALTORS ® Global Business Committee which will assist all of the Associations to create local Global Business Committees charged with educating our Members on global and multicultural business opportunities. The global trend begins and expands beyond real estate. Money, as a general rule, seeks safety and calculated gain. When people invest beyond borders it’s because they recognize the possibility for decent profit with minimal risk— where there are economic growth potentials and safe havens for profit. Recognizing the importance of the world market and the evolution of business culture toward co-empowerment and collaboration, the “Nevada Regional Development Authority” has renamed itself “The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.” CEO Tom Skanke, at Preview Las Vegas 2013, encouraged attendees to see the bigger picture in today’s digital world. Our competition is not so much neighboring cities and states; it’s entire countries (countries that we don’t even share borders with). He suggests that we look at our neighbors (even distant cities with mutual benefit like Denver and Seattle) as allies to cooperate with in order to compete in the global market. The Alliance is now located at the InNEVation Center inside SWITCH demonstrating a much-needed and long overdue partnership between private and public sectors to diversify Nevada’s economy. Besides not having income tax, Nevada has tax incentives for industries to relocate here. Because of our environment and weather, we are a perfect location for anything related to technology from medical training to information warehousing. SOUTHERN NEVADA: RESET, REBUILD, RECOVER The Great Recession has changed how Southern Nevada businesses view their own practices and longheld beliefs—including a better understanding of the underlying strengths and weakness of our economy—and what kind of tax structure we need to support a vibrant JOHN RESTREPO PRINCIPAL, RCG ECONOMICS LLC modern economy. The local business community now understands the fundamental importance of an educated and skilled workforce. The Las Vegas business community also recognizes that the Las Vegas brand we market and the global image we portray do mean something when trying to attract investment, business expansion and relocation, and skilled and educated workers. There is a newly discovered sense of realism and pragmatism in both the business community and the governmental sector about Southern Nevada’s future. Most, if not all, of the economic and market indicators have either stabilized or are modestly improving, and have been doing so for more than a year. Specifically the following • B-1VISA OR BUSINESS VISA: The definition of business under immigration law is rather limited. Generally speaking, a B-1 visa holder is not permitted to work, receive payment from a US source (other than reimbursement for certain expenses), or run a business. Activities that are permitted on a B-1 visa will be discussed. • L-1 VISA: Multinational businesses can use this visa to transfer owners/shareholders, managers and employees to the U.S, if certain conditions are met. The individuals transferred can also obtain a green card eventually. • E-2 VISA: This is an investment-based visa that is country - specific only. The “E-2 visa” or the “treaty investor visa” is often the most viable option for many small businesses. Its purpose is to facilitate international business relations and foster investment in the United States by foreign nationals and corporations. • EB-5 VISA: The EB-5 visa is popularly known as the million-dollar visa and is available to qualified investors seeking permanent residence though investment in a new commercial enterprise. The basic requirements and minimum investment will be discussed in detail. Ten thousand immigrant visas per year are available under the EB-5 category.
