BURIED late in the year is a spooky event that 

makes our skin crawl and our hair stand on 

end. 

There is no escaping the spine tingling paranoia of 

being hunted by ghosts and ghouls on one of the creepiest 

days of the year. 

But Halloween doesn’t just have to be scary, it can also 

be a lot of fun. 

It’s a chance to dress up and pretend to be whatever 

creature you like, with no judgment at all. 

Even if you don’t want to dress up, it’s always fun to 

see what costumes other people come up with. 

This year, we’re getting into the Halloween spirit and 

celebrating all things creepy right here at the Redcliffe 

Leagues Club. 

Not only do we love a good ghost story but we also love 

to party and have fun, so we’re combining our two loves 

to create one extraordinary night. 

This Halloween we’re bringing out the cobwebs and 

calling all the ghosts because we are holding our very own 

Halloween Spooktacular and there are plenty of exciting 

party elements that are going to make up this fabulously 

frightful night. 

The first important piece of information is that this 

party will most definitely involve costumes. 

Dress up any way you like, but make sure your costume 

is the best it can possibly be, as the best dressed on the 

night will win a spooktacular prize. 

It wouldn’t be a real party without food and drinks. You 

will be welcomed into our haunted gaming room with a 

delightfully ghoulish beverage to help you get into the 

spirit of the night. 

Then indulge in our delicious and appropriately themed 

canapés served throughout the evening on the gaming

mesmerised by the entertainment. 

Our eerie entertainers will crawl through the crowds 

and captivate you with their skills and spookiness. 

These creepy crawlers will include a devil violinist who 

will capture your attention with her haunting melodies

addition to your outfit. 

Maleficent will even make an appearance, standing 

guard outside her lair, also known as the community 

gaming floor.

I WAS not able to attend 

ONE of the real 

highlights of the year 

for us was hosting our 

1965 premiership players 

and their wives to 

celebrate their 50th 

anniversary. 

The club hosted a lovely 

dinner and evening, then next 

day the couples were our 

guests at a home Dolphins 

game. 

What a great bunch as they 

were very, very appreciative 

for what we put on for them 

and quick to give credit for 

their success elsewhere, away 

from themselves. 

A really moving moment 

was when the 1965 players 

came down to the dressing 

sheds and presented the 

current team with the same 

coloured jerseys they wore. 

There was the odd tear in 

the eyes for the older 

gentlemen while the current 

boys got to see what it meant 

to the former premiership 

boys. It was a real pleasure to 

spend time with these former 

players who are all very 

humble men. 

It was great to hear about 

big George Gledhill, who had 

a reputation for throwing 

opposition players around the 

field. George said he never 

started any trouble but as one 

teammate quipped, “but you 

always finished it”. 

On a tour of our facilities 

they were amazed at what was 

on offer in the weights room, 

ice baths and medical 

treatment. 

One 1965 veteran said he 

was sent home wrapped in a 

bandage with soda powder to 

treat a swollen ankle. That 

compares with today’s almost 

immediate MRI, specialist 

attention and keyhole surgery 

that can have players on their 

feet within days. 

The 1965 team vice-captain 

John Treeby gave us some 

insight into their incredible 

year and really emphasised 

the role former champion 

captain-coach Ken McCrohon 

had played in laying the 

foundations with a lot of these 

men in the preceding years. 

• TREVOR ‘Chippy’ Harken 

presents the No. 4 jersey to 

fellow centre Tom Opacic. 

John praised Ken’s 

contribution and gave him 

credit for the basis on which 

first grade football in our 

great club is built. 

On an interesting note, it 

was a little sad to see Ken’s 

grandson Sam Obst announce 

his retirement as a player, just 

short of his 35th birthday. 

Sam has had an outstanding 

career with the Dolphins in all 

his junior days, culminating 

in him playing in our first 

grade grand final in 1999. 

He was then recruited by 

the Roosters in Sydney before 

playing many years in the 

UK. He returned to Australia, 

playing with the Northern 

Pride and winning last year’s 

inaugural national second tier 

final over Penrith. 

The weekend was voted by 

many as good as they have 

had at the club and I found the 

entire event a great time and 

at times very moving. 

In a very sad post-script, 

the club learned of the passing 

of Keith Welsh, a member of 

our first A grade premiership 

squad, a week after the 

reunion. Keith lost his long 

battle with cancer and his 

effort to attend was 

remarkable. 

For Keith to make it to the 

reunion speaks volumes about 

the man, he was obviously not 

well but he just wanted to see 

his mates one more time and 

say his goodbyes. It was very 

emotional to witness. 

Keith was the 56th player 

in first grade for the Dolphins 

since the club entered the 

Brisbane A grade in 1960. 

In 1962, he was a member 

of the Dick “Tosser” Turner 

coached premiership-winning 

reserve grade side that 

defeated Valleys at Lang Park. 

In round 18 that season 

against Brothers, Keith had 

his first taste of first grade 

when Ken McCrohon brought 

him off the reserves bench. 

In total Keith played 45 

first grade matches in the then 

maroon and white jersey, 

crossing for 16 tries. 

Following his retirement 

from playing Keith wasn’t 

lost to the club, managing a 

number of teams in various 

grades during the 1970s.

SEVERAL announcements 

reiterated the fact 

that rugby league is a 

contact sport. 

Hot on the heels of Jon 

Green retiring came the 

same decision by Trent 

Richardson. 

Jon had a couple of great 

seasons with us but retired 

immediately after a head 

knock against Easts Tigers 

in round 23. It was third 

time this season he had 

suffered a head knock, 

causing the veteran frontrower 

to consider his 

playing future. 

Jon, 30, was an ideal club 

man on and off the paddock, 

leading our young pack and 

will be missed by everyone 

involved with the club. 

With a young family and 

trying to establish his 

business, he decided the 

risks weren’t worth it and 

the Dolphins support that 

decision and wish him all 

the very best for him and his 

family in the future. 

Hard man Trent also has 

been forced into retirement 

following a neck injury he 

received against Wynnum 

Manly late in the season. 

The tough lock was 

involved in a heavy collision 

and was left motionless on 

the Kougari Oval turf. 

A cornerstone of the pack, 

Trent was seen as a vital cog 

under new coach Anthony 

Griffin for the next few 

seasons. 

I saw Trent play for 

Norths Colts a few seasons 

ago and was keen then to 

lure him to Dolphin Oval. 

Unfortunately he was on 

a Broncos deal, however in 

the end he did come to 

Redcliffe and his ability to 

do a lot of the hard grind 

and tidying up around the 

ruck was much admired. 

I was also disturbed to 

hear former Dolphin and 

current Broncos under 20s 

fullback Paul Byrnes 

suffered a season-ending 

knee injury. 

Paul, who turned out with 

us last season, has 

undergone a full knee 

reconstruction after 

receiving the injury trying 

to save a try in the Broncos’ 

qualifying final loss to North 

Queensland last month.

Leagues Club, but he did say 

how keen he was to land 

merchandise for his 

grandchildren in the US state 

of Florida. 

He thought it was great that 

the Redcliffe football team 

was the Dolphins and the NFL 

team in Miami was the 

Dolphins as well.

Carnivals to bring millions 

of dollars to Peninsula 

THE final planning stages for our soon to be developed Dolphins Stadium are 

frantically under way to have the ground up and operational in some capacity, 

sometime about mid-year 2016. 

Already there is enormous 

interest from several different 

sporting organisations and the 

partnership by the Moreton 

Bay Regional Council with 

Sports Marketing Australia to 

engage sporting carnivals for 

the whole council area (which 

we hope to get our fair share 

of interest) will provide an 

economic windfall for the 

local council region. 

Two carnivals that have put 

their hand up take place on 

the first and last weekends of 

October this year. 

Those are the Queensland 

Murri Carnival and 

Queensland Touch Carnival, 

which have committed to this 

year with a vision of playing 

their carnivals on the new 

facilities in 2016 and beyond. 

Get in early and book your 

spot I say. 

Our meeting earlier in the 

year with Sports Marketing 

Australia revealed from its 

research that a visitor to a 

carnival is worth $234 per day 

to the local economy. 

This is generated by 

accommodation, meals, 

beverages, groceries, 

purchases from retail shops, 

entertainment, tourism and 

the list goes on. 

So we looked into what 

both the upcoming carnivals 

will bring to our area. The 

Murri Carnival conservatively 

expects about 55 teams to 

participate over a three-day 

period. 

The Queensland Touch 

Carnival expects a few less at 

about 52 teams competing. 

Let’s just say for the Murri 

Carnival each squad 

comprises about 25 people, 

which includes coaches, 

trainers, extra players etc. 

So we have 55 teams x 25 

squad members = 1375 team 

members. For every team we, 

within reason, expect about 

the same attendance in 

spectators. 

Again 2 x 1375 = 2750 

visitors for three days. Visitors 

2750 x three-day stay = 8250 

days at $234 per day spend = 

$1,930,500 injected into our 

economy. 

This is a conservative 

estimate as the Murri Carnival 

had about 25,000 people 

attend the carnival over three 

days last year (8333 people 

per day). Of course, most 

travelled out for the day. 

The Touch Carnival we 

estimate about 52 teams x 15 

members = 780 squad 

members x two (add 

spectators) = 1560 people x 

three days = 4650 days at 

$234 per day = $1,095,120. 

These two carnivals will 

hopefully inject more than $3 

million into Redcliffe’s local 

economy and we aim to repeat 

that on several occasions once 

the stadium is up and running. 

We envisage that we can 

attract about 10-15 carnivals 

to Redcliffe each year. Our 

goal is to participate as well in 

events and carnivals like the 

recently held Redcliffe 

Festival. 

The stadium will prove a 

tremendous job creator and 

fantastic asset to Redcliffe. 

There is no other venue of this 

size and quality anywhere 

within the Greater Brisbane 

Area. 

Bring on the train and bring 

on the stadium and let’s bring 

some welcome visitors to 

beautiful Redcliffe.

Members draw rockets 

THE members draw at Redcliffe 

Leagues Club is heading towards 

the magical five figures. 

Lucky member Dean Vella took home $8000 

on June 10 and the prize then reverted to 

$6000. 

However in the months since the tally has 

started to climb, almost reaching $9000. 

Under the revamped format introduced last 

year, the members draw is held on Thursday 

nights as well as the usual Wednesday evening 

draw. 

And if the jackpot does not go off, it goes up 

by $100, although once it reaches $10,000 it 

stays at that amount until won. 

There are three draws guaranteed every 

Wednesday and Thursday night, whereas 

previously the draws would stop if the prize

John jags $5200 prize 

MEMBER John Stevenson thought 

his chances of taking out the 

Birthday Card Draw were slim. 

The draw on Thursday, August 27 changed 

John’s mind for good as he went home with 

$5200 worth of vouchers. 

“I was very pleased,” the Redcliffe resident 

said. “It was a hell of a shock and I would like 

to thank the club very much for its promotion. 

“It’s a great prize and I’m thrilled. The prize 

is so good because it rewards members with 

vouchers that can be used for groceries and 

petrol and I’ve already bought some clothes.” 

John, member number 43156, and his wife 

Carol have been club members since 2002 

when they arrived from Sydney. 

“We have been going to the birthday draws 

for each of us over the years but I knew the 

chances of winning were pretty slim,” he said. 

“I never expect to win and I didn’t expect to 

win this time either. We have started using the 

vouchers already and have almost cleaned out 

one each.” 

The retired Stevensons make use of their 

local club, attending at least twice a week to 

play the pokies as well as have a meal. 

The format switch of the Birthday Card 

Draw during 2014 was such a success that the 

club management retained the format for this 

year. 

One lucky member claims the major $5200 

prize on the last Thursday of the month. 

Between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, the club draws 

one lucky member from the birthday barrel to 

take home a year’s worth of groceries or fuel to 

the value of $5200 in Coles/Myer gift vouchers. 

As with every Birthday Card Draw held, the 

winner must be present to win. 

If you aren’t present when your name is 

called out, another name is pulled out until a 

winner can be found. 

This month’s Birthday Card Draw is on 

Thursday, October 29.

MELBOURNE Cup is a spectacular 

day in the sporting calendar. 

It combines a love of racing with a flair for 

fashion. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, 

you can’t escape the excitement that surrounds 

this iconic Australian event, and this year we 

have some fantastic plans for the special day. 

To start with, you can join us on the ground 

floor of the club and participate in the vibrant 

race day atmosphere. 

The sports bar there will have hot snacks 

and themed drinks to ensure that the scene is 

set for the perfect day. 

There is also an outstanding line-up of 

entertainment planned, starting with the 

Midnight Groove Trio, who will play from 

10.30am until 2.15pm. 

Entertainment will stop as the race is played 

live across the club and will pick up again with 

soloist Rhonnie and her guitar from 2.30pm 

until 5.30pm. 

If that wasn’t enough, there will be two 

roving entertainers to captivate you from 

10.30am until 12.30pm. 

For the fun-seekers among you, there will be 

some additional activities set up just for you. 

You could try your hand at table tennis or get 

tangled up in twister. 

For the competitive at heart, try your luck 

with our pick the winner Recliffe Dolphins app 

promotion or scour the club with our scavenger 

hunt, where the winners will take home a great 

prize. 

Keep an eye out for more details as the day 

draws closer. 

More prizes will be given away for the best 

dressed lady, gent and best hat. 

This fabulous fashion show will take place 

in the Legends Lounge from 1pm, so make 

sure you get a good viewing position to admire 

the race day fashions. 

If you’re a bingo fan, don’t worry! You 

won’t miss out on the festivities, as there will 

be a special fashion show exclusively for you. 

The lucky person with the best hat in the 

bingo hall will take home a special prize. 

If exclusivity is what you would prefer on 

this special race day, we also have something 

for you. 

We will be holding a buffet lunch in our 

Presidents Room for those who want to 

celebrate the day in style. 

If you join us for this function, you will be 

entertained by Ronnie Christie and will enjoy a 

buffet lunch before the race begins. Your ticket 

to this event even includes a glass of champagne 

on arrival. There will be a separate fashion 

show for those who attend this function, which 

will take place from 1.30pm.

do we love sport in general, 

but we especially love it when 

sport brings people together. 

Right at this very moment, 

we are celebrating this sense 

of world-wide community 

that has been brought about 

by the Rugby World Cup. 

Twenty teams from around 

the world, including Australia, 

are currently in England, battling 

it out to see who will be 

the best rugby team in the 

world. Australia is facing the 

added struggle of playing in 

cold weather, something 

which we aren’t particularly 

used to. But they are playing 

hard none-the-less and are 

making it an event not to miss. 

It is this competition that 

has inspired us to re-invent 

our World Cup themed buffet 

in Dolphins HQ. 

Every Thursday night 

throughout October, we invite 

you to join us for our Rugby 

World Cup Buffet. 

The selection will include a 

line-up of multicultural dishes, 

so you can get involved in 

the atmosphere of the world 

cup without leaving the country. 

Start your meal with a taste 

of Scotland by trying some

IN the past few months we’ve sampled 

dishes from all over the world. 

From the Philippines, to the Ukraine, to 

New Zealand and back home to Australia, 

we’ve certainly been on a culinary trip. 

This journey is all thanks to the amazing 

chefs here at the club who have put their 

favourite dishes on display and shared their 

stories with us. 

This month, the chef in the spotlight is 

one you may already know about. 

Peter Hurley is head chef and catering 

manager here at the club. Peter has been 

with us for more than six years and has consistently 

been delivering delicious meals and 

friendly smiles all throughout that time. 

When deciding what to choose for his 

dish, Peter wanted to pick something that 

would taste delicious, as well as something 

that was meaningful to him. 

It is for this reason that Peter has picked 

a dish that is a tribute to his family heritage. 

He can trace his lineage back to Ireland, 

which is what has inspired the creative dish 

that he will be sharing with us this month. 

The dish is grilled pork cutlet with colcannon 

and a seeded mustard and apple 

glaze. It is a modern take on tradition, as it 

incorporates several elements that are fundamental 

parts of the Irish cuisine.

This change to the old Super 6 

isn’t the only change that will take 

place on this day. As of October 12, 

some of the items on the menu will 

increase in price slightly. 

The items that will be affected 

will be the roast of the day, the daily 

specials and the Chef’s Best.

able to continue to do so, we need to 

spend a little bit more to purchase 

the best quality produce. 

Not only does this mean that you

that we can continue to provide you 

with the best quality of meals possible. 

From October 12, the roast of the 

day will increase to $16 for members 

and $18 for non-members.

Redcliffe Old Boys hit boards 

OUR September social was a sensational 

night of sport, laughs and great company 

at the home of the Redcliffe Dart 

Associations. 

We were treated exceptionally well by 

our hosts. Their members were gracious 

in accepting our ability to throw darts 

was very limited (except for a couple of 

us). A special thank-you to Patty for 

organising everything and for tending the 

bar all night. 

Although not an official Old Boys 

function, a few of us and partners headed 

out to Surat to catch up with long-time 

member Michael (Fester) Clanchy. 

We also ran into a few former Old 

Boys and former Redcliffe residents who 

just happened to be in the same place at 

the same time. 

One downside was one of the partners 

complained that she was so sore from 

laughing too much. Should be more of it 

I reckon. 

It just happened to also be the weekend 

of the Annual Surat Cup race meeting. 

Redcliffe was also represented there by 

its number one jockey in Lyall Appo. 

This month on the 18th we host the 

Wynnum Old Boys for a lawn bowls 

competition at Scarborough Bowls Club. 

We will be playing for the Ron Pascoe 

Shield. If anyone is interested in joining 

us for the day contact Happy Manning on

Our annual dinner is on Saturday, 

November 14. Again, numbers to Happy 

as soon as possible. 

As this is catered for us by the fabulous 

crew at the Leagues Club, we need to 

finalise numbers by November 7. No 

tickets will be available after that date.

children’s presents will also be sent out to 

members shortly. The presents will be

Green can only see 

blue skies ahead 

FIRST-YEAR coach Daniel Green 

can’t wait for the 2016 season to 

roll around. 

Far from being disappointed at his 

BRL A grade side being tipped out in an 

elimination semi, Green can only see 

positives. 

“I’m happy with how the season ended 

up,” he said. “I see my role as filtering 

players through to first grade, not so 

much as winning premierships. 

“And the improvement I saw in the 

players that came back to me and then 

returned to first grade was very 

gratifying.” 

And Green had some numbers to work 

with. A staggering 42 players turned out 

in the red and white in the BRL A grade. 

“That is a very high number no matter 

what way you look at it and means you 

virtually have a different side every 

weekend,” he said. 

“We did not have a core group of 

players to base our game on but as a first 

year coach I saw the development of the 

players we fielded.” 

Green was quick to single out Ash 

Harawira as his player of the season. The 

unheralded 22-year-old played virtually 

every position bar the halves, putting in 

whole-hearted performances. 

“I saw Ash play at the back end of last 

season when I was helping out Pine 

Rivers,” Green said. 

“He blew me away this season because 

in every position he played in he did the 

job. The attitude he has, the way he treats 

people and approaches footy is first class.

“He is very raw and has not been 

coached before. Once Hook takes over I 

am sure he will develop under him next 

year. 

“I will bet my last five dollars on him 

playing first grade next season. I have no 

doubts that he has a big future and will 

feature a lot in first grade this coming 

season. His utility value is immense.” 

Green also sang the praises of prop 

Marty Cordwell, who gained 

representative honours and was among 

the best all season, along with Alex 

Bishop and Kyle Van Klavern. 

Youngster Alex Albert came up from 

the Colts and played his part on the wing. 

The Dolphins ran up against affiliate 

club the Sandgate Gaters in an elimination 

final. 

“The Gaters had the wood on us during 

the season, winning both times during the 

season proper before beating us in the 

semi,” Green said. 

“It was a bitter pill to swallow as quite 

a few of them played with us during the 

season and they also trained with us, so it 

came back to bite us.” 

In the final, dynamic fullback Marlon 

Doak, who turned out for the second half 

of the Intrust Super Cup season with the 

Dolphins, teamed with half Bobby 

Goulding to dump Redcliffe out. 

“I did say tongue in cheek at the start 

of the season that was what would happen

“I was so excited to do this role and I 

was stoked that Bob Jones entrusted me 

to undertake it,” he said. “He must have 

seen something in me and I threw myself 

100 per cent into the role. 

“I have signed on for next season and 

I’m sure I will be so much better and I am 

already looking forward to next season. I 

have had a chat with Hook, and as I 

played under him, I already have a 

relationship with him. I want to be a 

coach like him … hard but fair. He just 

wants the best out of his players.”

FORMER Dolphin Justin Hunt will join his fourth 

NRL club next season. 

Hunt, who has been signed by Wests Tigers on a 

one-year deal, debuted for South Sydney in 2012 

and has played a total of 21 NRL games across 

three clubs, including Parramatta and most recently 

St George Illawarra. 

The 26-year-old played seven NRL games for the 

Dragons this year and can cover wing or fullback. 

Tigers coach Jason Taylor said Hunt would 

bolster the club’s depth next season. He will join 

the NRL squad when players return for pre-season 

training next month.

THE 2015 season of the RealWay 

Junior Dolphins has wrapped up after 

a lengthy finals period. 

The finals format of the Stingers has 

been evolving in recent seasons to 

enable club volunteers to participate in 

as many games as possible and plays 

out over four weekends. 

Several teams made it through semifinals 

and preliminary finals in 

September. In the end there were six 

junior Dolphins teams successfully 

proceeding to grand finals in their 

graded divisions. 

The results were:
