Dolphin Stadium takes shape

STAGE One of our Dolphin 

Stadium is under way and 

builders Paynter Dixon have 

already achieved milestones at 

this early point in construction. 

We have our fingers crossed that 

the weather maintains its current 

level and allows us to get the stadium 

out of the ground. 

If we have a significant downpour 

during this critical time of 

earthworks, we could end up with a 

massive pile of mud as the hills are 

very much exposed. 

I invited Moreton Bay Regional 

Mayor, Cr Allan Sutherland, to view 

the progress and Allan was suitably 

impressed. 

I told Allan that once completed, 

this stage would allow 4000 fans 

seated comfortably and sitting right 

on top of the action. 

We envisage that the heavy 

machinery will be off the turf of 

Dolphin Oval in May, allowing a 

returf and repair of the western side 

of the playing field. 

A solid working platform for 

cranes etc was needed to be laid to 

hold the heavy machinery. 

This encroached about 10 metres 

on the playing surface, which will 

need tender loving care to allow our 

football players to grace Dolphin 

Oval once again. 

During this period we have two 

home games which will be allocated 

to neighbouring clubs or to a close 

country ground. 

The QRL has certain standards 

required to allow a QRL Intrust 

Super Cup game to be held, which 

eliminates many local grounds 

nearby. 

However, once these games are 

allocated and approved by the QRL, 

our fans will be informed. 

Once the ground is repaired, 

games can take place at Dolphin 

Oval once more. 

This will allow patrons to view 

games on the Eastern Hill while 

construction continues on the 

Western Grand stand. 

Services are available during this 

time with amenities, canteen and a 

temporary beer booth all included in 

the current Eastern Hill facilities. 

Shade is provided by the trees on the 

top of the Eastern Hill. 

Hopefully we will complete the 

stand about late July or early August 

and have a heap of back-ended home 

games to finish the year with. 

The first half of the season will be 

difficult for our Dolphins, but if we 

finish round one in good shape, it 

will be a great sea breeze to carry us 

home for the remainder of the 2016 

season, and hopefully on to ultimate 

glory at the revamped Dolphin 

Stadium.

at any of our restaurants, café, bars 

or bottleshop, or turning over $5 on 

any electronic gaming machine. 

Whichever way you chose to 

spend your money here at the club, 

be sure to hand over your card to our 

friendly staff when you make a 

purchase, or have your membership 

card interested into the gaming 

machines while you’re playing. 

Your tickets accumulate 

automatically and are stored in our 

virtual barrel. They begin accruing 

from 10am on Friday morning and 

continue right through until the last 

draw at 10pm that same night. After 

the last winner is found, the barrel is 

emptied for the next week’s draw –

being celebrated one day of the 

year, the same goes for the offering

Stadium construction steams ahead 

WORK on the Dolphin 

Stadium has jumped 

into top gear over the 

past month. 

Members and visitors 

would have noticed that 

excavation work has been full 

on and that machinery has 

chewed into the hill and piers 

have been sunk. 

We have been fortunate 

that the weather by and large 

has been favourable and no 

major problems have been 

reported. 

I’m sure we will run into a 

hitch somewhere down the 

track, but for now it’s all 

systems go for our new-look 

stadium.

I TRAVELLED to 

Mudgeeraba on the Gold 

Coast last month to watch 

the Dolphins’ first trial of 

the 2016 season. 

Despite the wet conditions 

in the second half, I came 

away impressed with coach 

Adam Mogg and his team’s 

outing against the Burleigh 

Bears. 

Adam gave a run to quite 

a few newcomers as well as 

members of the 2014 Colts 

premiership side in Josh 

Beehag, Tyson Cleal, 

Rinsma Saueha, Tyson 

Gamble and Hayden 

Hansen. 

English import Danny 

Bridge and John Fox, 

returning from injury, also 

were strong in our victory 

while big prop Charlie 

Faingaa was tremendous in 

the tough stuff. 

With a drier track 

expected at Bishop Park in 

our second trial, I am 

expecting big things with 

Luke Capewell back at the 

helm with Tyson Andrews 

also on display. 

Usual centre Tom Opacic 

is missing at the moment as 

he and Aaron Whitchurch 

have been training with the 

Broncos in the off-season. 

For the second successive 

year, Tom has scored a trip 

to the World Club Series in 

England after making the 

most of his opportunities 

across the ditch in the 

Auckland Nines while 

Aaron scored two tries 

against the Cowboys in the 

mud at Bundaberg. 

Barring injuries to the 

Broncos star backs, we are 

expecting Tom and Aaron 

back in the red and white 

for the start of the Intrust 

Super Cup.

WITH local government 

elections on March 19, now is 

a fitting time to pay tribute to 

Moreton Bay Regional Shire 

Mayor Allan Sutherland and 

Cr Jim Houghton. 

Our club is grateful to these 

two representatives for their 

enormous support over the 

years as we have taken the 

Dolphins forward with the 

development of the Dolphins 

Health Precinct, Dolphins 

Central and now Dolphin 

Stadium. 

The Dolphins appreciate 

what they have done over the 

years and, regardless of the 

poll result, acknowledge their 

hard work and dedication to 

what can be a thankless task. 

I believe Redcliffe and the 

shire in general have fared 

well under Allan’s two terms 

of leadership with the local 

economy holding its own and 

looking to a strong future with 

the delivery of the Moreton 

Bay rail link. 

Jim was a member of our 

inaugural first grade 

premiership side and has kept 

his ties with the local 

community. He has worked 

closely with us on several 

projects and his guidance is 

invaluable. 

Cr Koliana Winchester of 

Division 6 is also a Leagues 

Club member who has shown 

considerable interest in 

pushing sporting interests on 

the Peninsula. 

We’ve enjoyed Koliana’s 

involvement with the football 

club during her term including 

her assistance to launch a 

local Zonta project at our 

Capras home game last year.

OUR club suffered a sad 

loss last month with the 

passing of Neil “Gravel” 

O’kamura. 

A former Dolphins player 

and official, Neil was a 

popular and well-respected 

member of our club for 

more than 60 years. 

During that time he 

served the club in many 

roles, including as a player, 

coach, team manager, 

doubles seller and 

committeeman. 

He was one of those men 

you could rely on whenever 

volunteers were needed. It 

didn’t matter what the 

occasion whether a working 

bee or junior barbecue, he 

would be there to help out. 

As a player, Neil won 

premierships for the 

“Shellgrit” in the 1955 and 

1956 Murrumba reserve 

grade competitions. 

In 1958, he was a member 

of the club’s BRL reserve 

grade side, our first senior 

side to play in the Brisbane 

Rugby League competition. 

The following year he was 

part of the reserve grade 

side that beat Souths 14-8 to 

secure our first senior grade 

premiership in the BRL. 

He was instrumental in 

the formation of the Old 

Boys and was a long-term 

president and was patron at 

the time of his passing. 

It’s not only the Dolphins 

who have lost a good man 

but the Redcliffe community 

in general. 

As a long-time member 

and eventually chairman of 

the Redcliffe Central Lions 

Club, Neil was very active in 

the local community, 

spending countless hours 

making lives better for other 

people.

I WOULD like to welcome 

Redcliffe Smiles aboard as a 

new Clubhouse member. 

Dr Alf Le heads up the 

practice at Dolphins Central 

and is a passionate football 

fan. 

I have been a patient at 

Redcliffe Smiles and found 

all the staff to be very 

professional and provide great 

service. 

The Dolphins are looking 

forward to our association 

throughout this season.

IT’S difficult to believe that we’ve been 

reliving the 80s with our Voice Your Talent 

karaoke competition for two whole months 

already. 

With the passing of this time, we grow 

ever-closer to the ultimate dedication to this 

wonderfully colourful genre – finals! 

Our excited and skilled contestants have 

been revealing their talents during 

rehearsals, then entering our heats. 

Those who embodied the 80s the best 

during the heats are fortunate enough to 

progress on to our semi-finals – March 8 

and 15. 

Contestants who reach the semi-finals 

still have their work ahead of them, as only 

a handful are invited to progress on to the 

grand final, held on Tuesday, March 22 

from 6pm. 

Should you wish to show your support 

and come along to our finals during March, 

be prepared for your senses to be 

overwhelmed. After all, this competition is 

not just about the music. While all our 

contestants show great skills with vocally 

recreating the classics of the 80s, they must 

also embody them. Quite simply, the need to 

make us believe they are the real deal. 

So don’t close your eyes for one moment, 

as each contestant dresses the part, sings 

their heart out and struts the stage like their 

idol before them. Who knows, you could see 

the next George Michael, Madonna or 

Prince take the Dolphins stage. 

For those talented few who make us 

believe, they will be rewarded. Our top 

contestants walk away with cash prizes: 

third place receives $200 cash, second place 

receives $500 while first place walks away

Rob is a valuable member of our club who 

has grown with us for the past 25 years. He

Even within the confines of the Redcliffe 

Peninsula, the talents of our chefs will have 

something to tickle your tastebuds regardless 

of your background or culture. 

Our Dolphins HQ restaurant every Thursday 

night hosts and honours flavours from all over 

the world. During March and April, we are 

introducing something brand new to the restaurant 

with traditional Spanish cuisine. 

Should you be a little nervous to try these 

new flavours, the restaurant offers a selection 

of Spanish dishes within a buffet, allowing you 

to try as many of the dishes as you like. 

You may find that it is merely the names of 

the dishes that have you nervous, for these 

dishes use simple ingredients brought together 

in traditional Spanish ways. 

Paella valenciana may sound bizarre, but 

simply combines fluffy rice with chicken, 

chorizo and seafood. 

Arroz con leche could be mistaken for a rare 

exotic fruit, but turns out to be a Moorish rice 

pudding dish. Escalivada, while hard to pronounce, 

is a dish of Catalan roasted pepper, 

eggplant and onions. 

The cuisine on offer is enough to immerse 

yourself into the Spanish experience, but the 

Dolphins can do one better. 

At approximately 7pm each Thursday night, 

guests will enjoy a traditional performance by 

our very own Spanish señorita. 

This Spanish experience will surround the 

senses during March and April only. With limited 

seats available each Thursday night, we

HAVE you ever picked up a lifestyle magazine only to read that everything you 

eat and drink is wrong?

drinking enough water, protein should be 

complemented with carbohydrates, sugar is

Redcliffe Old Boys 

IT is with much sadness that I 

report the passing of our club 

patron and life member, Mr Neil 

O’Kamura. 

Neil was one of the original Old 

Boys and has been a valuable and 

well-respected colleague for a long 

period. 

His unique voice and outlook on 

life will be long remembered by 

everyone who had the pleasure to 

meet him. Please keep his family in 

your thoughts and prayers. 

Round 3 of the Intrust Super Cup 

has the Dolphins travelling to Kougari 

Oval on Sunday, March 20. 

The Old Boys will be taking a bus 

load of supporters on the day. Tickets 

will be on a first come, first served 

basis so get in early to reserve your 

seat. 

The July social is a bus to the 

Caloundra Cup race meeting on 

Saturday 2nd. This year it is our turn 

to travel to Wynnum for our annual 

lawn bowls day with the Wynnum Old 

Boys. The date is Sunday, October 16. 

Make sure you keep this day free as it 

is always a great day of banter, bowls 

and beverages. If anyone is interested

Danny Bridge fits that bill 

after arriving at Redcliffe in 

November, enduring a hellish 

pre-season and working as a 

groundsman at the club. 

“I thought I was dying,” the 

23-year-old backrower said. 

“It was a tough few weeks 

with the humidity as I couldn’t 

breathe. 

“But I’m acclimatised now 

because after three months 

I’m used to it. I would much 

rather play and train in the sun 

than be in the rain and mist.”

Bridge had played football as 

a professional since he was 18 

before making the decision to 

come to Australia. 

“I had an agent put my 

name about in Australia and 

Crusher Cleal came back to 

me in October and it went
