Dolphin Stadium takes shape
• REDCLIFFE Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy (left) shows
Moreton Bay Regional Shire Mayor Allan Sutherland
the progress with Dolphin Stadium.
STAGE One of our Dolphin
Stadium is under way and
builders Paynter Dixon have
already achieved milestones at
this early point in construction.
We have our fingers crossed that
the weather maintains its current
level and allows us to get the stadium
out of the ground.
If we have a significant downpour
during this critical time of
earthworks, we could end up with a
massive pile of mud as the hills are
very much exposed.
I invited Moreton Bay Regional
Mayor, Cr Allan Sutherland, to view
the progress and Allan was suitably
impressed.
I told Allan that once completed,
this stage would allow 4000 fans
seated comfortably and sitting right
on top of the action.
We envisage that the heavy
machinery will be off the turf of
Dolphin Oval in May, allowing a
returf and repair of the western side
of the playing field.
A solid working platform for
cranes etc was needed to be laid to
hold the heavy machinery.
This encroached about 10 metres
on the playing surface, which will
need tender loving care to allow our
football players to grace Dolphin
Oval once again.
During this period we have two
home games which will be allocated
to neighbouring clubs or to a close
country ground.
The QRL has certain standards
required to allow a QRL Intrust
Super Cup game to be held, which
eliminates many local grounds
nearby.
However, once these games are
allocated and approved by the QRL,
our fans will be informed.
Once the ground is repaired,
games can take place at Dolphin
Oval once more.
This will allow patrons to view
games on the Eastern Hill while
construction continues on the
Western Grand stand.
Services are available during this
time with amenities, canteen and a
temporary beer booth all included in
the current Eastern Hill facilities.
Shade is provided by the trees on the
top of the Eastern Hill.
Hopefully we will complete the
stand about late July or early August
and have a heap of back-ended home
games to finish the year with.
The first half of the season will be
difficult for our Dolphins, but if we
finish round one in good shape, it
will be a great sea breeze to carry us
home for the remainder of the 2016
season, and hopefully on to ultimate
glory at the revamped Dolphin
Stadium.
PROVIDING EXCELLENT SERVICES IN...
Weekends are for winning
AUSSIES are notorious for
living for the weekend. We
work hard and we play hard.
Our efforts to do the very best that
we can during the week can lead us
to be rundown and exhausted by the
time the weekend comes around. But
that doesn’t stop us from planning
our weekends to the fullest.
So when the Friday rolls around,
we are all but jumping out of our
seats with excitement with what the
weekend will bring.
This month, we wanted to share in
this excitement with our members,
and what better way than to give
away $2000 cash every Friday night.
Now that’s a great start to the
weekend!
We want to share in the excitement
Hopping green with egg-citement
WHETHER you share your
experiences with thousands of
people in the main streets of
Brisbane, or celebrate quietly
within the comfort of your own
home, March has two events to
circle in red on your calendar.
St Patrick’s Day is universally
celebrated by all – regardless of
your heritage or devotion.
While the Dolphins cannot
spout strong links to this festive
day, we certainly encourage our
members who do like to come
down to the club and celebrate
with friends and family alike.
To help the celebrations, our
Bunny’s Family Restaurant will
be putting on a special meal in
honour of this colourful day.
with as many members as we can, so
to enter is as simple as spending $5
at any of our restaurants, café, bars
or bottleshop, or turning over $5 on
any electronic gaming machine.
Whichever way you chose to
spend your money here at the club,
be sure to hand over your card to our
friendly staff when you make a
purchase, or have your membership
card interested into the gaming
machines while you’re playing.
Your tickets accumulate
automatically and are stored in our
virtual barrel. They begin accruing
from 10am on Friday morning and
continue right through until the last
draw at 10pm that same night. After
the last winner is found, the barrel is
emptied for the next week’s draw –
But with St Patrick’s Day only
being celebrated one day of the
year, the same goes for the offering
in Bunny’s – if you miss the day,
you’ll miss the great special we
have on offer.
While you may not see a great
deal of publicity on the St Patrick’s
Day festivities in your local area,
no one can deny the ever-growing
to start the fun all over again.
Every winner drawn from the
barrel must be present to claim their
prize. If they are here, they instantly
win $250 cash – it’s that easy!
Winners will be drawn every 30
minutes, with the first draw taking
place at 6.30pm, and the last draw at
10 o’clock that same night.
Should you be lucky enough to
walk away with $250 cash in the
first draw, be sure to stick around as
members can win multiple times.
With eight chances to win instant
cash every Friday during March
(excluding Good Friday, as the club
is closed), why wouldn’t you kick
off the weekend with friends at the
Leaguesy.
presence of Easter everywhere
you look.
Chocolates and stuffed bunnies
adorn shops everywhere and
camping sites are already overbooked.
So this year we’re keeping
things simple for our members
and allowing them to relax and
unwind the busy period at the
club.
You may still find yourself
spotting chocolate eggs and bunny
ears throughout the club, but we
assure you that it’s all in good fun.
Although the club will not be
open on Good Friday, we are open
9am-3am every other day, so we
welcome you to share these special
days with us here at the Dolphins.
Stadium construction steams ahead
WORK on the Dolphin
Stadium has jumped
into top gear over the
past month.
Members and visitors
would have noticed that
excavation work has been full
on and that machinery has
chewed into the hill and piers
have been sunk.
We have been fortunate
that the weather by and large
has been favourable and no
major problems have been
reported.
I’m sure we will run into a
hitch somewhere down the
track, but for now it’s all
systems go for our new-look
stadium.
★ ★ ★ ★
I TRAVELLED to
Mudgeeraba on the Gold
Coast last month to watch
the Dolphins’ first trial of
the 2016 season.
Despite the wet conditions
in the second half, I came
away impressed with coach
Adam Mogg and his team’s
outing against the Burleigh
Bears.
Adam gave a run to quite
a few newcomers as well as
members of the 2014 Colts
premiership side in Josh
Beehag, Tyson Cleal,
Rinsma Saueha, Tyson
Gamble and Hayden
Hansen.
English import Danny
Bridge and John Fox,
returning from injury, also
were strong in our victory
while big prop Charlie
Faingaa was tremendous in
the tough stuff.
With a drier track
expected at Bishop Park in
our second trial, I am
expecting big things with
Luke Capewell back at the
helm with Tyson Andrews
also on display.
Usual centre Tom Opacic
is missing at the moment as
he and Aaron Whitchurch
have been training with the
Broncos in the off-season.
For the second successive
year, Tom has scored a trip
to the World Club Series in
England after making the
most of his opportunities
across the ditch in the
Auckland Nines while
Aaron scored two tries
against the Cowboys in the
mud at Bundaberg.
Barring injuries to the
Broncos star backs, we are
expecting Tom and Aaron
back in the red and white
for the start of the Intrust
Super Cup.
★ ★ ★ ★
WITH local government
elections on March 19, now is
a fitting time to pay tribute to
Moreton Bay Regional Shire
Mayor Allan Sutherland and
Cr Jim Houghton.
Our club is grateful to these
two representatives for their
enormous support over the
years as we have taken the
Dolphins forward with the
development of the Dolphins
Health Precinct, Dolphins
Central and now Dolphin
Stadium.
The Dolphins appreciate
what they have done over the
years and, regardless of the
poll result, acknowledge their
hard work and dedication to
what can be a thankless task.
I believe Redcliffe and the
shire in general have fared
well under Allan’s two terms
of leadership with the local
economy holding its own and
looking to a strong future with
the delivery of the Moreton
Bay rail link.
Jim was a member of our
inaugural first grade
premiership side and has kept
his ties with the local
community. He has worked
closely with us on several
projects and his guidance is
invaluable.
Cr Koliana Winchester of
Division 6 is also a Leagues
Club member who has shown
considerable interest in
pushing sporting interests on
the Peninsula.
We’ve enjoyed Koliana’s
involvement with the football
club during her term including
her assistance to launch a
local Zonta project at our
Capras home game last year.
★ ★ ★ ★
OUR club suffered a sad
loss last month with the
passing of Neil “Gravel”
O’kamura.
A former Dolphins player
and official, Neil was a
popular and well-respected
member of our club for
more than 60 years.
During that time he
served the club in many
roles, including as a player,
coach, team manager,
doubles seller and
committeeman.
He was one of those men
you could rely on whenever
volunteers were needed. It
didn’t matter what the
occasion whether a working
bee or junior barbecue, he
would be there to help out.
As a player, Neil won
premierships for the
“Shellgrit” in the 1955 and
1956 Murrumba reserve
grade competitions.
In 1958, he was a member
of the club’s BRL reserve
grade side, our first senior
side to play in the Brisbane
Rugby League competition.
The following year he was
part of the reserve grade
side that beat Souths 14-8 to
secure our first senior grade
premiership in the BRL.
He was instrumental in
the formation of the Old
Boys and was a long-term
president and was patron at
the time of his passing.
It’s not only the Dolphins
who have lost a good man
but the Redcliffe community
in general.
As a long-time member
and eventually chairman of
the Redcliffe Central Lions
Club, Neil was very active in
the local community,
spending countless hours
making lives better for other
people.
★ ★ ★ ★
I WOULD like to welcome
Redcliffe Smiles aboard as a
new Clubhouse member.
Dr Alf Le heads up the
practice at Dolphins Central
and is a passionate football
fan.
I have been a patient at
Redcliffe Smiles and found
all the staff to be very
professional and provide great
service.
The Dolphins are looking
forward to our association
throughout this season.
- TICKETS $25 Please mention the Dolphins News when responding to the advertisements

80s come
back to
life
IT’S difficult to believe that we’ve been
reliving the 80s with our Voice Your Talent
karaoke competition for two whole months
already.
With the passing of this time, we grow
ever-closer to the ultimate dedication to this
wonderfully colourful genre – finals!
Our excited and skilled contestants have
been revealing their talents during
rehearsals, then entering our heats.
Those who embodied the 80s the best
during the heats are fortunate enough to
progress on to our semi-finals – March 8
and 15.
Contestants who reach the semi-finals
still have their work ahead of them, as only
a handful are invited to progress on to the
grand final, held on Tuesday, March 22
from 6pm.
Should you wish to show your support
and come along to our finals during March,
be prepared for your senses to be
overwhelmed. After all, this competition is
not just about the music. While all our
contestants show great skills with vocally
recreating the classics of the 80s, they must
also embody them. Quite simply, the need to
make us believe they are the real deal.
So don’t close your eyes for one moment,
as each contestant dresses the part, sings
their heart out and struts the stage like their
idol before them. Who knows, you could see
the next George Michael, Madonna or
Prince take the Dolphins stage.
For those talented few who make us
believe, they will be rewarded. Our top
contestants walk away with cash prizes:
third place receives $200 cash, second place
receives $500 while first place walks away
with $1000 cash instantly.
Not a bad way to express your inner 80’s
diva. See you at the finals!
NRL tipping
competition
will pay off
NOTHING compares with the thrill of
watching an NRL game live at your
local stadium.
Making the game that more exciting, the
Dolphins will once again be delivering our
very own NRL Dolphins Footy Tipping competition
to all our members.
Due to the popularity of the 2015 competition,
this year will deliver some great prizes to
those Dolphins who truly understand the sport
of NRL – and will prove it to their friends and
family by securing their predicted winning
teams before each game.
Whether you are a seasoned professional or
a first-time user, Dolphins Footy Tipping
makes it easy for you to take on your mates to
see who has what it takes to come out on top.
Not only will winners of the competition
have bragging rights for all of 2016, but they’ll
also walk away with some great prizes.
But in true competition fashion, there can
be only one winner.
When all the points are tallied and the winner
is announced, this NRL predictive genius
will land a $500 NRL grand final day Dolphins
package.
This experience provides the winner and
their closest mates with the excitement and
adrenaline of the NRL grand final under the
big screen at the Dolphins with drinks and
food included – capturing the essence of a true
game-day experience, outside of the stadium.
With entry into the competition absolutely
free of charge, there really is no reason why
you don’t register yourself, your mates and
your family to see who can take out the crown
of Dolphins Footy Tipping champion.
With the first game pegged for March 3, ask
staff today how to register online or through
our Dolphins app and get your tips in.
Remember, unless your 2016 strategy is to
bet on all the away teams, be sure to get your
tips in on time.
Rob turns 90
ON behalf of the Dolphins Leagues Club,
we would like to give a very special shout
out to one of our dearest members who is
turning 90 this month.
Rob is a valuable member of our club who
has grown with us for the past 25 years. He
plans on celebrating this occasion by sharing
his special day with his friends and family
here at the club.
Not only is Rob sharing his special
birthday with our club, he is also sharing his
day with his beloved wife Coral, who is also
sharing her 88th birthday in the same month.
Happily married for 67 years, we hope
that your time continues to be an enjoyable
one and hope you have many happy
birthdays for years to come. Happy birthday
Rob. We’re honoured to be sharing your day
here with you at our club.
Jam-packed with flavours
WHILE our bars are jampacked with drink
favourites, we like to offer something new
and different to our members and guests
every now and then.
Our Twenty|20 current drinks offering is
a regular favourite, but we wanted to give a
little bit more variety to the weekend.
Due to its popularity, our Twenty|20
offering will remain on Friday nights from
6pm, while we introduce a new range of
cocktails to our Saturday nights – Jam Jar
Cocktails to be precise.
These delightfully summery cocktails
offer a variety of flavours to choose from, all
served in a traditional looking jam jar that
embodies the relaxed Aussie lifestyle.
The next time you venture into the club
on a Saturday between 6pm and midnight,
see our friendly staff and discuss the best
Jam Jar Cocktail for you.
only Dolly James.
Dolly is a strong, independent woman who
grew up in the Philippines and enjoys sharing
the foods and tastes of her culture with others.
Dolly has chosen to mix many traditional
elements together into one dish, with chicken
and pork adobo with mango salsa. Not only is
this dish a popular luau offering and a national
dish of the Philippines, it also happens to be a
trademark of the Philippine cuisine.
Just looking at this magnificent dish will
leave you breathless as it captivates the taste
buds and immerses you in a foreign culture.
The meal is made up of laminated pork and
chicken, served with a vibrant mango salsa and
white rice.
To really bring the Philippines to your plate,
this particular meal is served on a banana leaf
– one of the traditional methods of serving It is this connection with family that makes
Philippine cuisine.
all the dishes that Dolly prepares special.
When all these elements are brought together
on one dish, it will leave you mesmerised by feels that Australia is now her home and wish-
Living in Australia for 30 years now, Dolly
its visual appeal and mouth-watering flavour es to share this connection with tradition, food
combinations. With every dish that our chefs and family with all those around her.
choose to share with our members, there is This delicious meal is available for lunch
always a story that adds depth and substance to and dinner throughout March only, so don’t
the simple flavours.
miss your chance.
Dolly chose this dish because it reminded While it will cost you $19.90 for members
her of the time she was out enjoying a lovely and $21.90 for non-members, the meaning,
day with a family picnic under a mango tree culture and tradition behind the meal is priceless.
back in Philippines.
Dolly said that whenever she was longing This is a unique and rare opportunity for our
for a Filipino food fix, she would cook up this members and their guests to share in the tradition
and family connection that Dolly brings to
traditional dish of chicken and pork adobo,
preparing and sharing it with her whole family. the Dolphins.
Spain comes alive
ESTE mes de marzo, Delfines introduce
delicias españolas.
This March, Dolphins introduces delicias
españolas (Spanish delicacies).
With such a diverse population, the cuisine
in Australia certainly knows no bounds.
Even within the confines of the Redcliffe
Peninsula, the talents of our chefs will have
something to tickle your tastebuds regardless
of your background or culture.
Our Dolphins HQ restaurant every Thursday
night hosts and honours flavours from all over
the world. During March and April, we are
introducing something brand new to the restaurant
with traditional Spanish cuisine.
Should you be a little nervous to try these
new flavours, the restaurant offers a selection
of Spanish dishes within a buffet, allowing you
to try as many of the dishes as you like.
You may find that it is merely the names of
the dishes that have you nervous, for these
dishes use simple ingredients brought together
in traditional Spanish ways.
Paella valenciana may sound bizarre, but
simply combines fluffy rice with chicken,
chorizo and seafood.
Arroz con leche could be mistaken for a rare
exotic fruit, but turns out to be a Moorish rice
pudding dish. Escalivada, while hard to pronounce,
is a dish of Catalan roasted pepper,
eggplant and onions.
The cuisine on offer is enough to immerse
yourself into the Spanish experience, but the
Dolphins can do one better.
At approximately 7pm each Thursday night,
guests will enjoy a traditional performance by
our very own Spanish señorita.
This Spanish experience will surround the
senses during March and April only. With limited
seats available each Thursday night, we
encourage you to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Doors open at 6pm.
Members can experience this entire Spanish
occasion for only $24.90, with non-members
costing $29.90 each.
Perfect diet
hard to find
HAVE you ever picked up a lifestyle magazine only to read that everything you
eat and drink is wrong?
You soon find out that you haven’t been
drinking enough water, protein should be
complemented with carbohydrates, sugar is
poison, only naughty people eat bread and then
there is coffee.
Everyday something new regarding diet and
nutrition is published and it confuses us all just
that little bit more. Don’t even get started on
fads and superfoods.
It is easy to be tricked into eating things that
are labelled healthy when in fact they may be
doing more harm than good.
There is no right way to a perfect diet but
here are a few things that may assist you in
making better choices.
• Make it easy for you. If you don’t buy it,
you will only say no once. If you buy it you
keep saying no.
• Multicolour palette. Let colours guide your
selection when shopping in the fresh fruit
and vegetable section of the market.
Different colours offer different nutrients
and plant chemicals that are necessary for
normal body function.
• Eat with the season. This is nature’s way of
making healthy bodies. Eat fruit and
vegetables that are in season to maximise
nutrient intake. Besides they usually taste a
whole lot better as well.
• Dust off the recipe book. Try new recipes or
styles of cooking. This often opens the door
to healthy variety and the introduction of
nutritional foods that you have been missing
in your diet.
The key to nutrition and a balanced diet is
about knowing what to eat, when to eat it and
what is inside it.
There is one thing that has been proven to
work and that is the combination of a balanced
diet and regular exercise.
We are excited to say that at the Dolphins
Health Precinct we now have professionals in
both departments.
You can now have the support of not only
our personal trainers but also a qualified
nutritionist.
No single nutritional plan will suit everyone.
Things like our body type, hormones, medical
conditions and other factors will determine
what type of nutritional plan you will need.
By seeing our resident nutritionist you will
soon be on your way to eating well and feeling
a whole lot better.
So in March we have an extremely healthy
membership offer for new members. If you
join this month, you will receive a free
consultation with our Dolphins Health Precinct
nutritionist.
This is the first of its kind at Dolphins and it
will provide all new members with a strong
platform to achieve their health and fitness
goals.
In addition to this we have a free personal
trainer assessment to get you started, a free
class in our beautiful Mind & Body Studio and
five years free Redcliffe Leagues Club
membership if you are not already a member.
We still have an amazing three-month
membership offer for $170. Remember this is
not just a gym membership, it is a health
precinct hosting an aquatic centre, 33 degree
hydrotherapy pool and gym.
Adult learn to swim classes are back for
those who would like to learn the basics of
swimming and water safety. They run for fourweek
blocks and are as little as $15 per lesson.
Bookings are essential.
English
signing
heats up
IMAGINE one week you
are in frosty England,
the next week suffering
the humidity of a full
Queensland summer.
New Dolphins signing
Danny Bridge fits that bill
after arriving at Redcliffe in
November, enduring a hellish
pre-season and working as a
groundsman at the club.
“I thought I was dying,” the
23-year-old backrower said.
“It was a tough few weeks
with the humidity as I couldn’t
breathe.
“But I’m acclimatised now
because after three months
I’m used to it. I would much
rather play and train in the sun
than be in the rain and mist.”
An England under 15 and
under 18 representative,
Bridge had played football as
a professional since he was 18
before making the decision to
come to Australia.
“I had an agent put my
name about in Australia and
Crusher Cleal came back to
me in October and it went
from there,” he said.
“I wanted to see what the
footy was like out here and
test myself in it as well as
travel.
“I was fortunate my missus
Heather felt the same about
travelling and working here
so it was a win for both of us.
“This is the first time I have
had to work as well as train
and the first few weeks were
• DANNY Bridge dons the Ireland
jersey in the World Cup.
• DOLPHIN Danny
Bridge takes it up
against Burleigh.
tough and I was asking
myself, ‘what have I done?.
But the training is so intense
that it’s just like fulltime
professionals rather than
part-time.
“The boys have been all
good even though I’m the
only Englishman here at the
moment as Bobby Goulding
is working on his visa.”
At 98 kilograms and
robust in defence, Bridge has
quickly found his feet with
the Dolphins, making the
opening trial squad against
Burleigh Bears on the Gold
Coast.
“I enjoyed the trial even
though the weather was a bit
like being at home,” he said.
“I thought our defence
was good and the match was
played at a high intensity. I
will be interested to see how
things go on a dry track.
“I played in the secondrow
but anywhere in the
middle of the park is fine
with me.”
Bridge stood out enough
to warrant selection against
Norths at Bishop Park on
February 13 when coach
Adam Mogg brought in
established stars Luke
Capewell, Shane Pumipi and
Tyson Andrews.
Bridge’s English credentials
are strong with a
grounding at Wigan followed
by stints at Warrington,
Bradford (loan) and back to
Warrington as well as
appearances for Ireland in
the 2013 World Cup.
His older brother Chris
turned out for more than 200
matches for Warrington and
now is in the centres for
