one can deny the beauty and 

sense of community the 

Redcliffe Peninsula holds. 

It is this spirit that has driven the 

community forward, building the 

stepping stones for major 

infrastructure developments to 

ensure the Redcliffe Peninsula and 

Moreton Bay Region continues to 

grow and flourish in the future. 

Key projects that drive this 

momentum include the nearly 

completed Redcliffe train line, the 

commitment of a university precinct 

in the Pine Rivers Shire and the 

Dolphins’ very own 10,000-capacity 

stadium. 

Each project would create an 

incredible boost to the region’s 

economy, but together they can 

boost Redcliffe into a new era of 

prosperity and opportunity. 

An example could be found with 

the Redcliffe youth. Currently, youth 

unemployment on the Peninsula is 

high, demanding a response with 

unskilled jobs in the local area. 

Then once these youths have 

finished school, they must venture 

out again for tertiary education – 

many travelling into the city and 

beyond to fulfil their schooling 

dreams. 

The Dolphins Stadium will bring 

unskilled jobs to the Peninsula, the 

university bringing tertiary education 

to the region, plus a public transport 

connection enabling our youth to 

stay, grow and contribute to our local 

economy for many more years to 

come. 

Redcliffe will benefit a great deal 

from the Dolphin Stadium directly – 

not just from the venture itself, but 

from the flow-on effect such a 

significant tourist attraction 

provides. 

Initial projections show 

approximately 192 unskilled jobs 

will be created throughout Redcliffe 

as a direct result of the stadium. 

Then there’s the economic 

contribution of participants and 

travelled spectators. Research 

conducted by Sports Marketing 

Australia show those attending 

stadium events would inject $234 

per day. This can be found through 

services such as accommodation, 

meals, beverages, groceries, 

purchases from retail shops, 

entertainment, tourism and so on. 

Some residents may be forgiven for 

thinking that the Dolphin Stadium 

will only be used for NRL code 

events. 

While the Dolphins are extremely 

excited to have our footy teams 

playing on a ground that would rival 

many stadiums, other sporting codes 

that play on a rectangular field would 

also benefit from the ground’s 

transformation. 

Soccer and rugby union could 

frequent the grounds, not only 

holding finals but all sorts of 

carnivals year-round. In addition, the 

stadium’s facilities open up many 

other uses such as concerts, festivals, 

major events and more. The sky’s 

the limit! 

Each of the three major projects 

in our region may have begun with 

just one passionate voice, but those 

on the Peninsula know that one voice 

quickly multiplies, becoming a true 

force to be reckoned with. 

Notably, the voices that have 

spoken loudest (and longest) during 

this time have included federal 

Member Luke Howarth, Mayor 

Allan Sutherland, Councillors James 

Houghton and Koliana Winchester 

and, of course, our very own 

President Bob Jones and CEO Tony 

Murphy. 

The project has been split into 

stages to accommodate funding 

support and the yearly football 

season. Stage one and parts of stage 

two are planned for completion by 

the middle of 2016 with the balance 

of stage two completed in 2017 and 

stage three in 2018. 

It truly is an exciting time to be a 

part of the future growth of the 

Redcliffe Peninsula.

Tuesdays or Fridays. This is because on those days we

Dolphin Stadium starts to take shape 

THE heavy machinery 

has moved into 

Dolphin Oval and work 

has well and truly started 

on the new stadium. 

Although preliminary work 

was done before Christmas, 

the post-New Year has 

signalled the excavation 

process with long-term club 

contractor Paynter Dixon 

overseeing the work. 

Paynter Dixon performs 

the tendering out process and 

we have the utmost confidence 

they will hand over a 

magnificent product to us 

when they are finished. 

We have penciled in the 

round 11 of the Intrust Super 

Cup on the weekend of May 

21-22 as probably our first 

home match of the season. 

That leaves the round 6 and 

8 home fixtures against 

Ipswich and Easts up in the 

air, with the strong possibility 

of one of our affiliate clubs 

hosting one of these fixtures. 

We also are in negotiations 

with Easts to possibly swap 

the match to their home 

ground and we host the Tigers 

later in the season. 

The construction work still 

allows us to train on Dolphin 

Oval, although the western 

side will be out of bounds for 

a while.

THE rugby league preseason 

is coming to a close 

with the Village Motors 

Dolphins preparing to play 

a number of trials this 

month. 

It will be exciting to see 

new and old faces in battle 

situations under new coach 

Adam Mogg. 

There are quite a few 

likely lads in our ranks with 

Dan Randall, who has tasted 

Queensland Cup at the 

Capras, training the house 

down, along with Manly’s 

Tyson Andrews and Sam 

Anderson. 

Of our locals, Tyson Cleal 

and Josh Beehag appear to 

have benefitted from the 

past couple of years in the 

seniors and will be keen to 

maintain their positions. 

I have received great 

feedback on our new coach, 

who is living up to 

expectations for the 

attributes we knew he had. 

I am delighted at what I 

am hearing and seeing at 

training as we enter what 

inevitably will be another 

tough season against NRLaligned 

clubs and the cream 

of the state’s talent. 

The new era starts with a 

trial against the Burleigh 

Bears at Mudgeeraba’s 

Firth Park on February 6. 

After a long, gruelling 

pre-season, I know the 

players are looking forward 

to hitting the field. 

It is then on to Bishop 

Park for all three grades on 

February 13 to meet Norths 

and against Easts at 

Langlands Park on 

February 20.

OUR licensed club has 

enjoyed a great trading month 

over the Christmas period. 

December was one of our 

busiest months on records 

with trading at record levels. 

Our food department is 

going great guns while the 

changes to the gaming area 

and card system have paid 

dividends. 

It was great to see so many 

members and friends come 

out over the festive season to 

support their club.

THE Dolphins have lost 

one of their 1965 

premiership squad 

members. John Brockie was 

a passionate Redcliffe 

player, supporter and 

resident for all his life. 

Although John did not 

play in the club’s first A 

grade premiership, he was 

an outstanding club player 

who also coached third 

grade after his retirement 

and then looked after some 

of the most outstanding 

junior sides in the club’s 

history. 

A gifted sportsman, John 

was an A grade tennis player 

in his younger days and a 

handy cricketer as well as 

an excellent golfer. 

He was strongly involved 

in the establishment of the 

Dolphins Social Golf Club 

as well as helping the careers 

of many Redcliffe junior 

golfers. 

I remember playing touch 

with John in the 1970s, and 

although slow, it was 

amazing the number of 

times he found himself in 

open space. 

He will be sadly missed 

around the club.

ANOTHER member we 

lost was David Ridgway, a 

long-time supporter and 

familiar face around the club. 

I’m sure Dave was on the 

committee in the early days 

and also was instrumental in 

setting up the successful five 

hundred and euchre clubs at 

the Dolphins. 

A keen golfer, Dave had a 

long-running association with 

the Redcliffe Golf Club.

Once again, we are hosting our beautiful 

Valentines Seafood Buffet. What better way 

to treat your loved one than by spoiling

oceans’ finest delicacies. Even for those who 

aren’t seafood lovers, there are still plenty 

to choose from. There will be a selection of 

roasts and salads to accompany the fresh 

seafood.

Anthony hops on 

to flavour wagon 

FROM our past chef’s specials, it’s clear to see that our chefs have an overwhelming 

amount of talent, skill and experience. 

Each chef has had something 

unique to contribute, 

whether that be their travel 

experience, the traditional 

cooking techniques of their 

heritage or even the experience 

gained from years of 

familiarity in the kitchen. 

There has been no shortage 

of interesting stories and 

experience to come from the 

Chef’s Specials. 

This month, we are focusing 

on a chef who has yet 

another different take on traditional 

cooking to share with 

us. 

Anthony Malcolm is the 

chef in the spotlight this 

month, although he has a different 

perspective than the 

other chefs we’ve covered. 

Anthony is an apprentice 

chef, which means he is still 

learning all the ropes of the 

kitchen. Nearing the end of 

his apprenticeship, Anthony is 

no less talented than the rest 

of our team. 

Anthony was determined to 

learn as much as possible 

throughout his apprenticeship, 

and for this reason, he 

has chosen a dish that he has 

never before attempted to present 

as his special for 

February. 

This dish is a kangaroo 

steak on a bed of sweet potato 

mash. This unusual protein 

was one that Anthony has 

never before attempted and 

this was the reason he chose 

it. 

He wanted to pick something 

a little bit different and 

unusual to share with all the 

customers. 

Anthony’s special is available 

at lunch and dinner from 


all throughout February. 

It is just $19.90 for members 

and $21.90 for non-members 

and includes an all you 

can eat salad and vegetable 

buffet.

Pacific Rim buffet

ALOHA from Dolphins HQ! Last month 

saw the immense success of our Pacific Rim 

buffet, held every Thursday night in 

Dolphins HQ. 

In fact, it was so well loved that we are 

continuing the cultural adventure 

all throughout February as 

well. 

Hop aboard the tropical 

Dolphins cruise for several hours 

while you sample some of the finest 

delicacies that the Pacific 

region have to offer, without ever 

having to leave the comfort of the 

Club. 

Lose yourself in the magic of a 

tropical themed room and imagine 

yourself aboard a cruise ship 

fit for the most fun-loving travellers. 

Dine among colourful flowers, tropical 

birds, colourful Easter Island heads and an 

abundance of green foliage. 

Be the captain of your own ship and 

choose your course based on which country’s 

food you’d like to taste first. 

A possible travel course could involve 

starting with a selection of hot and cold 

dishes that most appeal to you. 

Choose from hot dishes such as roasted 

Kumara, baked taro, palusami – which is 

taro leaves in coconut cream, Japanese 

chicken curry, pork afritada, Fijian ginger 

fish or pansit bihon, which are Filipino fried 

noodles. 

You could even use some tasty coconut 

rice to absorb all the flavours, and a panipopo, 

which is a Samoan coconut bun, to 

mop up all the leftovers. 

Any of these can be paired perfectly with 

the selection of salads on offer. 

Try our Kokoda, which is a traditional 

fish salad, the pawpaw and zucchini 

salad or the Hawaiian 

potato salad. 

For those who like something 

sweet, there is an outstanding 

range of traditional desserts 

available to finish off the meal. 

Try the Hawaiian mango slice, 

the apple sweet bread pudding 

with vanilla sauce or the 

Hawaiian dessert squares. 

If the food wasn’t enough to 

tempt you, we have something 

even more exciting on the night. 

Be entertained by our very own 

hula dancer in a short private show from 

7pm on the night. 

With your little tropical getaway ready 

and waiting for you, all you need to do now

Night will 

benefit our 

needy youth 

ALTHOUGH 2015 seems to be fading 

fast, it was a year that held a lot of 

firsts for us. One of those was that it 

was the first time that we held an event 

called Rockin’ 4 the Homeless. 

This event saw our club transform into a 

venue of non-stop singing, dancing and fun. 

Across three stages were numerous performers, 

all playing their hearts out to raise money for 

the homeless youth who live in our local area. 

The night was so much fun that it was easy 

to forget the importance of it. All the proceeds 

of the event went into helping build better lives 

for the homeless and disadvantaged youth, that 

sadly grow in number every year in our local 

areas. 

We were so thrilled with the success of the 

night towards helping those in need, that we 

are very excited to once again be involved with 

such a good cause. 

That’s right, Rockin’ 4 the Homeless is 

coming to the Redcliffe Leagues Club once 

more. 

The event will take place on Saturday, 

March 12. This year things will run a little bit 

differently. Not only will we see some fresh 

faces in the lineup, the actual event itself will 

be held entirely upstairs. 

All the bands involved in the event will be 

playing on one of two upstairs stages. However, 

as always, there will still be free entertainment 

on the downstairs stage for that night. 

The most exciting part is that there will be 

two major headline acts to really complete the 

night. The Radiators will steal the show, as will 

Dave Evans, an ex-member of the popular 

Australian rock band AC/DC. 

This will be a paid event, with all money 

raised going towards improving the lives of 

homeless and disadvantaged youth. 

To gain access to the upstairs area, and 

consequently the main events, tickets will cost 

just $25. 

These tickets are only available online at the 

Rockin’ for the Homeless website from 

February 1 and will not be sold through the 

club. 

Entertainment will start at 3pm and will 

continue long into the night. We make no 

guarantees that you will leave with a voice, as 

you might lose it while singing along with the 

talented artists. 

Merchandise and raffles will be available for 

purchase on the night, and if you wish to make 

a donation to show your support, you will be 

able to do this on the night also. 

So make sure you keep that day free, because 

this will be an event you don’t want to miss.

Little to argue at 

Last month, thanks to our Celebrating Craft Beer segment, we were introduced 

Best of outdoors 

to the distinctive flavours of the Stone & Wood craft beer range. 

With four different brews to try, we hope 

you were able to find one that you liked best. 

This month we’re revisiting one of our 

favourite ranges of craft beer – Little Creatures. 

We know the history of Little Creatures. It’s 

a local Australian brew, originating in 

Fremantle, Western Australia and has since 

spread to all edges of the country. It is becoming 

a popular name among many of the local 

brews. 

The four flavours up for trial throughout 

February will be the Pale Ale, Bright Ale, 

Pilsner and Rogers Beer. 

While all four have distinctly different flavours 

made up of a varying combination malt 

and fruity notes, there is one ingredient that 

makes these craft beers stand out among the 

rest. 

All of the Little Creatures range, including 

the ones that didn’t make it on to our trial list, 

have a distinct hops taste that is unmatched by 

any other beer. It is what makes Little Creatures 

so unique. 

The four options we have selected to trial at

will pay dividends 

FEBRUARY is about to kick off and some of you are on track with your health 

and fitness goals, some with great intentions are starting to slow up a bit and 

there are those who never took off in the first place. We all fall into one of those 

categories. 

As we start getting children ready for school 

and work is now intruding on our personal 

time, our health and fitness schedule changes 

or disappears altogether. 

There is a term for this and it is commonly 

referred to as life. The difference however is 

that this year you can be ready for it. 

So make a plan for yourself. All you need is 

30 minutes a day, which can be made up any 

way you see fit. It can be two 15-minute 

workouts at home in your lounge room doing 

one session in the morning and one at night. 

You may decide to go for a 30-minute walk 

or jog every day or another suggestion is three 

one-hour sessions at the gym. 

The bonus of walking into a gym like the 

Dolphins Health Precinct is that it is a space 

that promotes health, invigorates bodies and 

motivates the mind. 

You can switch off and focus on yourself. If 

you are healthy, your mind is healthy and 

happy and you will carry this with you for the 

day. 

Another point of focus for this stage of the 

year is to remember to keep it fresh. It takes a 

very rare person to repeat the same exercise 

routine every day. 

The thought of waking to a 5am alarm so 

that you can perform the same exercises every 

day ends up feeling similar to the anticipation 

of having your teeth pulled. 

So make a plan to mix up your training each 

week so that each day is fresh and don’t forget 

to rotate your schedule. 

Work around fixed classes with a varying 

weights program, try a different class on a 

different day, join in with one of the popular 

non-impact aqua aerobics classes or finish off 

doing laps in the aquatic centre. 

This is just a reminder that as a full member 

of the Dolphins Health Precinct you have 

access to cardio machines, weights, Pilates, 

spin bikes, yoga, dance and core classes, aqua 

aerobic classes, lap pool and much more. 

The Dolphins Health Precinct has a plan to 

keep you on track this year so in February we 

have something for everyone. 

We are hosting a group fitness launch day on 

Saturday, February 20 and it is a day not to be 

missed. 

Once again we will be hosting Rapid 

Bioscan, which is a body composition analysis 

facility. At only $20 per person, it is a great 

tool to establish a starting point for future 

health goals or a chance for those who have 

already used Rapid Bioscan to compare their 

results. 

Group fitness launch day will also see the 

unveiling of new classes so come along and be 

the first to try them out. 

Bring the family and enjoy a barbecue to the 

music from a jukebox while your kids can have 

their face painted and watch a balloonist twist 

their art. 

The highly anticipated Body Overhaul 

Challenge is now open for registrations.

OUR 2015 year ended on a very sad note 

with the sudden death of one of our most 

loved ladies, Margie Larkin, whose humour 

and personality as well as her love for the 

game, was very special to us all. 

Unfortunately the death of Dave Ridgway 

followed a very short time later. Dave was 

very well known and respected throughout 

the Peninsula in general and to the euchre 

and 500 players especially, 

Dave’s consistent support to us and other 

clubs is immeasurable. 

These two people will be sorely missed 

but remembered always with fondness and 

appreciation.

THE Redcliffe Dolphins have announced that 

the North Lakes Kangaroos re-signed for 

another three years as an affiliate partner. 

It is exciting times for North Lakes 

Kangaroos, who for the first time in their short 

history will soon have a field in the North 

Lakes area to call their own. 

Since the Kangaroos launched their club in 

2012, they have used fields at neighbouring 

clubs Deception Bay Raiders and the 

Dolphins. 

After working with North Lakes developers 

in that same period, the Kangaroos, along 

with Moreton Bay Regional Council, are 

pleased about the sporting fields’ progress. 

People travelling along Anzac Avenue will 

be able to see the progress of the multi-sport 

facility behind the Mango Hill Anzac 

Memorial. 

Kangaroos president Laura van Bruggen 

said: “We expect to see enormous growth in 

our numbers in the next two seasons, which is 

great for both our club and our game. 

“Our Kangaroos committee and players 

have been looking forward to the project 

being finished for a long time.” 

Dolphins development manager Steve 

Crawford said the affiliation would be a 

winner for both clubs in the long term. 

“We will do whatever we can to help the 

Kangaroos grow and further establish 

themselves, whether it is coach education or 

development work with the kids,” he said.
