producer and actor goes by his more 

aptly stage name, he is none other 

than rock legend, Meat Loaf. 

Paying homage to one of the 

world’s most famous and polarising 

rock stars of a generation, the 

Redcliffe Leagues Club presents a 

tribute experience like no other.

back to the seventies and eighties 

with their raw rock reproduction of 

all the classic hits from the Bat out 

of Hell album right through to Bat

Fronted by award-winning lead 

vocalist Paul Brown, whose searing 

vocals reproduces Meat Loaf in his 

heyday, every note to perfection, his 

resemblance to Meat Loaf is 

uncanny. 

Joining Paul on stage is one of 

Brisbane’s true female rock 

vocalists, Tara Graham. 

This five-piece band is absolutely 

dynamite with so much energy they 

can’t possibly fit it all into just the 

one show, presenting the Great 

American Rock Show.

Dolphins move up the ladder 

AT the time of writing 

this column, the 

Dolphins are sitting in 

the top five of the Intrust 

Super Cup. 

Adam Mogg’s men have 

won six of their 10 fixtures 

and it would not be conceited 

of me to say we could have 

taken out the other four. 

We have been in the mix 

each round and only poor 

finishing and lack of ball 

control has let us down. 

Our big men such as Sam 

Anderson, Tyson Andrews, 

Charlie Faingaa and Rulon 

Nutira have been fantastic and 

have done most of the hard 

work needed to claim two 

points. 

Against Cairns, the Pride’s 

kicking game was superb, 

pinning us into corners and 

making us force our way out 

of our own half throughout 

the match. 

We still did almost enough 

to clinch the match if not for 

not finishing off breaks and 

the Pride scoring against the 

run of play. 

I made the trip to Port 

Moresby to watch us take on 

the PNG Hunters. 

We matched the home side 

all over the park and only 

little mistakes stopped us 

from coming away with a 

victory. 

The team endured a tough 

gig with the long flight and an 

overnight stay, not an ideal 

preparation for a tough 

opponent, but once again 

unforced errors were our 

undoing. 

This was our first match at 

the National Football 

Stadium, which was a real 

eye-opener. The facilities 

were first-class with the 

playing surface and purposebuilt 

stadium ideal for 

spectators and players. 

Anthony Cherrington has 

hit his straps again after being 

out with injury although an 

injury to Aaron Whitchurch 

from the Residents match was 

a severe blow. 

We also have Chris Gesch 

and Danny Bridge on the 

sidelines for a protracted time, 

although I know the ultimate 

pro Chris is will do everything 

in his power to be back on the 

park as soon as possible. 

Hopefully with a string of 

home matches coming our 

way, we can have a strong 

back end to the season and 

figure in the finals. 

I believe we are not far off 

our best and the competition 

will soon realise what a strong 

side we have.

THE Western Grandstand 

is on track to open to 

spectators at the end of this 

month. 

While we played our first 

match against Norths in the 

new complex on May 22, we 

are waiting on 4000 seats to 

complete the picture in the 

grandstand. 

Patrons were able to sit 

on the eastern hill and take 

in the fine spectacle and see 

the progress we have made 

on the stadium. 

We will play it by ear on 

when we start the Eastern 

Grandstand, especially as it 

is not as large a project to 

undertake. It could possibly 

be completed in the next offseason.

Trish Brookes, who has 

celebrated 20 years working

Trish has a warm and 

friendly face and we hope that 

she stays with us for a number 

of years more. 

Vicki Appleton has been 

working part-time looking 

after the Narangba Rangers 

rugby league juniors. With 

some changes in our 

administrative staff, Vicki 

now is fulltime with the 

responsibility of the 

administration of all 800 club 

juniors. 

Vicki has had a long 

association with the Dolphins 

as her two younger brothers 

Glen and Tony were 

outstanding junior players 

and she spent a lot of time 

watching them on the field.

A DINNER was held at 

the club to honour our 2016 

Mal Meninga and Cyril 

Connell Cup teams. 

We were privileged to 

have current Bronco Jack 

Reed as our guest speaker. 

Jack, who spent some 

time with the Dolphins 

juniors, came across as a 

very humble and friendly 

person, delighting everyone 

with his speech. 

We quite often hear of 

footballers behaving badly, 

however Jack proves this is 

not true in the majority of 

cases. 

Our Intrust Super Cup 

coach Adam Mogg 

interviewed Jack, who 

handed out timely advice to 

our two squads and 

acknowledged the part the 

Dolphins played in his 

career after coming to us 

from Caboolture. 

Our two squads might not 

have made the finals, but 

there are some quality 

players on their way into the 

senior ranks with Jayden 

Bishop, who has played at 

the highest level throughout 

his junior career, including 

the under 15 Australian 

Schoolboys in 2014, standing 

out once again.

World of Curries catches on 

THURSDAY

World of Curries has 

been a great hit with our 

patrons. 

The food, entertainment, 

value for money and staff 

interaction has been a feature 

of a night where members are 

rebooking each week. 

World of Curries will 

continue through to the end of 

June when the favourite two 

months of Christmas in July 

take over in July and August. 

All you need to do is book and 

you are assured of a seat when 

arriving on a Thursday night. 

During May we farewelled 

our beverage manager Luke 

Scott, who has gone on to a 

career change in which we 

wish him every success. 

Our catering manager Peter 

Hurley has done an 

outstanding job with our food 

offerings so we did the next 

best thing and offered Peter 

the opportunity to take the 

reins of both the food and 

beverage departments. 

Peter hit the ground running 

and wanted to reward our 

loyal sport bar patrons with a 

great promo for Saturdays. 

Peter has introduced two 

losing ticket draws for 

members and a great beverage 

offering for patrons on 

Saturdays as well. 

Pete has a lot of good ideas 

that will see some exciting 

new initiatives introduced in 

the not too distant future.

The football club’s new 

Western Stand should be 

operational during June and 

we are excited that we will 

have a large open air function 

room in the corporate area 

that will be used to cater for 

crowds of 400 to 500 dining 

patrons. 

The field lights are 

extremely effective and 

Saturday night games will be 

on the agenda come later in 

the year and upcoming 

seasons going forward. 

Already we have confirmed 

the hosting of the Australian

cyclists and motorists.

Volunteers recognised 

CONGRATULATIONS to the five 

volunteers either from the Redcliffe 

Dolphins Football Club or associated groups 

sponsored by Redcliffe Leagues Club who 

were nominated last month for awards as 

part of National Volunteers Week 2016. 

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth 

recognised the volunteers’ outstanding 

contributions at a community afternoon tea. 

“Volunteers play an integral role within 

our community and we cannot thank them 

enough,” Mr Howarth said. 

“In our electorate, we have almost 18,000 

volunteers aged 15 years and above, which 

is approximately 16 per cent of the 

electorate. That’s incredible.” 

Nominees were chosen for their 

outstanding commitment to their 

organisation and the community. 

Mr Howarth said each awardee had made 

an incredible impact on the lives of many 

individuals and the community as a whole.

The event also highlighted the 

achievements of young local sporting 

champions who had been successful in 

applying for a Local Sporting Champions 

Grant of $500. 

The Local Sporting Champions program 

is a Federal Government initiative designed 

to provide financial assistance for young 

people aged 12 to 18 towards the cost of 

travel, accommodation, uniforms or 

equipment.

WE all have that one movie theme 

song that gets stuck in our head 

every time that movie is mentioned. 

That’s the way they’re designed and a good 

soundtrack really has the power to make or 

break a film. 

Hours of time and effort goes into creating 

the perfect song to match the movie scene. 

Imagine Titanic without My Heart Will Go On 

or the Breakfast Club without Don’t You 

(Forget About Me). They just wouldn’t be the 

same. 

We know how much fun it is to sing and 

dance along to our favourite movie songs, so 

we wanted to share the fun around and get 

everyone involved. 

Which is why this edition of the Voice Your 

Talent competition is themed Memorable 

Movies. 

We’ve had our warm-up and heats, and now 

it’s time to really get the fun started. June will 

see the semi-finals and finals take place, 

ultimately determining who of our local 

legends has the best voice, all while getting 

our groove on to some movie music favourites. 

Competitors in the semi-finals and finals 

will be required to sing a memorable movie 

song of their choice and costumes to match are 

definitely a must. 

The best finalists on the night will take 

home cash prizes to award them for their talent 

and bravery. Third place will take home $200 

cash, second takes home $500 and first place 

takes home a massive $1000. Imagine all the 

movies you could buy with that. 

Semi-finals are on June 14 and 21 from 

6pm. Entrants will undoubtedly be nervous, so 

if you’re free that night why not come along 

and support them. It’s bound to be a great 

show. 

Winners from the semi-finals will move 

through to the grand final on June 28. This is 

their last chance to show us what they’ve got. 

It will be the best of the best, and is definitely 

worth seeing, so make sure you save the date 

and check it out. 

After the conclusion of this edition of Voice 

Your Talent, our karaoke competition will see 

a few changes. Specifically, we will be 

changing the name to Dolphins Got Talent.

A GRAND STATEMENT 

By TOMARA SPREADBOROUGH 

WITH the first 

instalment of 

Dolphins Stadium, the 

Western Grandstand, 

inching closer to 

completion, we wanted to 

bring together some of the 

women who support the 

Dolphins for a special 

Dolphins Ladies Day so 

they could see for 

themselves our changing 

face and the future of our 

football club. 

It was incredible to stand 

together in Round 11 on the deck 

of the Beetsons Room and look 

out to where we have watched so 

many games from the grass of the 

Western hill, to see what will 

eventually be a 10,000-seat icon of 

the Moreton Bay region taking 

shape. 

The new grandstand, and 

eventually the stadium, will take 

our competition to a new level 

and mean that a day at the local 

footy can be done in style, with 

access to state-of-the-art facilities 

and amenities. 

As we all came together at 

Ladies Day, I reflected on how the 

women behind the Dolphins are 

interwoven into the fabric of what 

makes our Dolphins brand pivotal 

in the Moreton Bay region. 

Ladies Day 2016 gave our team 

a chance to show what’s possible 

to a group of women to whom the 

Dolphins brand means many 

things. 

From the mums who are 

chauffeuring our 760 juniors to 

and from training, our 85 per cent 

of female managers who keep our 

47 junior teams running like 

clockwork, our players’ partners 

who are looking after the babies 

while our top 25, BRL and Colts 

dads pull on the Dolphins jersey 

and our sponsors and supporters 

at all levels of government – the 

women who support the Dolphins 

are our driving force. 

It seemed logical that we should 

come together and look out upon 

how far the Dolphins have come, 

seeing the tangible evidence in the 

form of the Western Grandstand 

in front of us. 

Notably, our major sponsor, 

Village Motors, is headed by our 

long-time supporter Marlene 

Newcombe and our Clubhouse 

sponsorship is welcoming more 

women in business into the 

Dolphins community. 

Koliana Winchester, our 

Division 5 councillor, never misses 

an opportunity to show her 

support for the Dolphins, and with 

our Mayor Allan Sutherland and 

Division 6 councillor James 

Houghton, has been integral in 

pushing our vision forward.

on recognising our potential to 

become a hub for the community 

of the Moreton Bay region. 

His support and advocacy of 

Dolphin Stadium and the Moreton 

Bay region has meant that our 

ideas have grabbed the attention 

of those who can make them a 

reality. It was hard for me on the 

day not to fast forward 12 months 

and think about Ladies Day 2017 

and beyond. In my mind, Dolphin 

Stadium will play host to major 

sporting spectacles, corporate 

functions and special events. In July 

this year, we will host the Australian 

Schoolboys v England Test and 

what a tremendous opportunity it 

will be us to show the rugby league 

community how far our 

competition has come. 

It will be a place for our 

community to come together and 

celebrate the sporting and other 

achievements of the Moreton Bay 

region and show what is possible 

when a community gets behind a 

great idea. 

It will be a place for me to bring 

my daughters Ava and Livvy so 

they can experience live sport on 

a large scale, in a safe and family 

friendly environment, and then run 

on the field at halftime with all the 

other Dolphins kids. 

I would like to thank the women 

of the Dolphins community who 

joined us at this year’s Ladies Day. 

Mark it in your diary for next year. 

I’m confident that at next year’s 

event we will be toasting the near 

completion of Stage 2 of Dolphin 

Stadium while enjoying corporate 

hospitality in the Western 

Grandstand.

DOLPHINS Clubhouse sponsor Big Dog Pet 

Foods changed the life of a young Brisbane girl 

recently by donating $25,000 to enable the 

purchase of an assistance dog. 

Akira, 3, suffers from a rare, severe form of 

epilepsy which means she has not yet been able to 

speak and suffers up to 100 seizures a day. 

Fundraising efforts have been trying to raise 

money for a specially-trained Smart Pups assistance 

dog to become Akira’s companion and prevent her 

from hurting herself during her seizures. 

Colts assistant coach Chris Essex and wife 

Kirsten, owners of Big Dog Pet Foods, made the 

generous donation after hearing about Akira’s 

story and fundraising efforts. 

“We heard about Akira while we were travelling. 

I rang Smart Pups to find out where the fundraising 

was up to and we made the decision to cover the 

cost of the assistance dog,” Mrs Essex said. 

“For us it was a no brainer. It was something we 

really wanted to do.” 

As well as covering costs for the purchase and

THE Village Motors Dolphins wore 

orange socks in rounds 11 and 12 in 

honour of Family and Domestic Violence 

Prevention Month. 

This annual initiative aims to raise 

awareness of the personal and social 

impacts of family and domestic violence. 

The team from Zonta Redcliffe 

formed a guard of honour as the 

Dolphins took the field in their match 

against the Burleigh Bears in round 12. 

The Zonta team also had a marquee 

set up on game day, handing out 

merchandise and talking to Dolphins 

fans about the importance of raising 

awareness of family and domestic 

violence.

models for our juniors and other young 

sportspeople in the Moreton Bay

Brisbane Poinsettias rep team.

Ashley Harawira, Curtis Johnston, Jaz 

Nahu Main, Rinsma Saueha, Kyle Van 

Klaveren and Mitch Wilson were all 

selected in the preliminary squad, 

although Brady looks a certain nonstarter 

after a knee injury that will keep 

him out for up to six weeks. 

A final squad of 19 will be named for 

the QRL State Carnival on the weekend 

of June 3-5 at Southport’s Owen Park. 

The squad is made of players from the 

nine Brisbane-based BRL clubs and they 

will take on the Central Crows, Northern 

Marlins and South East Queensland. 

After the State Carnival, the XXXX 

Queensland Rangers team will be chosen 

to take on a Ron Massey Cup (Sydney) on 

Sunday, July 24 at Burleigh Heads after a 

week-long training camp. 

We would like to congratulate our BRL 

affiliate club the Albany Creek Gaters 

coach Craig Rodgers, who will be in 

charge of the side for the week. 

I convey my plaudits also to all the 

Dolphins who have made the preliminary 

squad, but especially Mitch Wilson. 

Mitch is a great contributor to both 

the club and his side and plays well above 

his weight. He might not be ready yet for 

the Queensland Cup, but who knows 

after another pre-season.

I MUST admit I was extremely worried when I 

saw Chris Gesch collapse in the fifth minute of the 

match against the Pride. 

Chris is as tough as teak and wouldn’t surrender 

unless he had a serious injury. I feared the worst 

case scenario with his knee, however it appears it is 

a grade 2/3 ligament strain and he should be back in 

action the weekend after the bye. After a strong 

start to his season, Danny Bridge had a knee 

operation and was out for a few weeks, although he 

returned in A grade on May 22 in a reassuring sign 

for everyone.

Nicholls plays down interstate rivalries

Redcliffe Dolphins halfback 

Darren Nicholls did just that in 

last month’s Residents clash at 

Langlands Park. 

Nicholls made his first appearance for 

the Queensland Residents, just a year 

after making his representative debut for 

the NSW Residents. 

Back-up halfback at the Broncos, 

Nicholls has been rewarded for his 

stellar form for the Dolphins this year, 

leading the club’s point scoring tally in 

the Intrust Super Cup. 

It puts him fifth in the competition for 

points scored and his expert game 

management is a big reason for Redcliffe 

sitting fifth on the ladder. 

Nicholls said although it was a bit 

strange wearing Queensland colours, he 

was happy to be rewarded for a good 

start to the year.

“It’s pretty good. When I heard about 

my selection I was pretty excited. It was 

a good game to be a part of,” Nicholls

Redcliffe team and my teammates. 

“Mum and Dad are very happy for me. 

My older brother Cameron has a few 

queries because he’s a staunch New 

South Welshmen. He even captained 

New South Wales touch football. 

“My uncle lives in Queensland and 

gets out to all my games so he was there 

on the weekend.” 

Nicholls first signed with the Broncos 

in 2014 before moving to the South 

Sydney Rabbitohs in the middle of the 

2015 season to pursue his NRL dream.

Reynolds and John Sutton saw the 

27-year-old return to Brisbane for 

another crack at the NRL in 2016 and he 

now feels right at home in the Queensland 

capital. 

“Going back to Souths was a great 

experience. I spent a bit of time working 

on the defensive part of my game,” he 

said. 

“They’re a good club, but I’m really 

grateful to be back at the Broncos. I like 

being there and Wayne (Bennett) has a 

great system. There’s a great bunch of 

people at the Broncos and that’s really 

good for me. 

“Every week I just get out there and 

do my best. I always want to improve and 

be a better player each year. 

“I always get stuck in after each game 

and try and work on a few things. I do 

feel like I’m improving. 

“I get out there for my Queensland 

Cup team and put my best foot forward 

for them. Being able to play in the game 

for Queensland was a good reward for 

me.”

FORMER Dolphin Cameron Cullen’s meteoric 

rise in the past 12 months has led to one of his 

greatest accomplishments, after he was 

named captain of the Queensland Residents. 

After last year serving his time in the 

Residents camp as the 18th man, the 22-yearold 

was named skipper of the side for the clash 

against NSW by coach Aaron Zimmerle. 

And following a dream start to his Intrust 

Super Cup season with the Burleigh Bears, it’s 

not hard to see why Cullen was handed the 

responsibility. 

His form this year also earned him an NRL 

debut for the Gold Coast Titans against 

Cronulla. 

With two first-grade games and the 

experience of last year’s Residents’ camp 

under his belt, Cullen said he was ready to 

take the next step of his career and become 

the leader of the rep team. 

“I am definitely looking to be more of a 

leader,” he said. 

“Being 18th man last year, and it was my 

first year in, I probably wasn’t much of a leader 

but I did pick up a lot. 

“Having played on a bigger stage (for the 

Titans), it’s going to help.” 

Fox hunts down

staff with his attitude and work

Fox went close to making his 

debut against Wynnum Manly but 

Mogg opted to keep him as 18th 

man. 

“This is a great reward for 

persistence and hard work,”

Fox, the younger brother of 

former premiership-winning 

Dolphin Chris, joined the club in 

2009, playing for Steve Kavanagh’s 

Colts side. 

After two years in Colts, Fox 

graduated to the senior grades and 

was a member of the Dolphins A 

grade premiership side coached by 

Andrew Wynyard. 

In 2012, Fox played alongside his 

brother Chris in the A grade final, 

however the Fox brothers didn’t 

get the result they desperately 

wanted, with Easts walking away 

the victors. 

Injury wasn’t kind to Fox during 

the next two seasons where he 

managed to get on the field only 11 

times, eight of them in 2013. 

During his time away from the 

game, Johnnie and his wife Kaley 

welcomed their beautiful daughter 

Taylor-Jayde into the world.

Chicken and Prawn Stir Fry. 

John loves Asian style food and the unique

He also loves the simplicity and freshness that 

this cuisine can provide. 

John explains that there are so many elements 

of beauty in this dish. The first thing you 

see when the meal is brought to your table are 

the vibrant colours on the plate. 

Incorporated in the dish are capsicum, baby 

corn, bok choy, coriander, chicken and prawns, 

all of which bring their own unique visual 

appeal to the plate. 

The next thing you notice are the flavours 

and aromas. All of the above ingredients are 

combined with other flavouring ingredients, 

such as ginger, to give it a traditional Asian 

taste and smell. Its simplistic construction and 

preparation means that all of the flavours stay 

vibrant and fresh. This fabulous meal is available 

at lunch and dinner in Bunny’s Family 

Restaurant all throughout June.

Christmas comes around early 

IT’S getting closer to being halfway 

through the year, it’s getting colder 

and last year’s holiday season is 

probably a distant memory by now. 

So naturally, it’s about time that we get 

excited about Christmas. 

Well, Christmas in July anyway. The 

Christmas buffet is a popular theme for our 

Dolphins HQ Thursday nights and that’s 

completely understandable. It’s hard to resist 

the temptation of delicious Christmas food. 

HERE at the Leagues Club there is no 

shortage of variety. We have plenty to do, 

from bingo, to live entertainment to a 

dedicated sports bar, there’s something to 

keep everyone entertained. 

While there is plenty going on that caters 

to different tastes, we also have several 

special places that bring everyone together. 

These are our restaurants and café. It’s 

easy for everyone to come together over one 

of the common interests that we share with 

just about everyone else – food. 

While Bunny’s is perfect for a family 

meal and Koopa is perfect for coffee and a 

catch-up, we have one more place to eat for 

when you want that extra element of special. 

Dolphins HQ is a lovely place to sit and 

catch up on Dolphins history any day of the 

week. However, it makes a transition into a 

decorated restaurant twice a week on 

Wednesday and Thursday nights. 

On Wednesday night between 6pm and 

8pm is steak night, known as Steak Your 

Claim. The scene is set with tables that are 

made up with white table cloths and menus 

for your perusal. 

As you come in, you are greeted by our 

friendly staff and can take a seat in either a

Rewarding members at DHP 

THE reality of darker mornings and 

cooler nights are now upon us. 

Traditionally we make more excuses in winter 

than any other time of the year, however we have 

some of the best winter weather in the world. 

Most of you have heard that old saying, “summer 

bodies are made in winter”. The majority already

Some of us choose to file this away into the back

large hot chocolates every night before bed and

5kg over winter, says the Dietitians Association of

According to this statistic, that equates to just

Salad 

Method 

Pre-heat oven to 180*C 

Place the chunks of sweet potato in a large bowl, 

season well with salt and freshly cracked pepper 

and a good drizzle of olive oil. Massage well with your 

hands making sure each piece is evenly coated with 

the golden goodness of the olive oil.

Ingredients 

• 1 medium sized sweet potato, cut into chunks 

• ½ a block of Danish feta, broken into chunks 

• 1 large handful of baby spinach 

• ½ cup of toasted pinenuts 

• Good quality balsamic vinegar 

• Good quality extra virgin olive oil 

• Salt and pepper 

Prep Time 

10 mins 

Cook Time

Serves 

One 

Place on a tray, with baking paper and pop into the 

oven and bake until just tender and a little golden :) 

In another large clean bowl, throw your spinach 

leaves, nuts and Danish feta in, with a small amount 

of pepper and salt, toss gently. 

Add the sweet potato and a little balsamic and toss 

gently again, being careful not to smoosh the feta 

everywhere. 

Place in a large serving bowl ready to go 

aside your favourite mains or simply 

by itself.

WE have recently cooked up a few sausages for the 

development squads and junior teams. 

I am continually impressed by these young boys and girls, 

who are extremely well mannered and polite to the Old Boys. 

I know our members love doing activities like this and the 

appreciation shown by the players, officials and the parents 

makes it even more enjoyable. 

We also had another fantastic night of darts and laughter 

with the Redcliffe Darts Club at its home base at the 

showgrounds. We pass on an enormous thank-you for their 

hospitality and use of their equipment. 

We will be having a social evening at the Leagues Club on 

Friday, June 17 at 7pm. If anyone is interested in joining in the 

festivities please let us know for catering purposes. 

A couple of weeks after that we are off to the Caloundra Cup 

on Saturday, July 2. The bus is open to anyone. You don’t need 

to be a member to come along. 

You just need to be prepared to put up with us old fellows 

for the trip up and back. 

In August, we will take a bus over to Langlands Parks to 

watch the Dolphins take on the Easts Tigers. Let Shane McKay

Graham’s $1000 Birthday 

GRAHAM Russell might not be living 

on the Peninsula yet but he is still 

partaking of the good life. 

Graham, membership number 9684, took 

home $1000 on April 28 in the monthly 

Birthday Card Draw. 

“We are in the process of moving to the 

Peninsula from Little Mountain on the 

Sunshine Coast,” Graham said. 

“We went along to the draw on my wife 

Betty’s insistence and it went on with no 

winner. But I said someone has to win it and it 

turned out to be me.” 

The Russells, who lived at Scarborough for 

seven years from 2000, joined the club again as 

meeting place for their family. 

“The club was about halfway from where 

we were on the Sunshine Coast and the 

Brisbane suburbs of the kids,” he said. 

“It was halfway for everyone to have a 

family meal so worked out really well. I would 

like to thank the club for the promotion and the 

$1000 has come in very handy.”
