Meat Loaf
chews up
dance floor
HE’S sold more than 80 million
records worldwide spanning a
career over four decades.
This flamboyant American
musician, singer, songwriter, record
producer and actor goes by his more
aptly stage name, he is none other
than rock legend, Meat Loaf.
Paying homage to one of the
world’s most famous and polarising
rock stars of a generation, the
Redcliffe Leagues Club presents a
tribute experience like no other.
This world-class band takes you
back to the seventies and eighties
with their raw rock reproduction of
all the classic hits from the Bat out
of Hell album right through to Bat
out of Hell II.
Fronted by award-winning lead
vocalist Paul Brown, whose searing
vocals reproduces Meat Loaf in his
heyday, every note to perfection, his
resemblance to Meat Loaf is
uncanny.
Joining Paul on stage is one of
Brisbane’s true female rock
vocalists, Tara Graham.
This five-piece band is absolutely
dynamite with so much energy they
can’t possibly fit it all into just the
one show, presenting the Great
American Rock Show.
Paul, Tara and the band will get
the night pumping with the very
best of American rock classics to get
the night going. Channelling all
your favourites from then and now,
to a level very few do justice.
Also don’t miss DJ Luke on the
decks from 7pm until late. So get
your dance on and join us on the
floor on Friday, June 24 for a night
not to be missed.
CALL TO ARMS FOR ORIGIN SUPPORTERS
IT’S state versus state, mate
versus mate.
It all comes down to three
matches, 240 minutes of sheer
passion, grit and determination.
Who will get bragging rights in
2016 as these old foes go head to
head once more for State of Origin
glory?
There’s plenty of reason to get
excited about this year’s series
blockbuster. Don’t miss a beat, the
best place to catch all the action live
across all three games is on the big
screen and around the club at the
Redcliffe Leagues Club from
7.30pm.
With five big screens and 21 multi
screens on offer, there isn’t a bad
seat in the house.
A game without atmosphere just
doesn’t cut it, and you simply don’t
have atmosphere without the colour,
vibrancy and sound that resonates
from true diehard supporters to the
social supporter.
Come in your maroon, come in
your blue. This is a call to arms, the
best-dressed Queensland and New
South Wales supporters as judged at
halftime in the Legend’s Lounge,
will each win themselves a $100
food and beverage tab for showing
their support.
As avid footy fans, we know you
want more and the Dolphins
continues to deliver.
Just for being a Redcliffe Leagues
Club member, when you swipe your
membership card at any club kiosk
on game day from 5pm until
halftime, you’ll have a chance to win
a replica State of Origin jersey of
your choice valued at $160 each
thanks to What’s Your Team at
Redcliffe.
Not a member of the club as yet
and don’t want to miss out on this
great offer? Well it’s not too late,
visit our friendly reception desk staff
on the night and for just $20 for five
years’ membership, you’ll also
receive the remainder of 2016 on us.
This is exceptional value for any
visitor of the club, and not only gives
you the opportunity to win some
great prizes along the way, but also
starts you on your Royal Rewards
journey or more importantly saves
you money with exclusive member
only food and drink pricing available,
plus so much more.
To add a little more spice to each
State of Origin game, and to make it
that even more invigorating than it
already is, or ever could be, set your
sights on the free Redcliffe Dolphins
app.
This little beauty is your ticket for
a chance at winning yourself a $100
food and beverage package at the
Redcliffe Leagues Club.
It’s as easy as downloading the
app from the Apple Store or Google
Play Store on your mobile or tablet
device and following the prompts
under Leagues Club, Promotions,
State of Origin Doubles or Pick the
Score for your chance to win one if
not both of these great prizes.
That’s it, pick the first try scorers
from each team, or the match result
correctly for your chance to win.
There’s still so much more on
offer down at the Redcliffe Leagues
Club this Origin series, so make the
Dolphins your venue for live sport
and entertainment and make this the
series to remember.

Break open the bank
AT the end of each working week, the weekend brings
with it the joy and excitement of something new, fresh
and exciting.
The month of May saw the club go a little crazy
with Saturday Madness, giving away big cash all
afternoon. However, this put the crowd favourite –
Break the Bank – on pause. We are pleased to
announce that this June, it’s back.
Break the Bank is a gaming promotion where entry
is as easy as making sure your membership card is in
the gaming machines while you are playing – between
the promotional times, of course.
Just $20 turnover gains you an entry for your
chance at winning one of eight $250 cash prizes.
Entries begin to accumulate from 2pm every
Saturday afternoon, with the first draw taking place
at 2.30pm.
Each subsequent draw will follow 30 minutes later,
each rewarding the lucky winners with $250 cash
each. That’s a total of $2000 in cash prizes given away
each week.
WHO JOIN THE VOTED DOLPHINS FOR LESS NOW, ENTERTAINMENT?
$20 FOR 5 YEARS
A beer and a bet
THERE’S not much that could beat a
lazy afternoon down at your local
with your mates and some cold beers.
We would happen to agree.
Then again, putting a little spice
into the afternoon with a quick bet on
the races certainly could liven the
afternoon up. It’s all made that much
easier with our fully decked out
International Sports Bar – big screen
TVs, multiple terminals, helpful staff
and a great atmosphere.
While this is the great makings of a
stellar Saturday afternoon at the
Dolphins, we know we can make it so
much more. Introducing, Bull’s
Winter Carnival.
This celebration of all things racing
The more you play, the more chances you have at
winning. With the opportunity win more than once, it
adds a little more excitement to your visit down to the
Dolphins.
Just remember, as usual our winners can only claim
their prize if they are present when their name is
called out, so don’t stray too far from the gaming
floor during the draw times.
Good luck!
is more than just a promotion.
Firstly, we’re going to take those
losing TAB tickets you’ve
accumulated during the afternoon’s
races (between noon and 5pm) and
put them in the draw for two second
chance draws at 3pm and 5pm.
Each draw will see one lucky
winner walk away with $100 cash.
Now that’s some great odds.
Then we’re going to introduce you
all to our new food and beverage
manager Peter “Bull” Hurley. That’s
right – come and say high to Bull
during the promotion and see what
great offers he has for you. He may
even have a tip on race six that you
just can’t pass up!
Members
pay less
DON’T forget to hand your
membership card over to staff
every time you buy something
from the club.
Whether it’s a beer, a bite or a
bucket hat from the bottleshop –
it’s all a whole lot cheaper for
members.
Plus, you will also receive
rewards points with every dollar
spent, which can then be used to
buy more or simply cash in.
So don’t miss out on all the
benefits your membership to the
Dolphins can afford you every day.
DOLPHINS (Akaroa), NEWS, New Zealand JUNE 2016 08:00 AM 07:00 PM
Please mention the Dolphins News when responding to the advertisements

Dolphins move up the ladder
AT the time of writing
this column, the
Dolphins are sitting in
the top five of the Intrust
Super Cup.
Adam Mogg’s men have
won six of their 10 fixtures
and it would not be conceited
of me to say we could have
taken out the other four.
We have been in the mix
each round and only poor
finishing and lack of ball
control has let us down.
Our big men such as Sam
Anderson, Tyson Andrews,
Charlie Faingaa and Rulon
Nutira have been fantastic and
have done most of the hard
work needed to claim two
points.
Against Cairns, the Pride’s
kicking game was superb,
pinning us into corners and
making us force our way out
of our own half throughout
the match.
We still did almost enough
to clinch the match if not for
not finishing off breaks and
the Pride scoring against the
run of play.
I made the trip to Port
Moresby to watch us take on
the PNG Hunters.
We matched the home side
all over the park and only
little mistakes stopped us
from coming away with a
victory.
The team endured a tough
gig with the long flight and an
overnight stay, not an ideal
preparation for a tough
opponent, but once again
unforced errors were our
undoing.
This was our first match at
the National Football
Stadium, which was a real
eye-opener. The facilities
were first-class with the
playing surface and purposebuilt
stadium ideal for
spectators and players.
Anthony Cherrington has
hit his straps again after being
out with injury although an
injury to Aaron Whitchurch
from the Residents match was
a severe blow.
We also have Chris Gesch
and Danny Bridge on the
sidelines for a protracted time,
although I know the ultimate
pro Chris is will do everything
in his power to be back on the
park as soon as possible.
Hopefully with a string of
home matches coming our
way, we can have a strong
back end to the season and
figure in the finals.
I believe we are not far off
our best and the competition
will soon realise what a strong
side we have.
★ ★ ★ ★
THE Western Grandstand
is on track to open to
spectators at the end of this
month.
While we played our first
match against Norths in the
new complex on May 22, we
are waiting on 4000 seats to
complete the picture in the
grandstand.
Patrons were able to sit
on the eastern hill and take
in the fine spectacle and see
the progress we have made
on the stadium.
We will play it by ear on
when we start the Eastern
Grandstand, especially as it
is not as large a project to
undertake. It could possibly
be completed in the next offseason.
★ ★ ★ ★
OUR staff are one of the
greatest assets of the Redcliffe
Leagues Club.
It is always a pleasure to
record the achievements of
our loyal and hard-working
employees.
Trish Brookes, who has
celebrated 20 years working
in Bunny’s Family Restaurant,
always greets our members
and guests with a smile and
helps make their visit
memorable.
Trish has a warm and
friendly face and we hope that
she stays with us for a number
of years more.
Vicki Appleton has been
working part-time looking
after the Narangba Rangers
rugby league juniors. With
some changes in our
administrative staff, Vicki
now is fulltime with the
responsibility of the
administration of all 800 club
juniors.
Vicki has had a long
association with the Dolphins
as her two younger brothers
Glen and Tony were
outstanding junior players
and she spent a lot of time
watching them on the field.
★ ★ ★ ★
A DINNER was held at
the club to honour our 2016
Mal Meninga and Cyril
Connell Cup teams.
We were privileged to
have current Bronco Jack
Reed as our guest speaker.
Jack, who spent some
time with the Dolphins
juniors, came across as a
very humble and friendly
person, delighting everyone
with his speech.
We quite often hear of
footballers behaving badly,
however Jack proves this is
not true in the majority of
cases.
Our Intrust Super Cup
coach Adam Mogg
interviewed Jack, who
handed out timely advice to
our two squads and
acknowledged the part the
Dolphins played in his
career after coming to us
from Caboolture.
Our two squads might not
have made the finals, but
there are some quality
players on their way into the
senior ranks with Jayden
Bishop, who has played at
the highest level throughout
his junior career, including
the under 15 Australian
Schoolboys in 2014, standing
out once again.
DOLPHINS NEWS, JUNE 2016 — 3

World of Curries catches on
THURSDAY
night’s
World of Curries has
been a great hit with our
patrons.
The food, entertainment,
value for money and staff
interaction has been a feature
of a night where members are
rebooking each week.
World of Curries will
continue through to the end of
June when the favourite two
months of Christmas in July
take over in July and August.
All you need to do is book and
you are assured of a seat when
arriving on a Thursday night.
During May we farewelled
our beverage manager Luke
Scott, who has gone on to a
career change in which we
wish him every success.
Our catering manager Peter
Hurley has done an
outstanding job with our food
offerings so we did the next
best thing and offered Peter
the opportunity to take the
reins of both the food and
beverage departments.
Peter hit the ground running
and wanted to reward our
loyal sport bar patrons with a
great promo for Saturdays.
Peter has introduced two
losing ticket draws for
members and a great beverage
offering for patrons on
Saturdays as well.
Pete has a lot of good ideas
that will see some exciting
new initiatives introduced in
the not too distant future.
Have a chat with Peter
when you’re in the club as his
friendly face is easily
recognisable.
The football club’s new
Western Stand should be
operational during June and
we are excited that we will
have a large open air function
room in the corporate area
that will be used to cater for
crowds of 400 to 500 dining
patrons.
The field lights are
extremely effective and
Saturday night games will be
on the agenda come later in
the year and upcoming
seasons going forward.
Already we have confirmed
the hosting of the Australian
Schoolboys v Great Britain
Schoolboys Test in July.
The QRL is also very
interested in offering some
standout representative games
to the stadium as well.
Our development manager
Steve Crawford is actively
seeking carnivals to be held at
our grounds. It’s all go ahead
for the stadium.
Finally I hope the upgrade
for Klingner Road will be
complete by early June. What
has seemed a lifetime of
continual disruption to our
patrons and traffic flows will
be worth it to pedestrians,
cyclists and motorists.
We hope to coincide a few
promotions with Klingner
Road’s opening to reward our
very patient members, so be
on the lookout.
Cheers,
Tony Murphy
Chief executive officer
Now that’s a bingo
HAVE you ever wondered
what it would be like to
play bingo, but was too
nervous to try?
Or perhaps you thought
you’d never find the time,
or the money. Bingo is a
fantastic game to play by
yourself or with friends,
and you don’t need any
experience.
Our custom-built bingo
facility has PETs, or
Personal Electronic
Tickets, allowing for you
to experience the fun and
excitement of bingo,
without having to know
ALL the rules.
You simply push the
number that was just
called onto your display,
and the device does the
rest for you. It even tells
you when to yell out
BINGO!
Sometimes new things
can be exciting, so this
doesn’t dissuade you from
the game.
Perhaps you just can’t
find the time to come down
and try it for yourself.
Did you know we host
eight games of bingo every
week – three of those on
the weekend. We have
morning and night time
sessions, each with
different jackpots and
games to play.
Then there’s the cost.
You can receive a full
bingo experience for as
little as $25, giving you a
chance in every game.
Plus, with our payouts
having a minimum of $20
on to $30, you have a pretty
good chance of walking
away on top after just one
win – and there’s lots of
those opportunities every
session.
Volunteers recognised
CONGRATULATIONS to the five
volunteers either from the Redcliffe
Dolphins Football Club or associated groups
sponsored by Redcliffe Leagues Club who
were nominated last month for awards as
part of National Volunteers Week 2016.
Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth
recognised the volunteers’ outstanding
contributions at a community afternoon tea.
“Volunteers play an integral role within
our community and we cannot thank them
enough,” Mr Howarth said.
“In our electorate, we have almost 18,000
volunteers aged 15 years and above, which
is approximately 16 per cent of the
electorate. That’s incredible.”
Nominees were chosen for their
outstanding commitment to their
organisation and the community.
Mr Howarth said each awardee had made
an incredible impact on the lives of many
individuals and the community as a whole.
Voice Your
Talent into
final stages
WE all have that one movie theme
song that gets stuck in our head
every time that movie is mentioned.
That’s the way they’re designed and a good
soundtrack really has the power to make or
break a film.
Hours of time and effort goes into creating
the perfect song to match the movie scene.
Imagine Titanic without My Heart Will Go On
or the Breakfast Club without Don’t You
(Forget About Me). They just wouldn’t be the
same.
We know how much fun it is to sing and
dance along to our favourite movie songs, so
we wanted to share the fun around and get
everyone involved.
Which is why this edition of the Voice Your
Talent competition is themed Memorable
Movies.
We’ve had our warm-up and heats, and now
it’s time to really get the fun started. June will
see the semi-finals and finals take place,
ultimately determining who of our local
legends has the best voice, all while getting
our groove on to some movie music favourites.
Competitors in the semi-finals and finals
will be required to sing a memorable movie
song of their choice and costumes to match are
definitely a must.
The best finalists on the night will take
home cash prizes to award them for their talent
and bravery. Third place will take home $200
cash, second takes home $500 and first place
takes home a massive $1000. Imagine all the
movies you could buy with that.
Semi-finals are on June 14 and 21 from
6pm. Entrants will undoubtedly be nervous, so
if you’re free that night why not come along
and support them. It’s bound to be a great
show.
Winners from the semi-finals will move
through to the grand final on June 28. This is
their last chance to show us what they’ve got.
It will be the best of the best, and is definitely
worth seeing, so make sure you save the date
and check it out.
After the conclusion of this edition of Voice
Your Talent, our karaoke competition will see
a few changes. Specifically, we will be
changing the name to Dolphins Got Talent.
Make sure you watch this space for full details
as the end of the competition draws nearer.
A GRAND STATEMENT
By TOMARA SPREADBOROUGH
WITH the first
instalment of
Dolphins Stadium, the
Western Grandstand,
inching closer to
completion, we wanted to
bring together some of the
women who support the
Dolphins for a special
Dolphins Ladies Day so
they could see for
themselves our changing
face and the future of our
football club.
It was incredible to stand
together in Round 11 on the deck
of the Beetsons Room and look
out to where we have watched so
many games from the grass of the
Western hill, to see what will
eventually be a 10,000-seat icon of
the Moreton Bay region taking
shape.
The new grandstand, and
eventually the stadium, will take
our competition to a new level
and mean that a day at the local
footy can be done in style, with
access to state-of-the-art facilities
and amenities.
As we all came together at
Ladies Day, I reflected on how the
women behind the Dolphins are
interwoven into the fabric of what
makes our Dolphins brand pivotal
in the Moreton Bay region.
Ladies Day 2016 gave our team
a chance to show what’s possible
to a group of women to whom the
Dolphins brand means many
things.
From the mums who are
chauffeuring our 760 juniors to
and from training, our 85 per cent
of female managers who keep our
47 junior teams running like
clockwork, our players’ partners
who are looking after the babies
while our top 25, BRL and Colts
dads pull on the Dolphins jersey
and our sponsors and supporters
at all levels of government – the
women who support the Dolphins
are our driving force.
It seemed logical that we should
come together and look out upon
how far the Dolphins have come,
seeing the tangible evidence in the
form of the Western Grandstand
in front of us.
Notably, our major sponsor,
Village Motors, is headed by our
long-time supporter Marlene
Newcombe and our Clubhouse
sponsorship is welcoming more
women in business into the
Dolphins community.
Koliana Winchester, our
Division 5 councillor, never misses
an opportunity to show her
support for the Dolphins, and with
our Mayor Allan Sutherland and
Division 6 councillor James
Houghton, has been integral in
pushing our vision forward.
Federal Member for Petrie Luke
Howarth has been a strong
advocate for the Dolphins, early
on recognising our potential to
become a hub for the community
of the Moreton Bay region.
His support and advocacy of
Dolphin Stadium and the Moreton
Bay region has meant that our
ideas have grabbed the attention
of those who can make them a
reality. It was hard for me on the
day not to fast forward 12 months
and think about Ladies Day 2017
and beyond. In my mind, Dolphin
Stadium will play host to major
sporting spectacles, corporate
functions and special events. In July
this year, we will host the Australian
Schoolboys v England Test and
what a tremendous opportunity it
will be us to show the rugby league
community how far our
competition has come.
It will be a place for our
community to come together and
celebrate the sporting and other
achievements of the Moreton Bay
region and show what is possible
when a community gets behind a
great idea.
It will be a place for me to bring
my daughters Ava and Livvy so
they can experience live sport on
a large scale, in a safe and family
friendly environment, and then run
on the field at halftime with all the
other Dolphins kids.
I would like to thank the women
of the Dolphins community who
joined us at this year’s Ladies Day.
Mark it in your diary for next year.
I’m confident that at next year’s
event we will be toasting the near
completion of Stage 2 of Dolphin
Stadium while enjoying corporate
hospitality in the Western
Grandstand.
Sponsor Big Dog to rescue
DOLPHINS Clubhouse sponsor Big Dog Pet
Foods changed the life of a young Brisbane girl
recently by donating $25,000 to enable the
purchase of an assistance dog.
Akira, 3, suffers from a rare, severe form of
epilepsy which means she has not yet been able to
speak and suffers up to 100 seizures a day.
Fundraising efforts have been trying to raise
money for a specially-trained Smart Pups assistance
dog to become Akira’s companion and prevent her
from hurting herself during her seizures.
Colts assistant coach Chris Essex and wife
Kirsten, owners of Big Dog Pet Foods, made the
generous donation after hearing about Akira’s
story and fundraising efforts.
“We heard about Akira while we were travelling.
I rang Smart Pups to find out where the fundraising
was up to and we made the decision to cover the
cost of the assistance dog,” Mrs Essex said.
“For us it was a no brainer. It was something we
really wanted to do.”
As well as covering costs for the purchase and
training of the dog, Big Dog Pet Foods will also
provide its food for life.
“We believe at Big Dog that nutrition is the
foundation for good health so it’s important to us
that Akira’s assistance pup has the best natural
food products available,” Mrs Essex said.
Although smart pups can be identified as
companions as early as eight weeks old, their
training can take 18 months to two years.
A raffle set up by a family friend is running with
prizes such as tickets to the State of Origin and
signed State of Origin jerseys is still running and
will be drawn on June 9.
Dolphins say no to family violence
THE Village Motors Dolphins wore
orange socks in rounds 11 and 12 in
honour of Family and Domestic Violence
Prevention Month.
This annual initiative aims to raise
awareness of the personal and social
impacts of family and domestic violence.
The team from Zonta Redcliffe
formed a guard of honour as the
Dolphins took the field in their match
against the Burleigh Bears in round 12.
The Zonta team also had a marquee
set up on game day, handing out
merchandise and talking to Dolphins
fans about the importance of raising
awareness of family and domestic
violence.
“We know that our players are role
models for our juniors and other young
sportspeople in the Moreton Bay
region,” general manager of football
operations, Grant Cleal said.
“Having our juniors and fans see the
players running out in orange socks
sends a strong message to our
community about the support the
Dolphins give to campaigns that say no
to family and domestic violence.”
Bunker digs a grave for itself
THE Bunker was put forward as the taken with how tired and flat the Maroons
major initiative for our code this looked. It was as if they had tried to cram
season.
too much into what is a short preparation
The NRL invested a lot of money into The Bunker, and endeavoured to manufacture
money that in my view would have been better
directed into junior development.
A simple breakdown of The Bunker set-up is that
it provides more camera angles before a decision is
recommended by an off-field official. And as we have
magnificent sweeping plays instead on
concentrating on the basics.
With a new team and new faces,
defence has to be the cornerstone of the
game plan and that seemed a little lost.
seen quite a few times, the decisions have not all From a club perspective, I was
been correct. Ultimately someone has to make a disappointed that despite Aaron
decision and there always will be human error
involved, which is one of the factors that makes
rugby league the great game it is.
If you remember, the referee’s call in the past
have been what added to the drama and atmosphere
of many matches and that now has been taken away
as everyone waits for a decision from up high.
An injection of funds into junior development,
where our code is under severe pressure from AFL
and soccer, would make much more sense.
And as the season draws on, the code is always
sitting and waiting on rulings from Sydney on
various matters instead of the NRL, QRL and
NSWRL sitting down with the referees and drawing
a line in the sand. Technology can only go so far, the
game needs its human element to keep it thriving.
We don’t see the same luxury of a hundred
camera angles in the Queensland Cup and junior
and lower grade matches survive on one man in
Whitchurch being hurt in the training
game, he still ended up playing.
Being a contracted Broncos player,
Aaron would have come into the frame
for a spot in the Origin period but ended
up missing two fixtures and putting
himself behind the eight ball a little.
He has nothing to gain really from
playing in the Residents, especially with
an injury, and it would have been better
if he had withdrawn. I thought the
situation was handled poorly and our
club and Aaron were the losers of it.
As usual, Sam Anderson carried the
ball up strongly while halfback Darren
Nicholls tried hard but appeared burden
by a million plays running through his
head.
Ultimately a simple game plan would
white in the middle and his two helpers.
have been suffice and allowed our
This Sydney-centric pattern of thought extends
to judiciary rulings (such as the shoulder charge)
I must admit though that it was refreshing for our
players and staff to play in front of family, friends and
fans. The eastern side hill was generously populated
and the entire day of having three grades at home
excited them and provided great support.
THE representative season is in full
swing and our BRL A grade has scored a
swag of spots.
The South East Queensland Division
named 11 Dolphins contracted players in
a preliminary squad of 43 players for its
Brisbane Poinsettias rep team.
Josh Benjamin, John Brady, Taylor
Brown, Tyson Gamble, Hayden Hansen,
Ashley Harawira, Curtis Johnston, Jaz
Nahu Main, Rinsma Saueha, Kyle Van
Klaveren and Mitch Wilson were all
selected in the preliminary squad,
although Brady looks a certain nonstarter
after a knee injury that will keep
him out for up to six weeks.
A final squad of 19 will be named for
the QRL State Carnival on the weekend
of June 3-5 at Southport’s Owen Park.
The squad is made of players from the
nine Brisbane-based BRL clubs and they
will take on the Central Crows, Northern
Marlins and South East Queensland.
After the State Carnival, the XXXX
Queensland Rangers team will be chosen
to take on a Ron Massey Cup (Sydney) on
Sunday, July 24 at Burleigh Heads after a
week-long training camp.
We would like to congratulate our BRL
affiliate club the Albany Creek Gaters
coach Craig Rodgers, who will be in
charge of the side for the week.
I convey my plaudits also to all the
Dolphins who have made the preliminary
squad, but especially Mitch Wilson.
Mitch is a great contributor to both
the club and his side and plays well above
his weight. He might not be ready yet for
the Queensland Cup, but who knows
after another pre-season.
★ ★ ★ ★
I MUST admit I was extremely worried when I
saw Chris Gesch collapse in the fifth minute of the
match against the Pride.
Chris is as tough as teak and wouldn’t surrender
unless he had a serious injury. I feared the worst
case scenario with his knee, however it appears it is
a grade 2/3 ligament strain and he should be back in
action the weekend after the bye. After a strong
start to his season, Danny Bridge had a knee
operation and was out for a few weeks, although he
returned in A grade on May 22 in a reassuring sign
for everyone.
Nicholls plays down interstate rivalries
• HALFBACK
Darren Nichols in
his Residents role.
FOR most New South
Welshmen, the thought of
wearing Queensland colours is
nothing short of blasphemy, but
Redcliffe Dolphins halfback
Darren Nicholls did just that in
last month’s Residents clash at
Langlands Park.
Nicholls made his first appearance for
the Queensland Residents, just a year
after making his representative debut for
the NSW Residents.
Back-up halfback at the Broncos,
Nicholls has been rewarded for his
stellar form for the Dolphins this year,
leading the club’s point scoring tally in
the Intrust Super Cup.
It puts him fifth in the competition for
points scored and his expert game
management is a big reason for Redcliffe
sitting fifth on the ladder.
Nicholls said although it was a bit
strange wearing Queensland colours, he
was happy to be rewarded for a good
start to the year.
“It’s pretty good. When I heard about
my selection I was pretty excited. It was
a good game to be a part of,” Nicholls
said.
“The first training session felt a bit
weird but the Residents concept is the
best from each state competition and it’s
picked on form. I’m representing my
Redcliffe team and my teammates.
“Mum and Dad are very happy for me.
My older brother Cameron has a few
queries because he’s a staunch New
South Welshmen. He even captained
New South Wales touch football.
“My uncle lives in Queensland and
gets out to all my games so he was there
on the weekend.”
Nicholls first signed with the Broncos
in 2014 before moving to the South
Sydney Rabbitohs in the middle of the
2015 season to pursue his NRL dream.
A lack of opportunities behind
Rabbitohs regulars Luke Keary, Adam
Reynolds and John Sutton saw the
27-year-old return to Brisbane for
another crack at the NRL in 2016 and he
now feels right at home in the Queensland
capital.
“Going back to Souths was a great
experience. I spent a bit of time working
on the defensive part of my game,” he
said.
“They’re a good club, but I’m really
grateful to be back at the Broncos. I like
being there and Wayne (Bennett) has a
great system. There’s a great bunch of
people at the Broncos and that’s really
good for me.
“Every week I just get out there and
do my best. I always want to improve and
be a better player each year.
“I always get stuck in after each game
and try and work on a few things. I do
feel like I’m improving.
“I get out there for my Queensland
Cup team and put my best foot forward
for them. Being able to play in the game
for Queensland was a good reward for
me.”
HARD work seems to be a settled in well, making friends.”
Motors Dolphin Rulon Nutira. Nutira works as a scaffolder on high rises
The 26-year-old forward has caught in Brisbane.
the attention of Redcliffe fans and rivals “I started the pre-season at 118 kilos
with his long minutes and industry in the but with the intense training and hot
middle of the park.
weather here, I have lost 10 kilos,” he said.
The Kiwi has not missed a match since “I’m in the middle of the field and love
the start of the 2016 Intrust Super Cup the tough stuff. It’s my job to help break
campaign, causing plenty of headaches for down the opposition pack. I’ve got plenty
opponents with his charging runs and of help in the big boppers Charlie Faingaa,
brutal defence.
Sam Anderson and Anthony Cherrington.
But he largely arrived unheralded on “The Queensland Cup is pretty tough
CV after graduating from the Christchurch
“I think all our away trips have been a
bit of a blessing in disguise as it has helped
He played with Parramatta and Storm’s
year, before the Dragons signed him. “The trip to PNG was an awesome
He turned out in the Charity Shield experience as I had never been there
against South Sydney before spending the before and it was a shame that we did not
season at the Illawarra Cutters.
have more time Cairns to look around.”
“I was approached by Anthony Griffin Born and raised in Christchurch on
after my season with the Cutters,” he New Zealand’s South Island, Nutira stuck
Crusher Cleal and I signed a two-year environment.
deal with the club.
“There is a little league community
“The club has been very welcoming there and I just liked the game,” he said.
and my family and I love it here. My twin “We actually have a good mix at Redcliffe
daughters are eight turning nine and are of Queenslanders, New South Welshmen
enjoying school at North Lakes and and Kiwis as we all get along.”
Coup for Cameron
FORMER Dolphin Cameron Cullen’s meteoric
rise in the past 12 months has led to one of his
greatest accomplishments, after he was
named captain of the Queensland Residents.
After last year serving his time in the
Residents camp as the 18th man, the 22-yearold
was named skipper of the side for the clash
against NSW by coach Aaron Zimmerle.
And following a dream start to his Intrust
Super Cup season with the Burleigh Bears, it’s
not hard to see why Cullen was handed the
responsibility.
His form this year also earned him an NRL
debut for the Gold Coast Titans against
Cronulla.
With two first-grade games and the
experience of last year’s Residents’ camp
under his belt, Cullen said he was ready to
take the next step of his career and become
the leader of the rep team.
“I am definitely looking to be more of a
leader,” he said.
“Being 18th man last year, and it was my
first year in, I probably wasn’t much of a leader
but I did pick up a lot.
“Having played on a bigger stage (for the
Titans), it’s going to help.”
Fox hunts down
his starting spot
DOLPHINS coach Adam Mogg
handed John Fox, pictured left, his
Intrust Super Cup debut by naming
him in the second row for the
round eight clash with Easts Tigers
at Burpengary.
Fox, who has overcome two
serious lower leg injuries, re-joined
the Dolphins this season after
spending 12 months away from the
game.
During the pre-season, Fox was
one of the hardest-working players
in the club, impressing the coaching
staff with his attitude and work
ethic.
Fox went close to making his
debut against Wynnum Manly but
Mogg opted to keep him as 18th
man.
“This is a great reward for
persistence and hard work,”
Dolphins general manager of
football Grant Cleal said.
Fox, the younger brother of
former premiership-winning
Dolphin Chris, joined the club in
2009, playing for Steve Kavanagh’s
Colts side.
After two years in Colts, Fox
graduated to the senior grades and
was a member of the Dolphins A
grade premiership side coached by
Andrew Wynyard.
In 2012, Fox played alongside his
brother Chris in the A grade final,
however the Fox brothers didn’t
get the result they desperately
wanted, with Easts walking away
the victors.
Injury wasn’t kind to Fox during
the next two seasons where he
managed to get on the field only 11
times, eight of them in 2013.
During his time away from the
game, Johnnie and his wife Kaley
welcomed their beautiful daughter
Taylor-Jayde into the world.
Chicken and Prawn Stir Fry.
John loves Asian style food and the unique
combination of flavours that it is famous for.
He also loves the simplicity and freshness that
this cuisine can provide.
John explains that there are so many elements
of beauty in this dish. The first thing you
see when the meal is brought to your table are
the vibrant colours on the plate.
Incorporated in the dish are capsicum, baby
corn, bok choy, coriander, chicken and prawns,
all of which bring their own unique visual
appeal to the plate.
The next thing you notice are the flavours
and aromas. All of the above ingredients are
combined with other flavouring ingredients,
such as ginger, to give it a traditional Asian
taste and smell. Its simplistic construction and
preparation means that all of the flavours stay
vibrant and fresh. This fabulous meal is available
at lunch and dinner in Bunny’s Family
Restaurant all throughout June.
It’s just $21.90 for members and $23.90 for
non-members and includes a full salad and
vegetable buffet. That is if you still need it after
filling up on stir fry. You don’t want to miss
out, so make sure you try it before it’s gone.
Christmas comes around early
IT’S getting closer to being halfway
through the year, it’s getting colder
and last year’s holiday season is
probably a distant memory by now.
So naturally, it’s about time that we get
excited about Christmas.
Well, Christmas in July anyway. The
Christmas buffet is a popular theme for our
Dolphins HQ Thursday nights and that’s
completely understandable. It’s hard to resist
the temptation of delicious Christmas food.
HERE at the Leagues Club there is no
shortage of variety. We have plenty to do,
from bingo, to live entertainment to a
dedicated sports bar, there’s something to
keep everyone entertained.
While there is plenty going on that caters
to different tastes, we also have several
special places that bring everyone together.
These are our restaurants and café. It’s
easy for everyone to come together over one
of the common interests that we share with
just about everyone else – food.
While Bunny’s is perfect for a family
meal and Koopa is perfect for coffee and a
catch-up, we have one more place to eat for
when you want that extra element of special.
Dolphins HQ is a lovely place to sit and
catch up on Dolphins history any day of the
week. However, it makes a transition into a
decorated restaurant twice a week on
Wednesday and Thursday nights.
On Wednesday night between 6pm and
8pm is steak night, known as Steak Your
Claim. The scene is set with tables that are
made up with white table cloths and menus
for your perusal.
As you come in, you are greeted by our
friendly staff and can take a seat in either a
Our friendly staff will greet you as you walk
in, where you will take a seat and explore the
menu. As always, the menu takes inspiration
from traditional Christmas favourites to bring
to your plate the joy of the festive season.
Start off with pumpkin soup to warm you up
after you’ve braved the July weather to get
here. Follow up with your choice of roast,
including ham, pork and turkey, and a selection
of roast vegetables. Fill up the rest of your
plate with salads and bread rolls and sit down
All tastes covered
booth or at a table.
Choose from rib fillet, eye fillet, sirloin,
T-bone or rump steaks, depending on what
you like to eat and let our friendly staff
know how you would like it to be cooked.
Complete your meal by topping it with
one of our seven sauce options, mushroom,
pepper, chilli, tomato, garlic cream,
hollandaise or gravy. Each meal also
includes a help-yourself salad bar and a
drink of your choice from the options
available.
Steaks are just $24.90 for members and
$26.90 for non-members. Thursday nights
in Dolphins HQ are theme nights, which are
always sure to be exciting. This month the
theme is World of Curries.
Enjoy a selection of delicious curries from
places all over the world and even be
entertained by our traditional dancer for a
short performance at 7pm.
Thursday night meals are available from
6pm for just $24.90 for members, $29.90 for
non-members and $14.90 for kids 12 and
under.
So if you’re looking to try something a
little different this week, come and join us in
Dolphins HQ.
to enjoy your feast.
After you’ve eaten all that you can, there is
even a dessert bar filled with all the best
Christmas desserts for you to indulge in.
Satisfy your sweet tooth and stock up on all
the Christmas goodies before they disappear
again until December.
The room will even be decorated with our
fabulous Christmas decorations, complete with
It’s the perfect way to escape the hustle and
bustle surrounding the middle of the year and
Rewarding members at DHP
THE reality of darker mornings and
cooler nights are now upon us.
Traditionally we make more excuses in winter
than any other time of the year, however we have
some of the best winter weather in the world.
Most of you have heard that old saying, “summer
bodies are made in winter”. The majority already
know this is true.
Some of us choose to file this away into the back
of our minds until we catch ourselves drinking
large hot chocolates every night before bed and
then wake to a subtle tightness around our midsection
the next morning.
Almost four in 10 women (38 percent) and one
in two men (53 percent) are expected to gain up to
5kg over winter, says the Dietitians Association of
Australia.
According to this statistic, that equates to just
over 400 grams per week. So with this in mind, let
us offer some advice and support from the Dolphins
Health Precinct.
Imagine that this year your 400 grams per week
increase becomes a 250 grams per week decrease.
Instead of being 5kg heavier come spring, you are
3kg lighter. This is an 8kg turnaround just by
choosing to continue your exercise program and by
keeping an eye on warm winter temptations.
This can be the difference between healthy and
unhealthy. We have added an easy recipe that you
may like to keep and add to your weekly meal
rotation.
The Dolphins Health Precinct is open early
every morning so that you don’t have to run in the
dark and risk hurting yourself.
Stay safe and train with us this winter. Join in on
one of our fun group fitness or spin classes and
don’t forget our lap lane and hydrotherapy pool is
heated so there are no excuses.
We want to motivate and reward our members
this month with a challenge to keep you focused. If
you visit the facility this month, you can go into the
draw to win one of eight membership benefit
giveaways totalling $900.
This is how easy it is. If you are a member and
you visit the facility more than 15 times in June,
you go into the draw to win free membership with
us.
Work out in your cardio room or gym, join in on
a group fitness, spin or aqua class, Balance Mind
and Body studio or even just go for a swim, do this
more than 15 times and you automatically go into
the draw to win.
So keep your eye out at Dolphins Health Precinct
for this motivating challenge and earn membership
value while you are here. *
Jetty to Jetty is creeping up on us all and for
those of you who haven’t registered yet, come in
and see us at Dolphins Health Precinct to receive
early bird prices all the way up to July 6, whether
you are a member or not.
We have an amazing Dolphins Health Precinct
membership offer for you this month.
• 12 months membership and full facility access
• Gym, group fitness, spin and aqua classes and
lap lane and hydrotherapy pool
• Three personal training sessions
• A chance to win one of four free Jetty to Jetty
entries
• First 15 people receive a Life Fitness pack
• Free 30-minute nutrition assessment
• Flexible membership
• Five-year Redcliffe Leagues Club
membership
All of this for only $699 or $14.50 per week
direct debit. *
We have a great crèche facility available for you
if you require child minding while you work out in
this great health precinct. For only $3.30 a week,
you have unlimited crèche usage for up to two
hours per visit.
The Dolphins Health precinct Café now has cold
press juices that are packed with nutrition and taste
amazing. Try one next time you visit or grab one
on your way home after your workout.
WE have recently cooked up a few sausages for the
development squads and junior teams.
I am continually impressed by these young boys and girls,
who are extremely well mannered and polite to the Old Boys.
I know our members love doing activities like this and the
appreciation shown by the players, officials and the parents
makes it even more enjoyable.
We also had another fantastic night of darts and laughter
with the Redcliffe Darts Club at its home base at the
showgrounds. We pass on an enormous thank-you for their
hospitality and use of their equipment.
We will be having a social evening at the Leagues Club on
festivities please let us know for catering purposes.
A couple of weeks after that we are off to the Caloundra Cup
You just need to be prepared to put up with us old fellows
Graham’s $1000 Birthday
GRAHAM Russell might not be living
on the Peninsula yet but he is still
partaking of the good life.
Graham, membership number 9684, took
home $1000 on April 28 in the monthly
Birthday Card Draw.
“We are in the process of moving to the
Peninsula from Little Mountain on the
Sunshine Coast,” Graham said.
“We went along to the draw on my wife
Betty’s insistence and it went on with no
winner. But I said someone has to win it and it
turned out to be me.”
The Russells, who lived at Scarborough for
seven years from 2000, joined the club again as
meeting place for their family.
“The club was about halfway from where
we were on the Sunshine Coast and the
Brisbane suburbs of the kids,” he said.
“It was halfway for everyone to have a
family meal so worked out really well. I would
like to thank the club for the promotion and the
$1000 has come in very handy.”
Every member of the Dolphins knows the
great benefits your card provides you – most
$10,000 mark reached
ONCE again the members draw has
settled in on $10,000, the magical
mark last claimed on October 29 last
year.
Stephanie Bowers was the winner that night
and another big winner is on the cards this
month, if not sooner.
There are two opportunities each week on
Wednesday and Thursday evenings for club
members to take home the loot.
If the jackpot does not go off, it goes up by
$100, although once it reaches $10,000 it stays
at that amount until won.
There are three draws guaranteed every
Wednesday and Thursday night, whereas
previously the draws would stop if the prize
was won.
Here are the names and membership
numbers from the latest draws:
month – the winner taking up to $5000 cash*.
Plus, all of these monthly tickets go into the
draw to win a brand new Holden Barina or
$10,000 cash at the end of the year.
