OBJECTIVE(S): Students will learn about: the events of colonisation which accelerated inequality and transformed African society<br />
PREPARATION: Familiarise yourself with this lesson by:<br />
1. Read Activity 4 ‘Africa’s Plight’<br />
2. Watch the video about Europeans exploitation of Africa.<br />
3. Watch the video about the Chinese influence on Africa in recent times. Both situations continue inequality.<br />
TIME INSTRUCTION/METHODS MATERIALS<br />
5 minutes Instructor: Settle the class by having an alphabetical seating plan, take the roll,<br />
inform students of classroom standards. Introduce the lesson: In the last few<br />
lessons, we’ve looked at the countries of Africa an overview of poaching. In this<br />
lesson, we look at the colonisation of Africa and its legacy today.<br />
25 minutes Instructor: EUROPEAN COLONISATION<br />
Inform the students that for them to understand the present situation, they need<br />
to look into the past. In the past, globalisation resulted in colonisation of Africa<br />
by Europeans and left a legacy of inequality. PLAY Youtube clip: “A Brief History Of<br />
European Colonisation in Africa” (http://goo.gl/wJcReK) (4.10 minutes).<br />
Instructor: Turn to Activity 4, Africa’s plight. Ask students to read each paragraph of<br />
Africa’s History through to Apatheid. (STOP at the: Asia-African Trade.) Ask students<br />
to answer question 1 - 5.<br />
25 minutes Instructor: ASIA - AFRICAN TRADE<br />
Inform the students that the most recent culture transforming Africa is from<br />
Asia (china). Pick a student to read out the ASIA-AFRICA TRADE paragraph of<br />
Activity 4.<br />
Instructor: PLAY the video 2 Youtube clip ...............................................................<br />
5 minutes Dismissing the class: Settle the students, ask them to pack up, pick up any rubbish<br />
left on the floor and put into the bin, stand behind their desks quietly. Dismiss the<br />
class.<br />
