EXTRA CURRICULAR
1. The Philanthropy Challenge
SCHOOLS: 10 - 20 week challenge for students to earn money for charities via doing home chores, school chores or
social media posts. But, the money being paid is low like a sweatshop worker (eg 10 cents - $5.00 per chore). Money
raised goes to any charity the student wants: local, regional, domestic, international and on any charity cause they want
to help: human, wildlfie and / or the environment. See the IAPF wesbite for further details.
STARTS NOW! Ask your teacher to register!
“What’s impressed me most about The Philanthropy
Challenge is that it’s not just educating students about
the challenges of social inequality, poverty and animal
conservation, it’s encouraging them to experience
something that will stay with them forever... As a former
HSC Geography student I’m inspired that you’re all taking
up the fight against these issues and I encourage every
student to get involved. There truly is strength in numbers.”
- Dr Chris Brown (Bondi Vet)
PHILANTHROPY CHALLENGE
The aim of this challenge is to transform your identity from self focused into an income earning philanthropist
How: Choose a variety of ‘work options’, do them weekly, get paid, deposit pay into school ‘philanthropy’ account,
keep receipts, and at the end of Term 4 decide which charity you want your money to be sent.
2. Slum Survivor simulation
SCHOOLS: 48 hour challenge for students to live on the school grounds like a sweatshop worker in a slum. This simulation
has been inspired by TEAR (see: http://www.tear.org.au/resources/slum-survivor) which created the adult slum survivor
experience. Geography teachers were inspired by TEAR and have developed a school version to enrich geography students
studying globalisation, global inequality and threatened habiats. The students are put through a series of challenges:
- shelter buiding, water carrying, rubbish sorting, health epidemics, poaching, crime, literacy, food shortages and many
more. Teachers wanting an Instructional Manual on the simulation, please feel free to contact the IAPF School Education
facebook page.
