Traditional Teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Implications for Educational Practice<br />
‣ ¾ Recognize <strong>the</strong> traditional teach<strong>in</strong>gs of First Nations students. In particular, <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong><br />
students who are disengaged may benefit from learn<strong>in</strong>g traditional teach<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
‣ ¾ The <strong>in</strong>volvement of Elders, ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> school or via mentorship-type arrangements will likely<br />
be needed to pursue traditional teach<strong>in</strong>g. Look to <strong>the</strong> school’s <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> support worker(s),<br />
<strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> district pr<strong>in</strong>cipal, <strong>and</strong>/or trusted local contacts for guidance <strong>and</strong> help with this.<br />
How do we engage <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>spire <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong><br />
learners? Reflect local <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> ways of<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g expectations of respect,<br />
behaviour, generosity, <strong>and</strong> how we live<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r respectfully.<br />

Make <strong>the</strong> Seven Teach<strong>in</strong>gs a Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(Respect, Trust, Love, Honour, Humility,<br />
Bravery, Truth). They are also sometimes referred<br />
to as <strong>the</strong> Seven Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>rs. Focuss<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />
“Seven Teach<strong>in</strong>gs” helps students self-correct<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir behaviour much faster.<br />

protocol. Even just a little bit of awareness <strong>and</strong> observance<br />
goes a long way. Traditional values as reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
seven teach<strong>in</strong>gs are gifts that are given to us. We need to<br />
encourage students <strong>and</strong> build on strengths …send students<br />
off to reflect on <strong>the</strong>ir behaviour <strong>and</strong> how o<strong>the</strong>rs feel — how<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are impacted by our words <strong>and</strong> actions.<br />
