ADMISSION Admission Who May Attend You may attend MiraCosta College if you are 18 years or older or a high school graduate or equivalent. High school students (sophomore and above) ready for the challenge of college work may also attend MiraCosta College with a permit signed by their parent and high school principal. Here’s how to get started: If you are a… xxContinuing MiraCosta College student who was enrolled in fall 2015: Check for your exact enrollment date on page 11, then go to the course listings to select your classes. xxReturning MiraCosta College student who has not enrolled for two consecutive semesters (fall/spring): First, complete the Application for Admission at miracosta.edu/apply. If you haven’t taken the English or ESL and math assessments or completed the online orientation or advisement, see page 7. xxFirst-time college student: Complete an online Application for Admission. Complete English or ESL and math assessments, orientation and advisement as soon as possible. See pages 6–9 for details. Completing the assessments, orientation and advisement earns you an earlier enrollment date! Students new to MiraCosta College must also develop an education plan. xxStudent new to MiraCosta College with previous college experience: Complete the online Application for Admission at miracosta.edu/apply. If you plan to use course work from another school to meet a prerequisite for a MiraCosta College class, complete the Requisite Review Form, available for download on our website at miracosta.edu/forms. Submit the completed form and a transcript or grade report to the Admissions and Records Office for each prerequisite to be cleared. Even with previous college experience, you still need to complete the assessments (unless you have completed the appropriate mathematics and English prerequisites), orientation and advisement and develop an education plan to earn an earlier enrollment date. xxStudent new to MiraCosta College, taking courses for personal/professional development: If you already have a degree and/or are not planning to earn a degree or certificate at MiraCosta College, complete an online Application for Admission at miracosta.edu/apply. If you plan to take courses requiring prerequisites, you will need to clear the prerequisites. See page 13 for details on prerequisites. APPLYING FOR ADMISSION Complete the online Credit Class Application at: miracosta.edu/apply The online application is available in English and Spanish. Allow 3–5 days for an application to be processed. ADMISSIONS AND RECORDS OFFICE Oceanside Campus Admissions and Records Office Bldg. 3300 HOURS Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. San Elijo Campus Admissions and Records Office Administration Building HOURS Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Note: The Admissions and Records Office closes at 3 p.m. on the 4th and 5th Friday of each month. xxInternational student: International students (F-1 visa) must apply for admission through the International Office, Room 3443 in the Student Center on the Oceanside Campus, 760.795.6897, miracosta.edu/iip. xxCurrent high school sophomore, junior or senior: You may attend MiraCosta College with a Concurrent Enrollment Permit signed by your high school principal and parent. Concurrent Enrollment Permits may be printed from the college website at miracosta.edu/forms. Mail or take your completed permit to the Admissions and Records Office. Permits are required for each semester of college attendance while still enrolled in high school. Matriculation & Testing Services Matriculation: Your Path to College Success! Students who follow the matriculation process have a greater chance of being successful in their academic career and goals compared to students who do not take advantage of these free services. In addition, students who complete the matriculation process will earn a priority enrollment date. The matriculation process includes assessment for English/ESL and math, orientation, advisement and an education plan. Important! x x You must have an Application for Admission on file before you take the assessments unless you are testing for another college. (A fee is charged if testing for another college.) xx Photo ID is required to take the assessment(s) and to pick up assessment scores. xx English/ESL and/or mathematics assessments do not require an appointment. Assessment Students who wish to take ACE/ESL/ENGL 49 or 50 or ENGL 100, and/or MATH 20–150, or any class with a math or English prerequisite, can take an English, ESL and/or math assessment to meet enrollment requirements. Alternatives to the assessments are listed on the following pages. Do Your Best on the Test! Taking your English, ESL and/or math assessment will have a large impact on your education plan. It is important to review and prepare for the assessments. The Testing Services office provides free review material and practice tests online at miracosta.edu/testing for English, ESL and all four levels of the math assessment. The materials are also available in print for reference in the Testing Services offices. Testing Services can also provide alternative review options upon request. When Can I Take the Assessments? Assessments are provided to students on a drop-in basis. No appointment required at the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. xx Oceanside Campus, Room 3334: Drop ins available Monday–Saturday xx San Elijo Campus, Room 101: Drop ins available Monday–Thursday xx Community Learning Center: Available by appointment, call 760.795.8710. Which Assessment Do I Take? English vs. ESL test. You will be asked to select one of the following assessments in order to determine your English or ESL course eligibility (see next column): English Assessment: This assessment measures reading and writing skills of native speakers of English. This is the assessment to take if English is your first (native) language. This includes: A. Students who have grown up in an English-speaking home. B. Students who have been educated in all-English-speaking schools from elementary through high school. ESL Assessment: This assessment measures reading, writing and listening skills of non-native speakers of English. This is the assessment to take if your first (native) language is NOT English. This includes: A. Students who have grown up in a home in which English was NOT the primary (main) language. B. Students enrolled in the International Student Program (IIP), or students who have completed noncredit ESL (continuing education) or English Language Development (ELD) classes in high school. The English Assessment and ESL Assessment are not timed.
