years of illuminating downtown Riverside and lifting the
spirits of residents and visitors during the holiday season.
The Festival offers five weeks of merriment in Downtown Riverside, November
27 – January 2. As the largest holiday celebration in the region,
the Festival of Lights has become a holiday tradition for families, visitors
and groups alike. Celebrate the season with family activities that include Inland
Southern California’s first outdoor ice skating rink, holiday-themed vendors,
endless hours of family-friendly live entertainment, unique shopping and creative
dining along Main Street Riverside, and, of course, Santa Claus.
With the flip of a switch, Riverside’s downtown will instantly illuminate
with more than three and a half million twinkling lights
and spectacular fireworks during the magical November
27 th “Switch-On Ceremony” hosted by The Mission Inn
While strolling around downtown, festival-goers
can grab a cup of hot cocoa and warm sugared donuts,
purchase one-of-a-kind presents or dine at a unique
restaurant.
Added to the line-up again this year will be several
local artists out on Main Street with demonstrations
of their artwork and opportunities to purchase a truly
unique gift. The incorporation of these local artists is
something that has made Riversiders very
proud. Also added is the New Year’s Eve
celebration at the downtown Library Plaza
from 6-9pm.
The Riverside Festival of Lights allows
everyone - no matter what age - to be charged
with wonder and anticipation of the magic of
‘Hope Comes Alive’ With
Lonestar
CBU Christmas Concert
There’s music in the air. That’s something that
generally happens around Christmas time in
most places; however, it’s a little different at
California Baptist University.
The University Choir and Orchestra (UCO),
directed by Dr. Judd Bonner, is hard at work
preparing for their 10th annual Christmas concert
titled Hope Comes Alive and their approach
to the standard canon of Christmas music is
different than you’ll hear on the radio. The message
of Christmas rings louder and pierces hearts
in a way like no other when presented by 150
college-aged students who passionately believe
every word they sing.
UCO, as they are fondly referred to, performs
regularly – roughly 60 concerts throughout the
year – both locally and across the country, and
in every venue in which they perform, their goal
SINGING THEIR PASSION The California
Baptist University Choir and Orchestra includes 150
student voices.
is the same – to inspire and engage the audience
with overwhelming energy, vibrant passion, and
musical excellence.
This special evening of Christmas music is sure
to do just that for you and your family, so mark
your calendars for December 12, at 6pm, and prepare
to be filled with the true spirit of Christmas!
The UCO Christmas Concert takes place
at Harvest Christian Fellowship, 6115 Arlington
Ave., in Riverside. Tickets are $20; call
the School of Music to reserve your seat, at
Soul Band Offers Free Music
Workshop For Kids
Local grammy-winning musician partners
with Fox Riverside Theater Foundation to
offer a FREE workshop for local students
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.
Grammy Award
winner Gabriel
Roth was raised
in Riverside, and has
returned to his hometown,
after nearly two
decades in New York,
to raise his family. Roth
is concerned about the
financial limitations of
arts education in the
schools and wants to
encourage others in the
music and recording
industries to join him in
offering educational enrichment to students of all ages.
He and his fellow band members, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings,
will perform at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium (RMA) on November
6 and will present a 90-minute music workshop at 3:30pm that
afternoon, prior to the show. The workshop is free, and the tour is also
offering 300 tickets to the evening show at a greatly-reduced rate of $15,
an offer that is limited to workshop participants and their parents.
Roth is aware that some kids won’t know the band, so he is happy to
talk about other musicians with whom the band has worked and even
-- with some reluctance and humility -- his Grammy awards.
“Some kids may not know us yet,” said Roth, “but they know names
like Jay-Z and Amy Winehouse, and they know what a Grammy statuette
looks like.”
The Fox Riverside Theater Foundation has accepted the role of outreach
coordinator for the event, and aims to bring in kids, 2nd – 12th
grade, from all over the region. The Foundation works with a network
of schools and non-profit organizations to distribute outreach tickets
through its Students at Broadway program, which provides tickets for
youth to attend shows during the Fox Performing Arts Center’s Broadway
season. The Foundation staff and board members are excited to
partner with the band.
“This program is an example of our outreach mission,” said Executive
Director Cynthia Wright. “For some of these students, it is the first
opportunity to get up close and personal with specific musical instruments;
for others, it is an opportunity to add fuel to the fire of their
passion for music and to hear advice from successful professionals.”
fans join Jamie and Adam onstage to assist in
their mind-blowing and mind-twisting approaches
to science. MythBusters Jamie & Adam
UNLEASHED! brings you face-to-face with the
curious world of Jamie and Adam as the duo
matches wits on stage with each other and members
of the audience.
Jamie Hyneman has announced that he will
end touring with the live show this year.
Since 2012, Jamie and Adam have toured
North America, Australia and New Zealand
with their live show. To date, they have performed
in 108 cities, given 119 performances,
over 200,000 people have seen them onstage
and the tour has grossed over $12 million. This
fall, the tour will perform 31 dates across the US
and Canada.
One of the most highly regarded and
watched series on the Discovery Channel,
MythBusters is now in its thirteenth season.
Co-hosted by Hyneman and Savage, the show
mixes scientific method with gleeful curiosity
and plain old-fashioned ingenuity to create its
own signature style of explosive experimentation
– and the supporting or de-bunking of urban
myths that we live with day to day.
Jamie Hyneman is the owner of M5
Industries, an effects company specializing in
problematic custom builds. Besides serving as
headquarters of MythBusters, M5 continues
Theater & Arts
to work on various research and development
projects for private clients. After trying his hand
at careers as various as librarian at the United
Nations in Geneva to running a diving and sailing
charter business in the Caribbean, Hyneman
began his career in show business as special effects
shop assistant in New York and later in San
Francisco as a crew member on films including
Robocop, Arachnophobia and Naked Lunch.
While managing Colossal Pictures’ model
shop in San Francisco, Hyneman was given the
opportunity to take over – and M5 Industries
was born. Hyneman graduated from Indiana
University with a degree in Russian. He has
received an honorary engineering degree from
the University of Maine as well as an honorary
doctorate of engineering from Villanova
University, with whom he has an ongoing
collaborative relationship to help develop new
safety concepts for the military. He is the holder
of several patents and the winner of numerous
industry awards.
Adam Savage received a call from Jamie
Hyneman in 2002 to participate in a demo for a
TV show, which turned into the wildly popular
Discovery Channel & SBS series MythBusters.
Savage immersed himself in the NYC arts scene
before moving to San Francisco in 1990 to
parlay his skills into the thriving theater scene.
There he worked for dozens of companies as set
designer, prop master, art director and producer
before falling into the machine art community
where he learned welding, pneumatics, hydraulics,
electronics, and robot-building.
After exhibiting his work in over 50 art
shows nationwide, Savage caught the eye of the
special effects industry and began working as
a prop builder and art director for major commercials
for Sega, Coca-Cola, Nike, Burger King
and Chevrolet. His work on a Coca-Cola commercial
earned him a Clio Award nomination.
After a 18-month stint as head of research &
development for startup toy company ZOOB,
Savage joined George Lucas’ Industrial Light
and Magic. IER
RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY PLAYERS PRESENTS
One Moment Changes Everything In
Riverside Community Players’ Almost Maine
Riverside Community Players presents the
second show in their 91 st season with the
touching and charming play Almost Maine
by John Cariani, directed by Kathryn Gage.
It is January in northern Maine where the
average temperature is 9 degrees Fahrenheit and
the average winter snowfall is 115 inches. While
the town of Almost is a mythical composite of
several northern Maine towns, the plights of
its residents are very real. Several of them are
about to experience a big epiphany, something
that really only comes when people actually
listen to and hear each other.
During one night in Almost, Maine, nine
magical moments are about to happen. They
will happen simultaneously at nine o’clock under
the big sky illuminated by the amazing spectacle
of the aurora borealis. As the playwright
himself describes it – “This play is all about one
moment in time – what happens to people in a
heartbeat. It is a play about real people who are
really, truly, honestly dealing with the toughest
thing there is to deal with in life: love.”
Show dates and times are: Nov. 13, 14, 19,
20, 21, 27, 28, 2015 at 8pm and Nov. 15, 22,
of hope and joy. Not a Humbug in sight.
This holiday season Riverside Community
Players make their annual pilgrimage to
Victorian England as they present the classic tale
of Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol written
by Charles Dickens and directed by Michael
Charles.
This enduring story of transformation and
redemption unfolds on Christmas Eve. Mr.
Scrooge, a miserly and seemingly unfeeling sort
of fellow, receives a visit from his dead partner,
Jacob Marley. Mr. Marley tells Ebenezer that
he will be visited by three spirits. These ghosts
of Christmas past, present and what is yet to be
hold the key to Ebenezer’s future.
A Christmas Carol runs from Dec. 11 to Dec.
20. Evening performances are the 11 th , 12 th , 18 th
and 19 th , at 7pm. Matinees are the 12 th , 13 th ,
plans for the 2015 Christmas Jubilee Tour.
The Jubilee Tour features three of Southern Gospel
Music’s most recognized artists, The Booth
Brothers, Greater Vision, and Legacy Five.
The 2015 Christmas Jubilee Tour will begin
November 30 and feature 15 concerts. It has
been two years since the Jubilee Christmas Tour
made stops along the West Coast, and this year
the event will return to Idaho, Washington,
Oregon and California, including a stop on
Monday, December 14 at Immanuel Baptist
What began as a light-hearted lunch conversation
between three friends has become one
of the most popular concert tours in Gospel
Music. Managed and promoted exclusively by
IMC Management, The Jubilee Tour brings three
of the most popular names in Southern Gospel
Music together for a unique and unforgettable
concert experience. The event has proven to be
very popular in cities across North America,
with sell-out concert attendance in numerous
cities in recent years.
The evening allows each group to be featured
during the first half of the program, then the
second half brings the three groups together for a
Jubilee spectacular filled with Christmas classics.
The unscripted and spontaneous format is both
entertaining and inspirational, providing audiences
with a most enjoyable, must-see evening.
The Jubilee Christmas Tour concert features
material from the multiple Christmas Jubilee
the Holiday season. Since that first year in
2012 when the Tour first kicked off, The Booth
Brothers, Greater Vision, and Legacy Five have
been uniting to bring Christmas cheer to Gospel
music lovers throughout North America. This
year promises to bring more Holiday cheer.
NOVEMBER AT
The Cave rocks the Village in Big Bear with a November
lineup that includes Zeppelin USA, Christmas With The
Nelsons, Desperado: The Premiere Eagles Tribute, and
The Winter Kick Off Party, with Orgy in early December.
The Cave is a 400-seat concert venue, located in the heart of Big Bear Village
in the San Bernardino Mountains. Established in 2013, The Cave has hosted
musical acts that included: Colt Ford, Berlin, Marshall Tucker Band, Bill
Medley, and Iration. The Cave books nostalgic entertainers of the 20th century
and some of today’s most up-and-coming rock, pop, and country performers.
Comedy shows and other live entertainment are all part of the lineup at The
Cave, which features a full bar and state-of-the-art audio and visuals. Shows
are for all ages, unless otherwise indicated.
The Cave is located at 40789 Village Dr. in Big Bear Lake. For more
information, go online to www.thecavebigbear.com or call (909) 878-0204.
Zeppelin USA November 7
Zeppelin USA is all about
the music and spirit of Led
Zeppelin. They focus on
getting the right tones, vocal
inflections, the mix out
front, borrowing a little from
the studio versions here, the
live versions there…much
attention is spent on delivering
a true sonic Zep experience. The members of ZUSA are veteran
musicians who’ve performed for tens of thousands of people. A Zeppelin
USA show captures the sound and spirit of the greatest rock band of all
time, and promises to either introduce or remind fans of just how great
the mighty Zep will always be.
IN BIG BEAR
Christmas With The Nelsons
November 21
Christmas With The Nelsons
tells the story of three family
Christmases in the lives of
America’s Favorite Family-
The Nelsons. This heartwarming
multi-media live
concert experience stars the
third generation of #1 Nelson
Family hitmakers, Matthew
and Gunnar Nelson.
A genuine blend of Everly
Brothers-style harmonies
and Smothers Brothers-style
comedy, multi-platinum recording
artists Matthew and
Gunnar have been thrilling
sellout audiences world-wide
for the past decade with their
high-integrity Ricky Nelson Remembered show… and they’ve got a new
gift for you to open. Not merely a rock concert with a few holiday songs
thrown in… Christmas With The Nelsons delivers Christmas Classics
the Nelson Family way. Interweaving quick humor, soaring sibling
vocals, and state of the art big screen video, Matthew and Gunnar’s
completely new show will take you on a sleigh ride through time. From
the Holly Jolly 50’s when their father Ricky was a little boy intent on
duct-taping antlers on the family cat… …to the 70’s when Santa Claus
Came To Town delivering Schwinns for the Twins in the era before bike
helmets (THAT explains a lot) to Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree
today with the newest generation of Nelson Family kids who prove that
yes we DID in fact turn out to be just like our parents after all.
Desperado: The Premiere
Eagles Tribute November 27
Desperado’s line up is powerful
and entertaining, and promises
to be the finest Eagles experience
to be had, outside of an
actual Eagles concert. With their
exciting stage and visual presence,
world class guitar work,
rock solid rhythm section, and
dynamic vocal work, Desperado
satisfies their audiences with a Big Stage quality experience. As you
experience this band performing, you realize that you are in the presence
of a group of extremely accomplished and well seasoned.
Orgy December 5
Orgy emerged in the
Goth music scene in
1998 with their incredible
remake of “Blue
Monday.” The track sold
over 1 million copies
and built a worldwide
audience for the brand.
In late 2005 the band
went on a hiatus to work
on side projects. In 2011, after seven years of demand from fans for new
music and a tour, founding member Jay Gordon (vocals) decided it was
time to kick things back up and begin recording and touring again in
support of Orgy’s fans.
Comedic Classic ‘Tartuffe’ Opens At CSUSB Nov. 13
A Provocative Take On A Comedic Classic
Cal State San Bernardino’s Theatre Arts Department in November
will kick off its 50 th Anniversary main stage season with a wickedly
powerful and provocative take on an old tale, Tartuffe, by Molière.
This comedic classic from 1664 was the center of great controversy and
censorship upon its release, and has now been masterfully adapted by David
Ball, making it just as relevant and poignant as the day it first debuted.
Tickets Now Online For
Calimesa Christmas Concert
Internet ticket sales for the
annual Christmas Concert
sponsored by Calimesa Community
Concerts are underway.
The Gary Bonner Singers and
Orchestra will be featured in three
concerts on Dec. 18 and 19 at the
Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist
Church.
The concert, titled Bethlehem
Skies, is a return engagement for
the musicians. Dr. Bob Soderblom,
founding director of the
Calimesa concerts, notes the
Bonner groups have previously
made several sold-out appearances
in Calimesa.
The concert series is currently
in its 30 th season. Its annual
Christmas concert is known as the
Candlelight Festival of Music and
Lights.
As before, this year’s concert
will be directed by Dr. Gary Bonner,
internationally recognized
as a musician and a leader in
advancing Christian choral music
performance. He was the founding
dean of the schools of music at
Azusa Pacific University and later
at California Baptist University,
where he was honored as the university’s
outstanding professor. He
retired from CBU in 2012.
Bonner launched the Gary
Bonner Singers in
1995. Acclaimed for
their musical versatility,
sparkling performance,
and “warm, vibrant
choral tone,” they have completed
21 recordings. The 60-voice
ensemble’s most recent recording,
Legacy Christmas in Concert, is
the live recording of their 2013
Christmas concert. A full orchestra
will accompany the singers in all
three Calimesa performances.
This year’s Calimesa concerts
are at 6pm Friday, Dec.18, and on
Dec. 19 at 4pm and 6pm. Tickets
are $15, $10, $8, and $5. Tickets
can be ordered online from
iTickets.com or by phone at (800)
965-9324.
No tickets will be sold at the
door, and pre-ordered tickets are
nonrefundable.
All three concerts are at the
Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist
Church, 391 Myrtlewood Dr. (4 th
and Myrtlewood) in Calimesa.
The church is chosen to host the
community concert each Christmas
partly because of its long
tradition of beautiful lighting and
decoration to honor the religious
holiday, Soderblom said.
“Early ticket orders have the
best choice of seating for all three
concerts,” he adds.
A dedicated telephone line
provides recorded information
and directions for the concert at
(909) 795-4960. IER
Tartuffe last graced the CSUSB stage in 1990 when then-department
chair Ron Barnes, for whom the theatre was named, directed the classic.
Barnes was a founding faculty member when the college opened in 1965
and founded the theatre arts department 43 years ago in 1972.
It’s the late 1960s, and Orgon, a wealthy family man, has taken in a
stranger by the name of Tartuffe. Tartuffe appears to be an extremely pious
and devout man of religion, and Orgon regards him almost as a saint. Offering
the stranger his best food and drink, Orgon places the needs of his
guest above those of his wife and children, who believe Tartuffe is nothing
more than a con man who pretends to be of the highest moral authority,
but does not practice what he preaches.
Brimming with music, costumes, props and scenery from the 1960s,
this unique take on Tartuffe will be directed by theatre department chair
Terry Donovan Smith. Tartuffe opens Nov. 13-22, with eight performances
at 8pm each night and 2pm matinee performances on Nov. 15, 21
and 22.
The show will then move to the Palm Desert Campus for three additional
performances the weekend of Dec. 5.
Individual and season tickets may be purchased from the CSUSB Theatre
Arts Box Office by phone at (909) 537-5884, or online at theatre.csusb.
edu. Tickets are $6 for students and children under 17; $12 for faculty,
staff, senior citizens and military; $15 for adults. Performances take place
in the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre on the CSUSB campus. Parking at
CSUSB is $6 Monday-Friday and $3 on the weekend. IER
and will soon learn that Jacob has plans for Scrooge to receive three more visitors
this very evening - visitors who will transform his life.
CATS Presents Original Adaptation
Of ‘A Christmas Carol’
The Community Arts Theater Society of Big
Bear Valley (CATS) presents its original
stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol,
opening Friday, Nov. 13 at the Big Bear Lake
Performing Arts Center. The show plays a total
of 11 performances with 7:30pm shows on Nov.
13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 24, 27 and 28 and 1:30pm
matinees on Nov. 15, 22 and 29.
All performances are reserved seating and
prices range from $17 to $29 for Adults,
$16 to $27 for Seniors and $11 to $20 for
Students/ Children, depending on date and
location of seats.
Tickets are now on sale through the
CATS website at www.bigbeartheater.org or
at the PAC Box office at 909-866-4970.
This new adaptation of the Charles
Dickens classic was specially adapted for
CATS by its director, Karen Sargent Rachels,
and was originally presented in 2009.
Rachels was inspired by a chance remark
from an Antiques Roadshow appraiser of a
letter written by Charles Dickens, telling a
member of Royalty that he, himself, was unable
to procure tickets to one of his sold-out concert
readings for her. The Roadshow appraiser
mentioned that tickets to a Dickens reading was
like trying to get tickets to a Bruce Springsteen
concert today.
Further research indicated that Dickens
made two trips to America, also doing a series of
concert readings of his works. From this premise,
this CATS adaptation of A Christmas Carol,
The CATS adaptation features
a real-life encounter of
Dickens and a young Mark
Twain as well as other twists
on this old classic.
featuring the on-stage character of Charles
Dickens, was born.
The CATS adaptation also features a real-life
encounter of Dickens and a young Mark Twain
in 1868 at Steinway Hall in New York.
Because of Dickens’ on-stage narration,
much of his original book-narrative is retained
in this version, and is brought to life on the
PAC revolving stage by a cast of over 60 actors
of all ages. It promises to be a special delight to
tried-and-true Dickens fans.
Another CATS innovation for this stage production
is the involvement of the Clock Sprites,
a group of mischievous sprites who live in The
Clock and help the spirits redeem Mr. Scrooge.
CATS is well known for the quality of its
productions and will feature original sets designed
by Joanne McMaster and re-built by Bob
Perry and his crew. Karen Sargent Rachels is
Director-Producer, with Karen Bergmann as
Associate Producer. Costumes are designed
by Priscilla Anderson with Lighting Design
by Joanne McMaster and Melinda Garcia.
Garcia is also Assistant To The Producer and
Adam McDonald is Production Coordinator.
This CATS production of A Christmas
Carol is “back by popular demand,” after
an overwhelming reaction to its production
four years ago. This year Robin Field,
who played Scrooge for CATS in the last
production, will star as Dickens. Director
Rachels says: “We realized that the timeless
and inspiring story of A Christmas Carol could
be presented traditionally every few years or
so. This original play with music is faithful to
Dickens, and we wanted to make sure the show
would hold some surprises for our repeat patrons
and newcomers as well. It is a very special
play with music, filled with holiday magic for
the whole family. I think this original adaptation
and new production will bring its own special
magic to our holiday season this year.” IER
Festival patrons,” says Bechtold. “Sometimes they even send me pictures of how
my pieces look in their homes.” Katie Knight of “Unique Bottle Candles” gets
creative with repurposed bottles, hand cut bottles and wind chimes.
The celebration includes a creative oasis for the young at heart where Macaroni
Kid presents free interactive “make ‘n’ take” crafts and Home Depot of
Chino hosts personalized instruction and assembly of pint-sized toolboxes kids
can keep as a free memento. Parents will also appreciate the free digital fingerprint
Child ID services courtesy of New York Life. Priceless Pets will have a host of four
legged friends available outside for adoption.
Stage Entertainment
Captivating audiences with dynamic renditions of music
for all ages, “HyJinx” takes to the main stage with a range
of melodies from R&B to swing, Motown, classic rock
and current hits. Captain Jack Spareribs (a spoof to the notorious
Pirates of the Caribbean films) performs his zany pirate
show that blends comedy with magic, juggling, and illusions.
Strolling performers “Stilt Santa” and “Mama Claus & Eddie
the Elf” add to the holiday cheer.
Cahuilla Casino Kicks Off The Holidays With Big Giveaways
Cahuilla Casino is starting off the holiday
season with slot tournaments, wheel spin
giveaways, and the big cash payouts. The
fun starts on Veteran’s Day with the $10,000
Stars and Stripes Slot Tournament, where
players face off in open sessions every Wednesday
and Friday, Nov. 11 through Nov. 27.
Players who show military or veteran’s ID will
be honored with a commemorative pin and one
free play in the slot tournament.
Players can spin the Summer-in-Winter
prize wheel Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 7-22,
Cahuilla Casino at
Mountain Sky Travel Center
52702 Highway 371, Anza
HOURS: Open 24 hours, 365 days a
year for players 21 and older.
MORE INFORMATION: (951) 763-1200
WEBSITE: cahuillacasino.com
for a shot at the progressive jackpot and other
prizes.
Black Friday shoppers can take a break from
the mall chaos and head up the mountain for
Cahuilla’s popular Black Friday Giveaway on
Nov. 27, with cash and prize giveaways all afternoon.
Prizes this year include an Apple watch,
GoPro Hero, XBOX gaming system or iPad,
plus cash, slot play, and other prizes.
Just next door, construction is wrapping up
on Mountain Sky Travel Center, the property’s
new 24-hour convenience store and gas station.
Day trippers will soon be able to fuel up, pick
up tasty carry-out pizza and fried chicken,
and shop at the convenience market. Cahuilla
Smoke Shop also moves into Mountain Sky
Travel Center and continues to carry a large selection
of native tobacco products at low prices.
This year Cahuilla Casino celebrated its 19 th
anniversary and is known for its small size, laid
back atmosphere, and extremely friendly staff.
As opposed to bigger casino properties, players
come to Cahuilla because it is an easy casino to
navigate with convenient parking, a wide variety
of slot machines, and it’s a place where staff and
players alike know your name and greet you
with a smile.
For non-gamers looking for a mountain stop
for great food and drinks, Roadrunner’s Bar &
Grill serves all-American fare seven days a week
and is best known for generous portions and
great burgers. During football season, the bar
serves 50 cent wings on Thursdays, Sundays and
Mondays during the game. The restaurant also
serves dinner specials on Saturday nights plus
brunch every weekend. IER
Moving Again
This old Volvo keeps packing up
them miles. I never thought I’d miss
Minnesota’s rolling hills. All I see is
cornfield and highway. The land flattens.
More corn. Forever cornfields. Then
desert. I park on the side of the road to
sleep as the trucks rumble by. A highway
patrol stops. “Just resting. I’ll be on my
way now.” Morning rises behind me
as the mountains rise in front of me.
