The Artists 20 Brent Krysa* Director Early in his career, Brent Krysa’s production of Sondheim’s Assassins garnered a spot in the Montreal Gazette’s ‘Top Ten Productions’ of the year, and his other productions A Little Night Music and Company were likewise hailed. Recent and upcoming projects across Canada include Mozart’s Le Nozze Di Figaro for Calgary Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria; Postcard from Morocco for the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School in Toronto; The Merry Widow for Edmonton Opera; and Il Barbiere Di Siviglia for Saskatoon Opera. Other credits include McGill University, Queen of Puddings, the Lugo Festival in Italy, and the Canadian Opera Company. Tadeusz Biernacki Conductor This is Mr. Biernacki’s 33rd season with Manitoba Opera as Assistant Music Director, Chorus Master, and Rehearsal Pianist. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Mr. Biernacki has performed internationally as a piano soloist and has conducted orchestras across Canada and the U.S., as well as in Tessaloniki, Kaohsiung, and Hong Kong. Mr. Biernacki has also written orchestral arrangements for TSO, WSO, SSO, RWB, NAC Orchestra, Pittsburgh Ballet, Memphis Ballet and others. His most recent work as a conductor with Manitoba Opera includes Così fan tutte, Candide,The Daughter of the Regiment, The Barber of Seville, and The Magic Flute. He has conducted numerous productions for Saskatoon Opera including Die Fledermaus, L’Elisir d’Amore, Don Giovanni, Carmen, La Traviata, La Bohème, Rigoletto, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Pasquale, as well as concert versions of Hamlet and Mignon for Opera Lyra Ottawa. Listed in order of Vocal Appearance * Manitoba Opera debut Gordon Bintner* Figaro Grand Prize winner of the OSM Standard Life Competition (2011) and First Prize and People’s Choice Award recipient at the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio Competition (2012), Canadian bass-baritone Gordon Bintner has appeared internationally in a wide range of concert and operatic repertoire. Recent engagements include Guglielmo in Così fan tutte (Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra), Basilio in Der Barbier von Sevilla (Salzburger Festspiele - YSP), Handel’s Messiah (New Jersey Symphony Orchestra), and Junior in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place (Montreal Symphony Orchestra). Upcoming engagements include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (OSM), Il Conte in Le Nozze di Figaro (COC Ensemble), Araldo in Otello (Osterfestspiele Salzburg), and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte (Michigan Opera Theatre). Andriana Chuchman Susanna Winnipeg-born soprano Andriana Chuchman’s current season includes debuts at the Los Angeles Opera as Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, opposite Placido Domingo, and the Dallas Opera as Magnolia in Show Boat. She sings Handel’s Messiah with the Cincinnati and Edmonton Symphonies, Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Grand Rapids and Winnipeg Symphonies, and appears in recital in Toronto. Ms. Chuchman made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, and has since returned as Valencienne (The Merry Widow), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), and Miranda (The Enchanted Island). Other recent operatic engagements include Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Magnolia (Show Boat) at the Washington National Opera, Olympia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) at the Canadian Opera Company, and as Gretel on the Glyndebourne Opera Tour in the U.K. Future seasons will see her debuting at the Houston Grand Opera, and making returns to the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Washington National Opera, among others.
The Artists Peter McGillivray Dr. Bartolo Saskatchewan baritone Peter McGillivray was grand prize winner of the CBC Young Performers Competition. Upcoming performances include Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia for Pacific Opera Victoria, Tapestry Opera’s premiere of Gareth Willams’ Rocking Horse Winner, and Heggie’s Moby Dick with Dallas Opera. Among his recent credits are Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Toronto Summer Music), Father Palmer in Silent Night (Calgary Opera), and Bartolo in both Le Nozze di Figaro and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Opera Lyra Ottawa). He has also worked with the opera companies of Vancouver, Edmonton, Quebec and the Canadian Opera Company. He last performed with Manitoba Opera as Schaunard in the 2014 production of La Bohème. Donnalynn Grills Marcellina Winnipeg mezzo Donnalynn Grills embraces a wide range of musical styles and has performed as a guest artist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Rainbow Stage, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Dry Cold Productions, the Little Opera Company, The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, and Groundswell. Previous appearances with Manitoba Opera include Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Alisa (Lucia di Lammermoor), Hanna’s mother (Jason & Hanna), Annina (La Traviata), and Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro, 2006). Alicia Woynarski* Cherubino Alicia Woynarski’s warm voice and compelling stage presence have captivated audiences nationally and abroad. She has appeared most recently with Calgary Concert Opera as Dorabella in Così fan tutte. (Hansel and Gretel), Carmen and Mercedes (Carmen), and Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro) with companies including Saskatoon Opera, Little Opera on the Prairie, and Vancouver Island Opera. In Europe she has sung the roles of Dorabella, Berta, and Dritte Dame. Ms. Woynarski has performed with the Vancouver, Regina and Saskatoon Symphony Orchestras, the Northern Czech Philharmonic, and Mercury Opera, Edmonton. Daniel Okulitch Count Almaviva Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch has performed for some of the most prestigious opera companies and orchestras throughout Europe and North America. These include Le Châtelet, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Colon, Dallas, Washington, and Los Angeles. Most recently he debuted as Lieutenant Horstmayer in Kevin Putt’s Silent Night with l’Opéra de Montréal, the role of Herman Broder in the world premiere of Enemies, A Love Story with Palm Beach Opera, the role of Ennis Del Mar in the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain at Madrid’s Teatro Real, the four villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Edmonton Opera, and Creonte in Medea in Geneva. He also joined the cast of the Metropolitan Opera for Don Giovanni and returned to Santa Fe Opera for the count in Le Nozze di Figaro. Mr. Okulitch last performed with Manitoba Opera as Schaunard in the 2005 production of La Bohème. David Menzies* Curzio/Basilio From Shoal Lake, Manitoba, tenor David Menzies has been praised as a “powerhouse performer” in performances of music from the baroque to contemporary. This season, Mr. Menzies performs Almaviva (Brott Opera); Judith (Pax Christi); Tacmas - Les fleurs, Belmonte - Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Co. Baroque Mont-Royal); Handel - Chandos Anthems (Sherbrooke University), and B minor mass (Ensemble Caprice).
