Hubert Randall died; born in Jefferson Co., and though 58 years old, had nev<br />

been out of the State. Survived by wife, Henrietta, 2 daughters, Mrs Julia<br />

Brockway and Mrs Edith Tramutala, mother, Laura E. Randall and sister,<br />

Alice Robinson.<br />

The Degree and Drill Team of Enterprise Grange won $100 in cash prizes<br />

Mrs Sam Mannough dies, born in Harison, N„ Y. , and educated in N. Y.<br />

where she was a teacher. Later studied nursing and was a graduate of the<br />

John Hopkins' nurses training School in Brooklyn. Moved to Stockton, Ks in<br />

1910, and married Sam Manaugh. Moved to Arvada later.<br />

New ambulance service for Arvada, thanks to Arvada Post of Amerigan<br />

Legion and several other members of the community. No charge for the service.<br />

Mary Bacher died, 68 years old. Moved to Arvada in 1898. Husband,<br />

Ignatz, died in 1918. Lived on College Ave for 32 years. Children were<br />

Mary & Lena Bacher of Arvada, Anne Olson of Cherow, Joseph, Ignatz, Albert<br />

and John of Wheatridge. One daughter, Elizabeth Sedlamayer died in 1924.<br />

(Mrs Bacher was still living in Welchester.<br />

W. G. Boyd, father of Ray J. Boyd, died. He wasn't from Arvada, but<br />

was a pioneer settler in the Big Thompson Canyon - 1873. His father and an<br />

uncle created Boyd Lakes near Loveland. In 1879, he trailed cattle from<br />

Wyoming and Montana to New Mexico during a drouth. For a number of years,<br />

he was editor of papers in Grand Junction & Loveland. (Interesting - huh,<br />

Marcettal)<br />

March 23<br />

Town of Arvada purchased a new street sweeper for the paved streets of<br />

town. "There have been many hours of service trying to get the machine to<br />

do its stuff." Mounted on front of one of the trucks.<br />

Arvada horseshoe courts will open April 2 at Mcllvoy Park. E. J. Molby,<br />

president of the local club.<br />

Pat's tire shop moved to 145 Wadsworth. No new innovations - "too derned<br />

busy taking care of customers."<br />

Arvada s-'ommunity Organization Committee met, 8 present. Secretary to<br />

write letter to Town Board asking that traffic laws be enforced and that entrances<br />

leading into Arvada be improved. Also write a letter to The Monitor<br />

opposing the weekly nuisance of papers being thrown into front yards. Loudspeakers<br />

at ball park are too loud and the news boys on the tennis courts on<br />

Sunday mornings is also disturbing.<br />

Farmers Feed & Supply are going to move into the building recently vacated<br />

by Regier Feed & Supply at 125 Wadsworth.<br />

and Ocalyte. Duties are to daily recite Divine Office to keep the vow of celibacy<br />

for life. In the fall, he will receive Deaconship, and in June of nest year,<br />

New Safeway store opened - "What intrigues me most is those push cart<br />

baskets. I imagine boys working there are supposed to wheel you around -<br />

wouldn't you? The new store is a darby; it has everything in refrigerated<br />

cases and all that stort of stuff." Bill Shepherd is new manager. "It looks<br />

to me like our Safeway has tackled a big problem courageously, and if they<br />

can't make it, won't that be a swell basketball court?"<br />

People on 4th St discussed with Town Board how to extend the sewer<br />

and Bruce Evans named to fill occupancy of O'Connell.<br />

Arvada business men arranged Hallowe'en Fun for the town's children, a<br />

Fred Tiller died November 7th. Moved to Arvada in 1914. Born in Red-<br />

ruth, England, Central City in 1898 and married Sarah Stephens in C.C. in<br />

1901. Established Tiller Coal Ed Feed business. Interment, Arvada Cemetery.<br />

Robert Mellor of Avalon Station was struck on the head by a and<br />

killed in a mine at Central City .<br />

Beet dump had a very successful season. George Swadley shipped the<br />

greatest amount of beets and E„ E. Sleyster shipped the beets with the highest<br />

sugar content, averaged 21.7% sugar. 313 acres of beets were harvested in<br />

the Arvada community. Joe Connor was supervisor of the dump which opened<br />

October 9.<br />

Arvada Community Organization Committee met and proposed a special<br />

meeting for Monday, November 20th, for purpose of making preliminary plans<br />

for the proposed Community House.<br />

Big plans for $50,000 Community House - hoping WPA funds would cover<br />

library would move in. Kitchen and room for athletic events.<br />

Fanny Roberts, mother of Percy, died. Born in Cornwall, England and<br />

came to Arvada in 1906. Hit by a car, died of a bloodclot.<br />

Town sent out questionnaire with water bill regarding whether people favored<br />

a uniformed cop for stricter traffic enforcement. Would raise mill levy. $1,900<br />

a year salary.<br />

Electric Company moved to new location on Wadsworth to a building designed by<br />

Newt Olson Lumber.<br />

December 7<br />

About 1,000 people attended the grand opening of the Arvada Electric Co.'s<br />

new office.<br />

December 14<br />

Mollvoy Park sought as site for community building. Beginning this year, the<br />

Iannual Xmas event will be &eld at the park instead of at the corner of Grand View<br />

and Wadsworth. The Arvada Garden Club will sponsor a planting in Mcllvoy<br />

of a blue spruce to be used as a permanent Christmas tree for the Arvada Community.<br />

Tree was donated by Tollesson Nurseries and will be moved by<br />

Charles Wilmore of the Green Bower Nursery.

Fire Dept warned motorists who follow the trucks to a fire not to drive<br />

too closely because sometimes the trucks stop suddenly and the tailgaters crash<br />

into them.<br />

John J. Weaver died. Settled in Arvada 50 years ago, 1889. Born in<br />

La Bette County near Burlingame, Ks, in 1868. Survived by wife, Anna;<br />

daughter, Hattie Beub and son, Thomas. Buried Arvada Cemetery.<br />

December 21<br />

Agnes Schoech (Mrs Joseph) died. Resident of Arvada since 1906. Survived<br />

by 2 daughters, Mrs Coralin Zehender and Mrs Glen Shaklee.<br />

E. M. Harris moved to Arvada from Nebraska 27 years ago, 1912, and<br />

was engaged in raising livestock on a farm in the Ralston Community until he<br />

moved to 332 W. Grand View a few years ago.<br />

overhead footbridge across the r.r. tracks be retained.<br />

year of his service. He started practice of medicine in June 1890, and has<br />

been in Arvada since 1908.<br />

Blizzard hits Arvada area. Much damage to phone and power lines.<br />

The County Commissioners bought steel to build a new bridge over ditch<br />

near Ralston Church. The bridge will be straightened from its former angle<br />

and will be 26 feet, 8 inches by 30 feet, a single span and will cost $596.<br />

Monety is to come from Arvada's 3% gas tax.<br />

March 21<br />

Not so (re new bridge) says Commissioner James G. Biggins, Jr. All<br />

of Arvada's gas tax money went to correct the reverse curve on the paved<br />

road to Denver.<br />

80 years and resulted in irreparable damage to farms and ditches along its<br />

cou rse .<br />

Hi Brown died suddenly. Born in Denver in 1874 and moved to Arvada<br />

60 years ago. Lived on Graves Ave until he moved to h ome on Ralston.<br />

He was/OOF - 23 years as treasurer, a member of Golden Masonic Lodge<br />

and Clear Creek Valley Grange, 2 years as postmaster of Arvada, 1932 to<br />

1933.<br />

"Anna Juchem, 73, owner and operator of the famous Juchem Ranch at<br />

Juchem Station, died Thursday night at her home after only a few hours'<br />

illness. She was born on the Ranch, which was homesteaded by her parents<br />

and became onf of the famous pioneer ranches of this County. She and sister,<br />

Lena, operated ranch after death of parents. Lena Putman died three months<br />

to the day before her. Both were also stricken while in Grange Hall on Wadsworth.<br />

John A. Gorcich dies, 84, a retired brick contractor who served on both<br />

the School Board and the Town Board for 10 years. Lived in Arvada 29<br />

years. Secregary to Masonic Lodge 26 years.<br />

3,537 men between the ages of 21 - 36 registered for the draft.<br />

Frank Moulton died. Came to Arvada in 1914, a retired contractor who<br />

raised St Bernards.<br />

Robert Lucas died. Moved to Arvada in 1901. Mebiber of Baptist Church.<br />

The Old Hackberry Tree, a containing the story of the origin of<br />

the Arvada Garden Club, as a result of the cutting down of the hackberry<br />

tree. The record of the founding, a quarterly with a picture of the tree and<br />

a copy of the dedication service has been placed beneath the stone, which<br />

says - The Children's Christmas Tree - to the memory of Dr Richard<br />

Russell, Arvada's first mayor, at McIlvoy Park.<br />

Dr T. R. Thorn named Draft Doctor.<br />

Jeffco Unit of Colo National Guard to be enlarged under Defense Act. allotted<br />

12 more men - 168th Field Artillery. It will be converted to a regiment of<br />

155 millimeter guns and field rifles and diesel tractors are to be standard equipment.<br />

It will be inducted into Federal Service in January and sent to Tennessee<br />

for a year's training. Men of draft age may volunteer to enlist in this organi-<br />

at ion.<br />

Arvada dolled up for Xmas, decorated lampposts and tree at Wadsworth<br />

and Grandview (where the f lagpole used to be). JC put up evergreen wreaths<br />

and roping and the lights in the lamp were dipped in Xmas colors.<br />

Permanent board for library is organized: W. E. Callaham, Capt Mark<br />

Rhoads, Glenn Jackson, Mrs Richard Russell, and Mrs J. Phill Wainer. Yearly<br />

contract with Denver Public Library f or 200 books a month - 10c per book.<br />

All books free to public except rental shelf of the newest fiction and non-fiction.<br />

Eleanor Cochran died. Lived in Arvada from 1908 to 1926.<br />

Frank Churches of Broomfield killed when truck hit by C E S passenger<br />

train near Semper. Son of Henry Church and lived on Church's Ranch since<br />

his birth 78 years ago.<br />

Janet Chinn killed in coast auto wreck, covered by icy roads. She was<br />

not injured but died of heart failure and shocid. She'd been a resident of Arvada<br />

20 years and taught in the Arvada schools for 15 years.<br />

December 26<br />

Florence Sharp died. Moved to Arvada as bride of Clarence Sharp in<br />

December of 1896. Engaged in turkey raising for 30 years.<br />

Ammunition plant may be located in County at Hayden Ranch a few miles<br />

southeast of Golden between Colfax EY Alameda. Will be operated by Remington<br />

Arms Co.
