Hundreds of Key Club Teens Join in Miami
Lakes’ Largest Food Drive To Feed Homeless
Hundreds of South Florida teens, representing seven local Key Clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis
Club of Greater Miami Lakes, recently gathered at Miami Lakes Town Hall on Saturday November
7, 2015 in the culmination of a weeks-long food drive to feed the homeless.
Under the direction of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Miami Lakes, the teens—from Key
Clubs at Miami Lakes Educational Center, Barbara Goleman Senior High, Hialeah-Miami Lakes
Senior High, American Senior High, Mater Lakes Academy, Jose Marti Mast Academy, and Hialeah
Gardens Senior High –brought thousands of cans of food and bottled water to the gathering at
Town Hall.
Joining the teens for the event were Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi, Vice Mayor Manny
Cid, and council members Frank Mingo, Tony Lama and Caesar Mestre.
In recognition of the teens’ efforts, which were part of Key Club International’s Key Club
Week worldwide, the Mayor presented a proclamation declaring the day as Key Club Day in Miami
Lakes.
“What you Key Club members have done here today is absolutely amazing,” said the Mayor
in presenting an official proclamation which urged the people of Miami Lakes to ‘recognize the
meaningful work done by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Miami Lakes and their seven tireless Key
Clubs who are constantly giving of themselves to make our community a better place.’
In addition to presenting the proclamation, the Mayor received a special ‘I support Kiwanis
of Greater Miami Lakes’ t-shirt. He put the shirt on to present the proclamation.
“This was an outstanding event,” said Tom Freiwald, Past Distinguished Kiwanis Div. 25
LTG and the Kiwanis Key Club Advisor to the Key Clubs. “The Key Club members and their advisors
did a fantastic job which will enable us to distribute food to the homeless of the area, which
is particularly important around the holiday time.”
