Editor’s Message
Hi, Florida District!
I hope you had a wonderful winter vacation and enjoyed your break
from school! We may have half of the school year left, but the end of the Key
Club year is closer than it seems. Starting this January, zones around the District
will begin having spring zone rallies, where you and your club can meet people
from around your area, as well as Key Clubbers who are campaigning for
Executive office. You will also be electing next year’s lieutenant governors
(LTGs), so be sure to attend in order to have a part in choosing your next leaders.
If you’re at all interested in one of the appointed positions, talk to your LTG
as soon as possible; if you’re interested in the District Editor position, feel free to
text or email me. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have and prepare
you for what to expect if you’re appointed.
Some of my responsibilities entail assisting club editors, managing the Florida
District’s social media accounts, creating and editing newsletters, and designing
this bimonthly publication, The Sunshine Source. If you haven’t received
any monthly emails from me and you are a club president, editor, faculty
advisor, or Kiwanis advisor, then make sure your OIF is up to date! If you ever
find yourself in need of help, feel free to contact me; I’d love to help any
way that I can.
I hope you all enjoy this issue!
Yours in friendship and service,
Florida Key Clubbers,
This year has been life changing for myself,
and I hope you also found great growth so far.
Your Lieutenant Governors have worked tirelessly
to make this year the best, and they have been
doing a great job of just that. Having served on
three District Boards now, I know how true this is.
You all elected a special group of leaders last
spring, and I look forward to the class of leaders
you will bestow upon the board in the coming
months.
As we approach Lieutenant Governor elections
at Spring Zone Rallies, and push our efforts toward
District Conference, reflect on what your club has achieved so far this
year. Whether you will apply for awards or not, you have conquered new
territories for your clubs, and have climbed new mountains. Not one year is
the same, and make sure you can remember this one, and seal those
memories at DCON. Every year of my Key Club experience has been
marked with the excitement of gathering with upwards of 2,000 members
to celebrate our service and exceptional leadership within our clubs.
Last year, I was able to see what was beyond the Florida District and attend
International Convention in Indianapolis. This was an incredible experience,
and I hope you join us as we travel just only one state north, to Atlanta,
Georgia. Our convention tour is sure to spring up new friendships
and connect you across the globe to other service leaders. More info will
follow.
Lastly, reconsider our District goals. Has your club contributed what you
can to our goal of 300,000 service hours? Have you all held a Key Goes
Green project, helping us hit 30,000 Governor's Project hours? If not, the
year still holds substantial opportunity.
See you at your Spring Zone Rally,
Governor Shane Meagher
Meet a Key Clubber
Haley Gordon
Meet Haley Gordon, a senior and longtime
Key Clubber at Deerfield Beach High
School. She is also a member of SECME
(Banner Committee), Transformations (Art
Club), National Honor Society, and Multicultural
Club, but she said that her involvement
with the Kiwanis Family comes first for her
and has since her days as a Builders Club officer.
She has served as her Key Club’s President
for two years and as Treasurer before
that, and she intends to join Circle K as soon
as she goes to college at Florida Gulf Coast
Academy.
Haley has always been extremely passionate
about spreading awareness and acceptance
for people on the autism spectrum, so she and
her mother started making “PuzzlePins” two
years ago in order to support the cause, originally
intending for it to be a one-time project.
“We came up with the idea of PuzzlePins
while looking through craft stuff in our garage.
We made a bunch to sell at school and
ended up raising $4,000, which we donated to
the very first Dan Marino Walkabout Autism.
We thought we were done with the project,”
Haley said, “but a couple months later people
were insisting that we make and sell more of
them. At that point, helping schools raise
some much needed money while raising autism
awareness and acceptance became our
focus.”
They now make the PuzzlePins in their
garage in their free time, and Haley designs
and distributes flyers for them, as well as promotes
the pins on social media. They sell
them at fundraisers, car washes, Kiwanis meetings,
and more. They even sold their pins at
last year’s Florida Key Club DCON in order
12

to raise money for The Eliminate Project.
Though PuzzlePins is not an official nonprofit
organization, Haley and her mother give
almost all of their profits to autism related
charities and schools to help benefit the needs
of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD).
“We have given donations in the form
of materials for the special needs classrooms,
iPads, books, gift cards for ESE teachers, and
more. We've even sold PuzzlePins to raise
money for a scholarship for one lucky student,”
said Gordon.
She will continue her efforts to spread
autism awareness through service as a member
of Circle K and later as a Kiwanian.
“Starting PuzzlePins has made a huge
difference in my life as it has helped me to
come out of my shell. I also learned to embrace
the wonderful and unique things about
my brother,” said Haley, “and I will always be
his biggest supporter and advocate. The Key
Club core values are just an extension of how
I was raised: to be caring, to include others, to
lead by example and to always be aware of
how my actions affect others. These two facets
of my life have helped shape me into the person
I am today and will only help me grow as
an individual to always be an asset to my community.”
Want to know more about PuzzlePins?
and Kerri Gordon through
d Leadership Conference
Everything you need to know about DCON can be found at
http://floridakeyclub.org/dcon2016.
In order to register someone for the conference, you must have
their first and last name, a correct email address, dates of arrival and
departure, as well as dietary restrictions. It is encouraged that each
Key Club member choose to add ten dollars to their registration fee,
as these funds will go the Key Club Endowment Fund, which you can
read more about here.
This year clubs will need to find students to fill rooms. The district
will not match students or adults to complete a quad or double
room. Zones or divisions may be helping clubs find matches, so contact
your Lt. Governor or Zone Administrator if you need help filling a
quad room for students or a double room for adults.
While on the topic of DCON registration, it is important to note
that there are only two months left to fundraise for the event. The
“Rule of Thirds” suggests that your Kiwanis Club pays for one third of
the cost of DCON, you fundraise with your club to earn one third,
and each Key Clubber personally pays for one third. You can find
fundraising ideas under the fundraising guide button on this website.
Working Together
Key Club would not be where it is today, with over 270,000 members
worldwide, or have the great impact it does without the help of some
key organizations. Key Club International’s preferred charities (UNICEF,
March of Dimes, and Children’s Miracle Network), vision partners
(Nickelodeon and Landscape Structures Inc.), and co-sponsors (Rustic
Pathways and the U.S. Army) have played instrumental roles in all that we
do. We look forward to changing more lives for the better with your help!
A Message from the Service and Major Emphasis Committee
Dear District Leaders,
Please take the time to inform your clubs about entering the Service Fair at
DCON by April 1st. This is an amazing opportunity for letting awesome service
ideas of individual clubs shine and give them the chance to expand
and continue. Service is the number one objective of Key Club and this
traditional Service Fair is the last chance our awesome Key Clubbers have
to show off their amazing projects from this last year. The Service Fair also
serves a purpose for our Key Clubbers to reflect on their year of Service
and learn new ideas for future use.
Service Grants
Trinity Preparatory High School—Senior Prom
Bradenton Christian School—CHOW NOW
Florida Opportunity Fund (FLOF)
The Florida Opportunity Fund (FLOF) is a grant for service projects available only
in the Florida District of Key Club International. FLOF can give clubs up to 2/3 the
money necessary for service projects; however, schools must provide 1/3 of the
amount they wish to receive. The amount of money you can get ranges from
$100 to $1,000.
Your club must be in good standing, meaning they have submitted most Pride
Reports on time, completed the OIF, paid dues, and are active in service projects
and divisional/district events. Above are two FLOF service grant recipients.
Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF)
The Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) is Key Club International’s grant program for
service projects. You can receive funding for projects between $100 to $2,000
once a year.
Applicants must have an adult advisor, and divisional projects are not eligible
to receive a YOF Grant. Applications are due October 15th, so keep this opportunity
in mind for next year!
A Few Ke
Key Club is the world’s largest and oldest student-led organization, with
over 270,000 members in 37 nations worldwide, the newest addition being
Japan. It originated in Sacramento, California, in 1925. Two Kiwanians
who were also administrators chose to establish a club to develop leadership
in eleven of the school’s “key boys,” hence the name “Key Club.”
Key Club is one of the branches of the Kiwanis International Family, in addition
to Aktion Club, Circle K International, Builders Club, and Kiwanis
Kids. However, Key Club remains the largest of the organizations and
grows in membership each year.
OFFICER INFORMATION FORMS (OIFs) are to be filled out by the secretary as
soon as possible and should be updated throughout the year. They allow the
lieutenant governor and Executive Committee members to contact club officers
and send information regarding divisional, district, and international news.
PRIDE REPORTS are monthly online reports detailing each club’s service, meeting
attendance, and more. They are to be filled out by the Club Secretary on
the 10th of each month. These reports allow Lieutenant Governors and district
executive officers to track the club’s involvement.
Visit this website to fill out your OIF and Pride Reports:
Secretaries and clubs who fill out all Pride Reports are eligible for
awards and recognition at the District Education and Leadership
Conference (DCON). If you have questions, contact your LTG or
District Secretary Jose Leoncio at secretary@floridakeyclub.org.
