The Type 4 Vessels
These two vessels ordered on 27 J'aly
1940 frorp Thornycrofts under the 1940
programme were considerably different
from the other Hunts and had originated
from a proposed 1000-ton destroyer
design of October 1938, which had not
been accepted by the Admiralty. The
proposal was revived in March 1940 after
a meeting between Sir John Thomycroft
and the Controller. Admiral Bruce
Fraser. Four sketch designs of vessels of
between 920 and 1115 tons and between
260 feet and 280 feet, with a speed of
.between 2T and 32[: knots and armed
with either two.or three twin 4in guns,
were proposed. These designs were again
rejected.by the DNC on the following
grounds:
. No 2 mounting could not fire forward
o The wireless office was too small.
' . Magazine and depth charges store
