Congress 2014<br />
The IUCN World <strong>Parks</strong> Congress 2014 was held in<br />
Sydney, Australia, from 12 <strong>to</strong> 19 November 2014.<br />
A global event, <strong>the</strong> Congress attracted more than<br />
6,000 delegates from over 170 countries. The<br />
Congress is held only once a decade, with <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>me for Sydney being ‘<strong>Parks</strong>, people, planet:<br />
inspiring solutions’.<br />
The Congress showcased a wide variety of<br />
inspiring solutions based on park <strong>and</strong> protected<br />
area approaches that respect <strong>and</strong> conserve<br />
nature, while benefitting human health <strong>and</strong><br />
prosperity. Delegates <strong>to</strong>ok s<strong>to</strong>ck of not just what is<br />
challenging us, but how innovative people<br />
around <strong>the</strong> world are implementing protected<br />
area solutions <strong>to</strong> deal with an array of challenges,<br />
from climate change <strong>to</strong> livelihoods <strong>and</strong> human<br />
health <strong>and</strong> well-being.<br />
The Congress program comprised of eight<br />
parallel streams:<br />
– Reaching conservation goals<br />
– Responding <strong>to</strong> climate change<br />
– Improving health <strong>and</strong> well-being<br />
– Supporting human life<br />
– Reconciling development challenges<br />
– Enhancing diversity <strong>and</strong> quality of governance<br />
– Respecting indigenous <strong>and</strong> traditional<br />
knowledge <strong>and</strong> culture<br />
– Inspiring a new generation<br />
There were also four cross-cutting <strong>the</strong>mes that<br />
were integrated in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> program:<br />
– Marine<br />
– World Heritage<br />
– Capacity Development<br />
– New Social Compact<br />

The Improving Health <strong>and</strong> Well-being: <strong>Healthy</strong><br />
<strong>Parks</strong> <strong>Healthy</strong> <strong>People</strong> stream at <strong>the</strong> IUCN World<br />

Service. This stream was targeted at environment<br />
<strong>and</strong> health professionals <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs with an<br />
interest in <strong>the</strong> fields of nature, human health <strong>and</strong><br />
well-being.<br />
This <strong>Guide</strong> covers <strong>the</strong> park management<br />
approaches, current international practices <strong>and</strong><br />
projects, as well as <strong>the</strong> latest research as covered<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Improving Health <strong>and</strong> Well-being: <strong>Healthy</strong><br />
<strong>Parks</strong> <strong>Healthy</strong> <strong>People</strong> stream program at <strong>the</strong> IUCN<br />
World <strong>Parks</strong> Congress 2014.<br />
