There are many deep teach<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stories. Underst<strong>and</strong> that humour<br />

is a part of <strong>the</strong> stories <strong>and</strong> part of who <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> peoples are, but that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is much more to <strong>the</strong> stories than just <strong>the</strong> humour.<br />

When deal<strong>in</strong>g with challenges such as improv<strong>in</strong>g retention rates for <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> students, try<br />

<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m directly <strong>in</strong> discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> topic. When it comes to p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> reasons for dropp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out or for stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> school, a survey may not work at all, but a ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g may get more of a response.<br />

Have students tell <strong>the</strong>ir stories - both those who did graduate <strong>and</strong> those who dropped out. Listen to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir stories. Validate <strong>the</strong> struggles <strong>and</strong> successes revealed. Look at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spirational stories — those<br />

students who overcome <strong>and</strong> succeed. We are all products of “<strong>in</strong> spite of” or “because of.”<br />
