Implications for Educational Practice<br />

‣ ¾ Expect use of <strong>the</strong> language to be part of any educational experiences with an <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong><br />

aspect that <strong>in</strong>volves outdoor trips or field studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> community.<br />

‣ ¾ Demonstrate respectful support for efforts with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> community to<br />

revitalize language <strong>and</strong> culture by<br />

‣ ¾ <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to your practice simple words <strong>and</strong> phrases for greet<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>teractions,<br />

place references, etc.<br />

‣ ¾ visibly acknowledg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> local First Nation’s culture through <strong>the</strong> use of images, artifacts<br />

such as a talk<strong>in</strong>g stick, or circle shar<strong>in</strong>g sessions<br />

‣ ¾ Be alert <strong>and</strong> sympa<strong>the</strong>tic to ways <strong>the</strong> school can be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> language <strong>in</strong>struction<br />

programs (i.e., for <strong>the</strong> local <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> language).<br />

‣ ¾ Base your actions <strong>and</strong> expectations on recognition of where <strong>the</strong> local community sits with respect<br />

to <strong>the</strong> current state of <strong>the</strong>ir language <strong>and</strong> culture revitalization/preservation efforts. Look to <strong>the</strong><br />

school’s <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> support worker(s) <strong>and</strong>/or trusted local contacts for guidance on this.<br />

‣ ¾ Embrace <strong>the</strong> need for <strong>in</strong>clusion of esteemed <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> language speakers as essential <strong>and</strong><br />

respected participants <strong>in</strong> language teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Language has to do with l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

connection to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>. Without<br />

knowledge of <strong>the</strong> language you don’t<br />

have as strong a connection to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

become <strong>and</strong> rema<strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of <strong>the</strong><br />

school curriculum <strong>and</strong> be recognized as<br />

Language is who we are. Language is<br />

important <strong>in</strong> ceremony, songs. There should<br />

be more resources for language <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

Language <strong>in</strong>struction should be <strong>in</strong>fused (i.e., made a part of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r subject areas,<br />

which may <strong>in</strong>volve co-teach<strong>in</strong>g). Language preservation programs like those <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Hawaii started at <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>and</strong> worked up. Spend fund<strong>in</strong>g to ensure Elders are present<br />

four hours a day. They are a resource of knowledge. This needs to be seen as an <strong>in</strong>vestment,<br />

not a token piece! The goal should be not only language preservation but language growth!<br />
