I’m talk<strong>in</strong>g about feel<strong>in</strong>g wonder as we notice<br />

sap run, witness tree growth, hold moss, pick<br />

berries, dig clams, sk<strong>in</strong> a seal. Emotion is also<br />

embedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chants <strong>and</strong> songs that go with<br />

<strong>the</strong>se experiences <strong>and</strong> activities.<br />

Worldview is a way of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong><br />

world. Perspective comes from learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

experience. The two are <strong>in</strong>terconnected, but<br />

whereas students can learn about <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong><br />

worldviews, <strong>the</strong>y need experiences to acquire<br />

an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> perspectives.<br />

<strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> education <strong>in</strong>volves h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g new ways to teach <strong>and</strong><br />

learn with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> outside of <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

education systems (e.g., <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g community<br />

members <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> classroom).<br />

to to create opportunities for experiential<br />

education. The challenge is to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrity of material drawn from <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong><br />

sources (through <strong>the</strong> help of local resource<br />

people) while at <strong>the</strong> same time help<strong>in</strong>g kids<br />

meet prov<strong>in</strong>cial learn<strong>in</strong>g expectations.<br />
