Grenham’s Funeral Directors Six<br />

Grenham’s Funeral Home is a family run bus<strong>in</strong>ess which<br />

has been gracefully passed down from generation to<br />

generation for <strong>the</strong> past 60 years, car<strong>in</strong>g for many bereaved<br />

families <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local community.<br />

“Our experience and heritage is unrivalled and our personal care second to<br />

none.” states Peter Grenham Proprietor.<br />

Grenham’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess was first established <strong>in</strong> 1909, when Ellen and<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> bought a bar and grocery bus<strong>in</strong>ess on Ma<strong>in</strong> Street, mak<strong>in</strong>g it<br />

<strong>the</strong> oldest bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. Sadly Mart<strong>in</strong> Grenham died <strong>in</strong> 1910 at<br />

a young age, leav<strong>in</strong>g Ellen a widow to carry on alone. She did this with<br />

great courage and tenacity and was eventually jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1920’s by her son Joe.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> early 1940’s, Joe’s first <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g arose by sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

coff<strong>in</strong>s through <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess, where he mounted and l<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m. He <strong>the</strong>n<br />

started to conduct funerals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early 1950’s, sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess on<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r path that it has followed with great success.<br />

In August of 2015 <strong>the</strong> Little Rascals crèche was reopened<br />

and is now under new management.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g undergone extensive refurbishment, both <strong>in</strong>side and out, <strong>the</strong><br />

premises has now become a larger, brighter, and a more <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g space which<br />

is very child friendly and equipped to <strong>the</strong> highest standards.<br />

The new management team, consists of Miriam Murphy and Claire<br />

McGreal, who are no strangers to <strong>the</strong> field of childcare and have almost<br />

twenty years of experience <strong>in</strong> this area. Little Rascals orig<strong>in</strong>ally opened<br />

<strong>in</strong> Kilgarve Gardens <strong>in</strong> 1997. It <strong>the</strong>n was on <strong>the</strong> move to <strong>the</strong> P<strong>in</strong>es<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1998 before f<strong>in</strong>ally f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g its home <strong>in</strong> its current location on <strong>the</strong><br />

Shannonbridge Road s<strong>in</strong>ce September 1999. Claire and Miriam both<br />

worked toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Little Rascals for several years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past and are<br />

delighted to have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to work toge<strong>the</strong>r aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g both recently upskilled, <strong>the</strong>y are very excited about current<br />

developments with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector, “standards are improv<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> time, for<br />

both children and staff and childcare is becom<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly professional<br />

field of practice” states Miriam. The extension of <strong>the</strong> ECCE scheme, which<br />

provides two years free pre-school for children aged between three to four<br />

years is ‘’a welcome development” from <strong>the</strong> ladies po<strong>in</strong>t of view.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction of Aistear, <strong>the</strong> Early Childhood Curriculum<br />

Framework, has prompted a move towards a much more holistic<br />

approach to early years care and education. Little Rascals is offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and provid<strong>in</strong>g a broad rang<strong>in</strong>g, child-centred programme of learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

which is <strong>in</strong>formed by <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Aistear and reflects each child’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual strengths and <strong>in</strong>terests.<br />

Little Rascals is committed to deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best quality service at very<br />

competitive prices and plans are <strong>in</strong> place to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to expand and develop<br />

<strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess. There are more renovations planned for <strong>the</strong> Summer and it is<br />

also hoped to transform <strong>the</strong> outdoor area. Both Claire and Miriam are strong<br />

advocates of <strong>the</strong> benefits of outdoor play for young children and <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

a large, secure garden to <strong>the</strong> rear of <strong>the</strong> premises. The children access this<br />

outdoor area as often as possible and it is hoped <strong>in</strong> time to <strong>in</strong>clude a polytunnel<br />

to let <strong>the</strong> children grow <strong>the</strong>ir own plants and vegetables. There is a<br />

total staff of five full-time workers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crèche at <strong>the</strong> moment, all of whom<br />

are experienced and qualified to a very high standard.<br />

They are currently tak<strong>in</strong>g enrolments for <strong>the</strong>ir ECCE free pre-school year,<br />

In <strong>the</strong> late 1970’s, Joe’s son,<br />

Peter jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

side of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and worked<br />

alongside his fa<strong>the</strong>r acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> skills and develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess. They purchased a convenient<br />

premises <strong>in</strong> St. Michael’s square, to be <strong>the</strong> first funeral home <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town<br />

.. Joe sadly died <strong>in</strong> 1989 leav<strong>in</strong>g Peter to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Peter’s son-<strong>in</strong>-law Niall Aylward jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>in</strong> 2009 and is<br />

now <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> all aspects of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

They recently completed an <strong>in</strong>tensive refurbishment, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

with present day funeral requirements, which is conveniently located <strong>in</strong> St.<br />

Michaels Square. “Our aim was to create a comfortable and <strong>in</strong>timate sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that one would experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> family environment. <strong>We</strong> want our visitors<br />

to feel welcome and comfortable <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y can arrange/conduct a<br />

funeral or discuss <strong>the</strong>ir needs”, mentioned Niall.<br />

Peter and Niall thanked everyone <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> funeral<br />

home was saved from flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se past few weeks. The funeral home<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed open all dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, thanks to <strong>the</strong> much appreciated<br />

help <strong>the</strong>y received.<br />
