believes that it is <strong>the</strong> communities that are keep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Ball<strong>in</strong>asloe and its surround<strong>in</strong>g area function<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and not <strong>the</strong> government. He states that ‘‘Ball<strong>in</strong>asloe<br />

has been totally rejected and now needs to make<br />

a clear statement about its future’’ and that he is<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g forward to meet<strong>in</strong>g and talk<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

locality.<br />

DENIS NAUGHTEN - INDEPENDENT<br />

Ready to stand up and be counted with <strong>the</strong> people,<br />

is Independent TD Drum native Denis Naughten. He<br />

is look<strong>in</strong>g forward<strong>in</strong>g to work<strong>in</strong>g on behalf of <strong>the</strong><br />

town’s and h<strong>in</strong>terlands of Roscommon and Galway<br />

and on mak<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs better for tomorrow and<br />

for <strong>the</strong> future. He is plann<strong>in</strong>g on putt<strong>in</strong>g forward<br />

credible, real solutions to deal with <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

fac<strong>in</strong>g Ireland and <strong>the</strong> people he represents.<br />

Push<strong>in</strong>g for more jobs to cross <strong>the</strong> Shannon, he aims<br />

to promote local towns to foreign <strong>in</strong>vestors to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to Ball<strong>in</strong>asloe as an example with <strong>the</strong><br />

St. Brigid’s campus ideally suited to develop as office<br />

accommodation for an <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>vestor who<br />

requires office space with high speed broadband access.<br />

He also notes that <strong>the</strong>re is great potential <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> locality<br />

too. ‘’ With <strong>the</strong> availability of natural gas, <strong>the</strong> upgrade of<br />

As part of her campaign she is promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development of rural <strong>in</strong>frastructures to<br />

promote job growth and public services and transport <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>We</strong>st and <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong><br />

country. <strong>An</strong>d is also look<strong>in</strong>g to quell <strong>the</strong> high numbers of young adults emigrat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

as she believes it is due to <strong>the</strong> austerity approach taken by <strong>the</strong> country’s current<br />

government. As well as this she is campaign<strong>in</strong>g to have <strong>the</strong> government to look<br />

towards those who are still be<strong>in</strong>g affected by <strong>the</strong> flood<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In terms of hous<strong>in</strong>g she is promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> abolishment of <strong>the</strong> new Water charges<br />

and of <strong>the</strong> property tax. She also plans on putt<strong>in</strong>g a limit on <strong>in</strong>terest rates banks<br />

Claire emphasises that ‘’ Rural Ireland has had enough and now is <strong>the</strong> time for change.’’<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> first matters that he will be address<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> creation of better Health<br />

Services, look<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> downgrad<strong>in</strong>g of Portiuncla Hospital as his ma<strong>in</strong> example.<br />

The Fianna Fail man has argued that <strong>the</strong> policy of mov<strong>in</strong>g all our services to Galway<br />

is utterly unacceptable, and that <strong>the</strong> mental health services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area must be<br />

upgraded.<br />

The councillor has also pushed for <strong>the</strong> creation of jobs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, acknowledg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that ‘’ Ball<strong>in</strong>asloe has been left beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>dustry wise <strong>in</strong> recent years and I look forward<br />

to meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess people over <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g weeks to listen to <strong>the</strong>ir views<br />

of promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> town and attract<strong>in</strong>g jobs to <strong>the</strong> area.’’ He plans on rejuvenat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

small towns and villages which have been affected by <strong>the</strong> economic climate just<br />

like this town through reduced rates to small and medium bus<strong>in</strong>esses, as well as<br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> local public services, such as <strong>the</strong> Garda Stations and <strong>the</strong> Post<br />

Offices.<br />

He is also look<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> small farm<strong>in</strong>g families. With plans for a radical new deal for<br />

<strong>the</strong>se families, he is hop<strong>in</strong>g to ensure <strong>the</strong> future of <strong>the</strong> family farm and to ga<strong>in</strong> fair<br />

prices for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

<strong>the</strong> water supplies and massive spare capacity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new sewerage treatment plant<br />

<strong>in</strong> Creagh I believe <strong>the</strong> IDA has <strong>the</strong> material to make a major play for new <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. ‘’<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g notably fought aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> government actions taken to Roscommon Hospital<br />

and also <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> wider health services, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Portiuncula Hospital and<br />

St. Brigid’s he has proven that he is dedicated to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and better<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

community. Show<strong>in</strong>g this even more he is putt<strong>in</strong>g an emphasis on key areas such<br />

as farm<strong>in</strong>g, agrifood and small bus<strong>in</strong>esses which he feels have not received <strong>the</strong><br />

recognition <strong>the</strong>y deserve, which has been <strong>the</strong> case <strong>in</strong> this town and its surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

area, and believes that this <strong>in</strong>justice and negligence needs to change.<br />

The TD has been also runn<strong>in</strong>g a weekly cl<strong>in</strong>ic <strong>in</strong> Gullane’s Hotel s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> new<br />

constituency was established. There he has been offer<strong>in</strong>g assistance to any who ask.<br />

The Drum man has emphasised <strong>the</strong> need to support <strong>the</strong>se communities, rural towns<br />

and those who want to help <strong>the</strong>mselves, understand<strong>in</strong>g that people want a hand up<br />

not a hand out.<br />

‘’I am committed to work<strong>in</strong>g to make that happen and to improve <strong>the</strong> future for this<br />

constituency and its people. ‘’<br />
