National Sports Broadcaster - Darren Frehill<br />

From contribut<strong>in</strong>g to Galway<br />

Bay FM at a young age to<br />

broadcast<strong>in</strong>g at huge events<br />

all over <strong>the</strong> world, RTE sports<br />

broadcaster Darren Frehill<br />

caught up with Life when he was<br />

<strong>the</strong> Master of Ceremonies at <strong>the</strong><br />

People of <strong>the</strong> Year Community<br />

Awards before Christmas.<br />

Darren, orig<strong>in</strong>ally from Laurencetown,<br />

attended primary school <strong>in</strong> Aughrim<br />

where his mo<strong>the</strong>r was a teacher. He<br />

<strong>the</strong>n moved onto secondary school <strong>in</strong><br />

Garbally College where his talents really<br />

began to flourish, as he was asked by<br />

his teachers to work as a liaison with<br />

Galway Bay FM to supply <strong>the</strong>m with<br />

scores from all of <strong>the</strong> school matches.<br />

He started call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> those results, but<br />

after a while got <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

report on some of <strong>the</strong> bigger events. “It<br />

was a great experience and gave me <strong>the</strong><br />

chance to get some early on air time at<br />

a very young age”, he added.<br />

Darren went to college at <strong>the</strong> Dun<br />

Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology before tak<strong>in</strong>g up a job with<br />

TV3 <strong>in</strong> 1998. He now lives <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong> with his family where he works as a sports<br />

broadcaster with RTE 2006 present<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Sunday Sport and is also one of <strong>the</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong> sports anchors on Morn<strong>in</strong>g Ireland on RTE Radio 1.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> sports broadcast<strong>in</strong>g obviously orig<strong>in</strong>ated from a love of sport, which was<br />

sourced at a young age for Darren, who played hurl<strong>in</strong>g and football for Kiltormer,<br />

Darren Frehill as MC at <strong>the</strong> recent People of <strong>the</strong> Year Awards held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shearwater Hotel.<br />

and soccer for Laurencetown FC, but also got <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> rugby, golf, cycl<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

swimm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

“It was my dream to become a professional sports person, unfortunately I<br />

was never good enough to make it so I turned my attention to broadcast<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

I thought if I can’t play sport, work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>se events would be <strong>the</strong> next best<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g”, shared Darren.<br />
