SJA Community \ Leigh Ann King ’06 Leigh Ann King’s first memories of swimming date back to when she was 6 years old, taking lessons at a neighborhood pool. She remembers being confused as to why her sister hated the lessons. To Leigh Ann, swimming was nothing short of fun. When she was 8, Leigh Ann’s mother insisted she join a summer league team to help burn off some “excess energy.” While she initially balked at the prospect of early morning practice sessions, she quickly discovered that training was enjoyable and that swimming came naturally. She was soon winning races and, at the age of 12, joined the Crawfish Aquatics year-round team. As a member of Crawfish Aquatics, Leigh Ann received two Don Cook Memorial Awards. She held records in the 50, 100 and 200 free. In four state meets, she scored more points than any other female swimmer. As a swimmer at St. Joseph’s Academy, Leigh Ann helped lead her teams to three state championships and one runner-up finish. She was named SJA’s Outstanding Sprinter all four years and received the Most Valuable Swimmer Award three years. As a member of SJA relay teams, Leigh Ann competed in 16 different events at the City and State championship meets. Her relay teams finished first 15 times and second once. At one time, her relay teams held two city and two state meet records. As an individual, Leigh Ann swam 58 different times. She won 51 times. She was the four-time City Meet and three-time State Meet champion in the 50 free. Her State Meet record time of 23.11, set in November of 2005, stands to this day. In the 100 free, Leigh Ann was undefeated over four years, capturing the City and State championships at that distance three times. Leigh Ann was named the City Championship Swimmer of the Meet and State Championship Swimmer of the Meet three times, was a fourtime All-Metro Team honoree and has four All-American Consideration times and eight Automatic All-American times to her credit. She was named The Advocate’s Star of Stars for Swimming in 2003, 2004 and 2005. As a senior at SJA, Leigh Ann was the thirdfastest high school female swimmer in the country in the 50 free. Her times in the 50 and 100 free were better than any other female high school swimmer in the country and all but six male swimmers in the 50 free. Leigh Ann swam on the Florida State University swim team as a freshman before transferring to LSU in 2007. She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009 and 2010. She earned three varsity letters at LSU. Leigh Ann graduated from LSU in 2010 with a degree in public relations and became certified as an elementary teacher in 2012. She is now in her third year teaching second grade at Wildwood Elementary in Baton Rouge. 8 . SJA Connections
