Camp Buddies are an extension of Dovercourt’s Inclusion Services and are supervised and supported by
both Camp Directors and Inclusion Supervisors. Dovercourt is committed to the inclusion of all campers
regardless of abilities, and professional support workers and Camp Buddies are both integral parts of this
program. Buddies are assigned to campers who require additional support to ensure a successful camp
experience and may have any of the following issues: a mild physical or mental disability, difficulty in
focusing on tasks or understanding instructions, or difficulties in making friends or engaging appropriately
in social situations.
Expectations and Responsibilities:
Camp Buddies are responsible for helping a young camper through their camp day, which includes
helping him or her stay focused on the activities, manage through transition times, and stay with the
group. The main role of the Buddy is to ensure that the camper is interacting with the group, other
campers and camp staff in a safe and appropriate manner.
Who Should Apply:
Ideal candidates are those who have an interest in working with children on a one-to-one basis in a camp
setting with children who have special needs. Babysitting experience is highly valued for this position as
is an interest in social work or behavioural science or psychology. Ideal candidates are high-school or
university students who are available for at least 3 weeks of the summer, and with some experience in a
camp or recreation environment.
Required qualifications: Police Record Check, for service with the vulnerable sector, Standard First Aid
& CPR C, and High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development.
All other training will be provided.
Details:
This is a volunteer position and all hours can be counted and approved for high school volunteer hour
requirements. Buddies must be available from 8:30-4:30 during the camp day, with the possibility of being
available from 7:30am until 6:00pm for campers who require extended care. In return for volunteering
their time, Camp Buddies will be provided with an allowance at the end of each week to offset any costs
incurred for volunteering. The amount will be determined on a weekly basis by the Inclusion Coordinator.
