They used white because God’s tallit is white. Any blue tekhelet that is not hillazon<br />

based is to be considered as kela ilan (alternative dye) <strong>and</strong> Gemara (B. Metz. 61b)<br />

warns <strong>of</strong> divine punishment for wearing kela ilan. (False Tekhelet, Mois Navon,<br />

5764)<br />

But every Jew knew that “The essence (ikar) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mitzvah is tekhelet <strong>and</strong> one<br />

wearing white without tekhelet has not fulfilled a complete mitzvah” (mitzvah<br />

shleimah). Rashi on Men. 40a<br />

There was a new zeal to determine <strong>the</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> techlet <strong>and</strong> reinstitute <strong>the</strong> full<br />

mitzvoth.<br />
