As the Integration of Health and Social Care 

continues in the city, we are often asked at 

ACVO about what has been happening. 

The third part of Alan Clark’s blog is now live. Focusing on the 

uncertainty in the Oil and Gas sector in Aberdeen, the knock on 

effect to other industries and the challenges faced by those facing 

redundancy Alan draws on his own experience to raise awareness 

of these issues and highlight where to find both practical and 

emotional support. 

“Last time, I wrote about the stress and anxiety I faced when the 

initial redundancies were made. It seemed like only a matter 

of time before further redundancies would take place……….. 

and unfortunately a couple of months later, that is exactly what 

happened. It was explained to us that with the market conditions 

showing no signs of improving, further cuts were necessary in 

order to try and preserve the business. However, unlike the 

previous round, the team I was in was now going to face cuts. 

Needless to say, the anxiety that we all faced was heightened, 

and the dynamic within the office changed. Suddenly, the support 

network we had as a team was about to be shattered, as we were 

all plunged into a redundancy selection process together. I was 

very fortunate to work with such consummate professionals (and 

friends) and the sense of togetherness never waivered. Yes, the 

team would be disbanded and some of us would lose our jobs, 

but everyone remained supportive and the sense of camaraderie 

helped.”

Aberdeen Children Invited to Name New Charity Mascot 

Family support charity Home-Start Aberdeen is inviting primary children throughout the city to 

help name their new charity mascot. 

The mascot, a full-size furry brown bear, has recently joined the Home-Start Aberdeen team 

and is set to enjoy a busy schedule attending its various fundraising events and activities. 

Given the charity’s work with children in the city, the Home-Start Aberdeen team felt it would 

be fitting to offer local primary classes the chance to decide the mascot name. 

The winning class will receive their own Home-Start Aberdeen teddy bear, along with a visit 

from the newly named mascot. 

“We are all very excited about the arrival of our latest furry team member,” says Georgette Cobban, scheme manager, 

Home-Start Aberdeen. “The mascot will be invaluable in terms of raising awareness of our work in the city. We want him – 

or her – to appeal to as many of our young people as possible. For these reasons, we thought it would be appropriate – and 

fun – to ask city schoolchildren to help us to decide on a name. 

“Our work is all about engaging with communities. We already enjoy very positive working relationships with local schools 

and the competition provides an opportunity to strengthen this relationship with both our education professionals and 

young people. 

“We hope to receive lots of entries and are looking forward to seeing what the children come up with.” 

Classes who wish to enter Home-Start Aberdeen’s mascot naming competition can do so by emailing their suggested name, 

along with their school, class and contact details to admin@homestartaberdeen.org.uk by Friday, 20 May. 

Home-Start Aberdeen is one of Scotland’s largest Home-Start schemes. The charity provides local families with emotional

Important News from the Cash in your Pocket Team 

Hi all…as some of you may be aware the CIYPP Team are no longer located within 

ACVO. Cfine have provided accommodation / support to enable us to continue our 

services while we work towards establishing ourselves within a more permanent 

location hopefully for many years to come. This is at an advanced stage and we 

should be able to provide an update before long. 

Users of CIYPP services will largely be unaware of behind the scene operational transitional arrangements that are in place. 

Appropriate mail forwarding/collection is operating effectively and we do not anticipate any significant disruption to the 

flow of referrals either being received or forwarded for action.

As soon as we have established our home and feel that we can with confidence provide a permanent Phoneline Number you

Launch of the ACOSVO Women Leaders’ Network 

We are excited to announce the launch of the ACOSVO Women Leaders’ Network, 

a peer support network for women leaders in Scottish voluntary organisations. 

We are celebrating this with a launch event and networking lunch on 9 June, 

12pm-2pm in Edinburgh which will be the first in a series of engaging and inspiring 

events. 

The network was founded in March 2016 by a group of women who came together to explore opportunities to provide support 

to women leaders in Scotland’s third sector. We were delighted to welcome Dorothy Dalton who shared her experience of 

setting up Groundbreakers, a women’s network for Chief Officers south of the border. It was agreed that a network would be 

highly beneficial to address barriers to women’s equality, progression, and success in the sector, and that a series of events 

and activities would be developed with the aim of supporting this. 

The role of the network will be to provide opportunities for women Chief Officers to network and learn from each other. 

Further aims of the network will be to encourage and support women aspiring to become Chief Officers; connect with 

women leaders across other sectors in Scotland; promote good practice with regards to gender equality in third sector 

organisations; and to influence and help shape policy on these issues in Scotland’s wider public life. 

The launch will be celebrated with a networking lunch on 9 June, 12pm-2pm, at Lindsays in Edinburgh. Please register here

YACNE Creative Research 

Youth Arts Collective North East (YACNE) creates opportunities for young people aged 0-25 to 

shape and participate in the arts and to explore and develop their creative potential. 

YACNE is made up of youth, arts and community organisations from across Aberdeen city and 

shire, led by Aberdeen Performing Arts. 

We are currently investigating and engaging with a range of non-British, migrant families and communities in Aberdeen city 

and shire, to establish and understand their cultural needs and aspirations. 

To help with this we have created 2 surveys for those who are non-British to complete and share their views, one for parents

Custody Suites - ‘TV’ / PowerPoint Adverts 

Police Scotland is committed to working with partners who provide a variety of support services to those 

who find themselves in Police custody as a result of, or have issues with substance misuse, financial 

problems, domestic related incidents or other social issues. 

In an effort to change the perception of the custody environment from being punitive measure to one 

which is seen as the first step to support or recovery, 3 television screens are strategically located in the 

custody centre. 

The purpose of these screens is to advertise various support services that may be potentially available on site or post 

custody.

ENABLE launches #ENABLEthevote 

In the run up to next month’s Scottish elections, Enable Scotland has 

launched its Enable the Vote campaign. 

The organisation wants to ensure that people who have learning 

disabilities can use their vote, this includes producing factsheets to 

help people know how to vote and campaigning for changes to allow people who have learning disabilities more help, 

education and access.

Grampian HA Achieves Investors in People Silver 

Reaccreditation 

To bring Grampian Housing Association’s year of 40th anniversary celebrations to a 

rewarding end, the organisation has once again achieved the prestigious Investors in 

People (IIP) Silver Accreditation. This was the Association’s first assessment against the 

latest IIP framework which sets a new high standard. 

Grampian Housing Association has been recognised as an Investor in People for 15 years 

and was first awarded Silver Accreditation in 2013.

Use new powers to invest £5 a week in every child, say child 

poverty campaigners 

• New Scottish Parliament faces massive increases in child poverty 

• £5 top up to child benefit would reduce child poverty by 14% - lifting 30 000 children out of poverty 

Launching its programme for the next Scottish Government the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) today calls on the new 

parliament to seize a golden opportunity to reduce child poverty by investing £5 a week in every child through child benefit . 

The new Scottish Parliament will be confronted with an imminent rise in child poverty, with a projected 50% increase by 

2020 largely driven by UK tax and benefit policies. Child benefit alone is set to lose 28% of its value by the end of the decade 

according to the Group. 

In the face of this looming crisis CPAG is calling on the next Scottish government to use new social security powers to 

invest an extra £5 a week in child benefit . The campaigners say this policy alone could reduce child poverty in Scotland by 

a substantial 14%, lifting 30 000 children out of poverty. 

John Dickie, Director of CPAG in Scotland noted, 

“New powers coming to Scotland provide a golden opportunity for the new Scottish Government to invest directly in the 

next generation, reduce child poverty and set Scotland on a different trajectory from what independent forecasters tell us 

will happen to child poverty across the rest of the UK. 

£5 a week per child could help thousands of families avoid a visit to the food bank. It could make the difference between 

children missing out on school trips and joining in with their friends. Above all, £5 a week will reduce rates of child poverty 

in Scotland by up to 14%, improving the prospects of thousands of Scotland’s children.” 

CPAG’s programme for government also sets out a range of measures aimed at prioritising the eradication of child poverty 

in Scotland and minimising its damaging effects on children, families, services and the country’s economy. 

CPAG calls on the next government to: 

• Make a strong, public commitment to ending child poverty by introduction of a Child Poverty Act for Scotland. Such an 

act would provide a framework for the prevention, reduction and eradication of child poverty in Scotland. 

• Remove the financial barriers that prevent children from achieving their goals. The cost of school books, transport, 

uniform and lunches create a ‘learning levy’ which excludes children . As part of this, investment in school clothing grants 

and reducing the cost of school will be key to tackling the educational attainment gap. 

• Reduce demand for food banks in Scotland. Minimising errors and delays in devolved social security, and ensuring families 

can access the Scottish Welfare Fund and benefits advice, will reduce income crisis and protect families from food poverty. 

• Ensure work pays for in-work families experiencing child poverty. 56% of children living in poverty live in working 

families. This will require an increase the availability of high quality jobs and family friendly employment practices. 

Implement an ambitious childcare strategy for Scotland including clear timescales for delivery.

Alec Dickson Trust Funding Available to Help Young People Volunteer 

The Alec Dickson Trust provides grants of up to £500 to help young people of up to 30 or small groups of young people run 

a volunteering or community service project in their local area. The fund seeks to support projects that enhance the lives of 

others, particularly those most marginalised by society such as the homeless; those with drug dependency problems; and 

people with disabilities; etc. The Trustees particularly like to fund projects that involve lots of volunteers, and/or encourage 

these young people to stay engaged as volunteers in the long term. Trustees will meet four times a year to consider

United Way UK has announced two new grants for charities in the UK. 

United Way envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their potential thanks to a good start in life, an 

inspiring education, a path to income mobility and a healthy lifestyle. To do this, we take a collaborative approach with other 

charitable organisations, businesses and individuals interested in making a positive contribution and supporting those in 

need. 

There are 28 Give Local Grants worth £1,000 which will be awarded to community based, local projects relating to their 

priority areas of education, income or health. Three Community Impact Grants of £10,000 are available to address the 

pressing educational needs of disadvantaged children and young people. 

The deadline for applications is 25th April.

Triangle Trust 1949 Fund Open to Organisations Working with Unpaid Carers (UK) 

Grants are available for up to £80,000 over three years with a maximum of £35,000 in year one. The emphasis of the 

Development Grant is to support the development of a solid foundation for the future. The grant could, for example, be used 

to enable an organisation to make a step change such as diversifying its income streams or setting up a social enterprise to 

help it become more sustainable in the long term. 

Registered charities, not-for-profit social enterprises and community interest companies that are working within the UK and 

have a UK office are eligible to apply. Applications from organisations working in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales are 

particularly welcome. Organisations must have a constitution whose primary purpose is to support unpaid carers. 

The deadline for applications is 28 April 2016 (12 noon).

Social Isolation and Loneliness Fund 2016 - 17 Opens for applications 

Voluntary Action Fund (VAF) has announced the launch of the new Social Isolation and Loneliness Fund (SIALF) on behalf of 

the Scottish Government. The aim of the £500,000 one-year Fund is to support community-based projects tackling social 

isolation. Grants of up to £20,000 are available to voluntary and community group for projects that achieve at least one of 

the following outcomes: an increase in social connectedness of people experiencing disadvantage; and a reduction in the 

effects of social isolation in people experiencing disadvantage. The deadline for applications is the 20th May 2016. Funded 

projects will be delivered between July 2016 and June 2017, by which time all activities should be concluded and all grant 

money spent.

Tesco Community Groups: Apply for a Bags of Help grant 

We will award grants each year in around 400 Tesco regions to make sure the funding is spread evenly across England, Wales 

and Scotland. In total the Bags of Help programme will support thousands of projects each year. 

Because we’re expecting there to be a major demand for grants, Groundwork will assess all of the applications received 

and then provide a shortlist of the applications received for a Tesco Shortlisting panel to agree three successful projects to 

forward to a vote in Tesco stores. 

Tesco customers will vote over two weekends in their store for their favourite shortlisted local project. Grants will then be 

awarded as follows: 

1st place in Tesco customer vote: £12,000 grant 

2nd place in Tesco customer vote: £10,000 grant 

3rd place in Tesco customer vote: £8,000 grant

Help the Homeless Accepting Applications for Summer Round 

Help the Homeless, a registered charity, is currently accepting applications from small and medium-sized UK registered 

charities with a turnover of less than £1 million per year. 

Help the Homeless provides a grant scheme to support small and medium-sized UK charities that work to help homeless 

people rebuild their lives, re-enter society and live a normal life. 

Funding is targeted at projects to find practical ways to help disadvantaged individuals return to the community through 

training or residential facility provision, rather than merely providing short term shelter. 

Small and medium-sized registered charities with a turnover of under £1 million per annum can apply for grants of up to 

£5,000. 

The scheme will principally fund capital costs, but may consider revenue costs if necessary to the project. 

Projects must assist individuals in their return to mainstream society, rather than simply offering shelter or other forms of 

sustenance. 

Applications are considered four times a year.

BBC Children in Need Grants Programme is Open to Applications (UK) 

BBC Children in Need is currently accepting applications from charities and not-for-profit organisations in the UK that 

support children and young people who are 18 years and younger. 

Small grants and Large grants are available to not-for-profit organisations in the UK that are supporting children and young 

people of 18 years and under who are experiencing disadvantage through: 

• Illness, distress, abuse or neglect. 

• Any kind of disability. 

• Behavioural or psychological difficulties. 

• Living in poverty or situations of deprivation. 

• Organisations must be working to combat this disadvantage and to make a real difference to children and young people’s 

lives. 

To be eligible, projects should: 

• Take the initiative and show clearly how they will make a difference in children and young people’s lives. 

• Address the challenges the children and young people face, build their skills and resilience, empower them and extend 

their choices in life. 

• Involve children and young people in the design, delivery and evaluation of their work. 

• Be keen to keep learning about their work so that their ability to make a difference in children and young people’s lives 

can keep on improving. 

Applications can be made for either of the following: 

• Main Grants of over £10,000 can support projects for up to three years. There is no upper limit but very few grants over 

£100,000 are made and most grants are for much less. 

• Small Grants of up to £10,000 can support projects for one year. 

The grants are to be used for direct project costs that relate clearly and directly to a project. These can include salaries, 

volunteer expenses, building hire costs and travel costs. In many cases project costs also include less delivery-focused 

aspects such as line management, administration, insurance and utilities. Match funding is not required. 

The deadlines for Small Grant applications are 1 June, 1 September, and 1 December 2016. 

The deadlines for Main Grant applications are 15 May and 15 September 2016.

New Ufi Funding digital solutions for vocational learning 

The Ufi Charitable Trust (Ufi), which aim is to help improve vocational skills in the UK’s 

workforce by funding digital solutions for vocational learning, has announced that its 

funding scheme is open for applications. 

Registered charities, community interest companies, social enterprises, not for profits, companies, community associations, 

FE colleges and public bodies can apply for projects focused on adult and vocational learning using technology. Eligible 

applicants can apply for support for 2 projects at a time and Ufi envisages investing in a wide range of projects from amounts 

as low as £2,500 to others in excess of £250,000. Match funding is not required but for projects over £100,000, however, 

having other investment would up the chances of success. The focus is to develop scale through technology rather than 

specific devices, Ufi is looking to fund projects for networks and mechanisms that have mass penetration. 

The closing date for stage 1 applications is the 12th May 2016. Successful applicants will go forward to Stage 2 and have a 

month in which to develop further more detailed proposals.

NORTH EAST JOINT SUPERVISORY SKILLS PROGRAMME – 

STEPPING INTO MANAGEMENT 

What is it? 

A programme to assist first line managers from across public and third sectors in the North East of 

Scotland to help deliver even better services to local people through the way they manage people. 

This modular programme is set against the backdrop of public sector reforms and challenges. 

What are the objectives? 

The programme aims to: 

Help participants develop their supervisory knowledge, skills and behaviours and 

Create sustainable networks of learning and support across public and third sectors. 

Who should attend? 

The programme will benefit those who are new to supervision and management or first line 

managers who want to refresh their skills and techniques in a collaborative environment. The 

programme is limited to 19 places for first line managers in the public and third sectors in the North 

East. 

What does it involve? 

The programme consists of 5 modules delivered over 3 consecutive days. These modules cover 

the essentials of effective people management and are designed to provide a sound foundation for 

first line managers as well as an understanding of the shared challenges across sectors. 

How much will it cost? 

The 5 statutory organisations co-ordinating this programme have provided the funding so there is 

no direct cost to individuals. Any associated expenses incurred by participants, eg travel, overnight 

accommodation etc, require to be paid by the participant’s organisation. 

When is it happening? 

The next programme will take place from 7 – 9 June 2016

The North-East Learning Collaborative 

(NELC) is teaming up with Leadership 

Exchange to offer this innovative 

programme to colleagues at NELC partner

THE PROGRAMME 

Leadership Exchange is a free cross-sector peer-learning programme open to staff at 

middle, senior, and executive levels. The programme provides a framework for leaders to 

learn from each other across sectors to develop their own leadership skills and their ability 

to work collaboratively.

NELC will offer two short information sessions in Aberdeen on 22 March for colleagues to 

learn more about the programme. A matching session on 28 April will be an opportunity

physical activity sessions to promote a healthy body for a healthy mind, and introduce participants to the wide range of 

activities on offer throughout Aberdeen City. 

Activities are open to participants of all ages and abilities and all equipment will be provided. Just wear some comfortable 

clothing and footwear and bring an open mind and we’ll provide the rest. Each session will last around an hour with an 

opportunity for a social tea or coffee and a chat afterwards.

Sensory Awareness Training with North East Sensory Services (NESS) 

There are still some spaces available for Sensory Awareness Training on 

Wednesday 11 th May 2016 at North East Sensory Services (NESS), 21 John 

Street, Aberdeen AB25 1BT. 

NESS’s Sensory Awareness Training aims to raise awareness of the needs of 

people living with a sensory loss. This includes people who are blind, visually 

impaired, Deaf or hard of hearing. 

During the training you will identify ways of communicating better with someone with 

a hearing loss, how to guide someone with a visual impairment, as well as some of 

the gadgets and technology that people use to make day to day life easier. By the 

end of the day you will have a better understanding of some of difficulties 

experienced day to day by someone who has a sensory loss, and what helps 

someone with a sensory loss to remain as independent as possible.

for people who use self harm as a coping strategy.

Free SURF Awards workshop on Community Led Regeneration

The SURF Awards for Best Practice in Regeneration are awarded to projects and initiatives that demonstrate real impact in 

tackling social and economic problems in disadvantaged places. At this free workshop, we bring together two SURF Award 

winning projects from 2015, alongside a contribution from our colleagues at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to explore 

transferrable lessons on the theme of Community Led Regeneration and Infrastructure. 

The two projects featured- Helmsdale Affordable Housing programme and Ullapool Harbour Trust- indicate the scale that

of how programmes of activity achieve required outcomes plays a significant role in assessing the effectiveness of the work 

we do and informing how work is delivered in the future. Although work is often carried out on a 1:1 basis, the focus will 

increasingly be on group work, recognising the contribution this makes in helping the young people to interact with their 

peers and wider networks.

Public Representative Required on Health & Transport Action Plan Steering 

Group 

Currently there is a vacant volunteer position for a Public Representative to sit on the Health & Transport Action Plan (HTAP) 

Steering Group. 

The HTAP was produced in 2008 and refreshed in 2014 by Nestrans, (the Regional Transport Partnership for Aberdeen City 

and Shire), NHS Grampian, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, The Moray Council and the Scottish Ambulance 

Service. Partners representing the Integration of Health and Social Care and from the Third Sector have now joined the 

Steering Group. 

The HTAP sets out a range of actions to promote healthier travel, minimise the impact of transport on our health and 

improve access to health and social care services. The Steering Group oversees the delivery of the action plan. Partners 

recognise the importance of involving a Public Representative in decision making at a strategic level. 

The Steering Group is scheduled to meet four times during 2016. There are two sub-groups which also meet quarterly. The 

Public Representative can attend these meetings as they wish. One focuses on Access to Health and Social Care, the other, 

Transport and Public Health. Meetings are usually in Aberdeen. It is the hope that the member of the public will be an 

advocate for all people in Grampian on issues related to transport. 

The Health and Transport Action Programme Manager, Andrew Stewart, will meet with any prospective Public Representative 

to discuss what support and training they might require to fully participate and benefit from their involvement with the 

group and explain the requirements of the role. The Health and Transport Action Plan Programme Manager would work 

closely with the Public Representative to support them as needs require.
