EXHIBITION BRIEFS 4DX COMES TO THE CARIBBEAN n CJ 4DPLEX has entered into a new partnership with Caribbean Cinemas. The agreement will bring 4DX technology to two movie theaters in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. With these openings, 4DX will be available in the Caribbean Islands for the first time. Caribbean Cinemas, the largest motion picture exhibitor in the Caribbean Islands, runs its 57 theaters with a total of 463 screens in Caribbean nations including Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Guyana. The first 4DX location for Caribbean Cinemas is scheduled to open this month at the Montehiedra Towne Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which was recently renovated to be equipped with high-end cinema technologies. Caribbean Cinemas next plans to open a 4DX location at VIP Multiplex in Dominican Republic. “As a theater chain that prides itself on being cutting edge, we are very excited to be partnering with CJ 4DPLEX and offer the immersive fivesense cinematic experience to our customers with these two launches. We’ve learned that state-of-the-art facilities, new buildings, remodeled facilities, and new technology are drivers for attendance,” said Caribbean Cinemas CEO Robert Carrady. CEC POWERED BY OMNITERM n CEC Theatres, a family-owned business that currently operates 19 theaters with 151 screens, has selected Omniterm theater management software (TMS) for its circuit. “With the rapid changes in technology, we decided to look for a theater management POS provider rather than to continue developing our own,” said Tony Ross, VP Finance, CEC Theatres. “After comparing the top choices in the market we selected Omniterm based on their software, experience, and the relationship built during the evaluation stage.” According to Greg Carter, director of operations for CEC Theatres, the upgrade from the company’s preexisting in-house solution has allowed them to concentrate on what they do best: cinema exhibition. “It was a very hard decision for us to move away from our own solution,” said Carter. “Omniterm TMS gives us a wholly integrated solution that will enable us to launch new programs and functionality that previously were on the drawing table.” In addition to the standard box office, concessions, and kiosk applications, CEC is using the system to deploy circuit-wide loyalty and gift card programs and provide customers the ability to purchase tickets online and on their smartphones. MOVIETICKETS.COM SIGNS LANDMARK CINEMAS n MovieTickets.com has entered into a deal with Canada’s Landmark Cinemas, which has locations throughout western Canada, Ontario, and the Yukon Territory. This new relationship will continue MovieTickets.com’s expansion into Canada, where it now offers advance tickets for nearly 75 percent of screens, representing over 90 percent of the country’s box office on any given weekend. “We look forward to increasing our presence in Canada to include Landmark Cinemas,” said Joel Cohen, CEO of MovieTickets.com. “Our own expansion within the Canadian market builds on our international growth strategy; this is especially valuable in a country where we are the only destination that aggregates advance ticketing from multiple theater chains.” Bill Walker, COO of Landmark Cinemas Canada, added, “MovieTickets.com is a great partner in Canada and will help extend convenient ticketing platforms to our guests.” 16 BoxOffice ® MAY <strong>2016</strong>
Landmark Cinemas is the second-largest motion picture theater exhibition company in Canada, and the 10th-largest in North America. This deal adds an additional 45 theaters and 312 screens to MovieTickets. com, bringing the company’s global footprint to nearly 29,000 screens. NEW DIRECTOR AT FRANKLIN DESIGN n Franklin Design Inc. (FDI), a Mississippi company owned by Pam and Bobby Franklin, has hired Steve Zimmerman as its new director of operations. He will oversee the operations of both Franklin Design Inc. and Franklin Design Int. Inc. Franklin Design has provided design services to the cinema industry for nearly 30 years. “I am excited about the vision that Pam and Bobby have created for Franklin Design Inc.,” said Zimmerman, “and feel I can help to achieve this vision, while also being instrumental in maintaining the quality of products and services that have made Franklin Design a trusted leader in the industry.” “We are pleased to have Steve join our Franklin family,” said Bobby Franklin, company president. “His strengths in building and understanding the relationship values our company embraces is as vital to us as is his wealth of knowledge and experience in what we do in the industry.” RECORD YEAR FOR DCDC n Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition (DCDC), the North American theatrical content distribution organization founded by Warner Bros., Universal, Regal, Cinemark, and AMC, has posted major across-the-board gains in all key categories during its second full year of operation. Additionally, DCDC reported it had made nearly 400,000 deliveries of features and other content, including live and prerecorded events, to theaters nationwide through December 2015. In its first direct year-to-year comparisons, DCDC finished 2015 with double- and triple-percentage increases in every significant category, including the number of screens, exhibitors and major studios, and leading independent content providers. The surge also extends to delivery of features and to special prerecorded and live events. New content-provider customers added in the last year include BY Experience, Bleecker Street, EuropaCorp, Gathr Films, Group 1200 Media, Pure Flix Entertainment, Shorts International, SpectiCast, Tugg, and The Weinstein Company.
