In the recent Independence Day: Resurgence trailer,
returnee Jeff Goldblum intones, “They always go for the
landmarks,” they being, of course, aliens. How many
times can the Golden Gate Bridge be demolished?
Even Ray Harryhausen’s budget-restricted six-armed
octopus destroyed it in 1955’s It Came From Beneath
the Sea. In the final trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse we
see the bad guy, played by Star Wars: The Force
Awakens good guy Oscar Isaac, cause the
destruction of the Sydney Opera House.
In G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the Eiffel
Tower topples only to be rebuilt and
used as a rocket gantry in 2015’s
Tomorrowland. Maybe mankind
should stop building such iconic
structures and keep to strip malls.
Anyhoo … For X-Men: Apocalypse,
Bryan Singer returns to
the director’s chair for a fourth go-round
with the mutants, this time without
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (though his
adamantium talons are glimpsed at the
end of the latest trailer—snikt!).
In this entry of the franchise we meet the
very first mutant—En Sabah Nur, dubbed
Apocalypse by the X-Men, who is reborn after a
thousand years of slumber to do what characters
named Apocalypse are likely to do: take over the
world. Mutant One is helped by four “horsemen”
including Oliva Munn’s Psylocke, featured in the
promos to great effect.
