6 EPANOMI<br />
This picturesque town<br />
(population: 7,500) is situated<br />
25 km SE of <strong>Thessaloniki</strong>. In<br />
the vicinity there are beautiful<br />
beaches, namely Ktima<br />
Karagiozi, Ormos, Palioura,<br />
Ageladariko, Mesimeri and<br />
Potamos; you will also see a<br />
half-sunken wreck of a small<br />
merchant vessel lying there<br />
since 1967. Tsairi (4 km S<br />
of Epanomi) is the location<br />
of a wetland, a refuge for<br />
over 80 species of birds.<br />
Gerovassiliou Wine Museum<br />
is situated 2 km N. and is the<br />
only one of its kind in northern<br />
Greece (for the museum see<br />
p. 80).<br />
How to get there. Take<br />
the buses nos. 70 and 70A<br />
from the Railway Station<br />
Stop during July and August.<br />
Throughout the year board<br />
any one of 69A, 69B, 69E,<br />
69K, 69N, 69R, 69T or 69X<br />
buses at A.S. IKEA station.<br />
If you travel by car, head for<br />
the airport and then follow<br />
Michanionas, Miaouli and<br />
Epanomis country roads.<br />
7 NEA MICHANIONA<br />
A major fishing centre (32<br />
km S of <strong>Thessaloniki</strong>) with<br />
the largest fleet of deep sea<br />
fish boats in Greece! Once a<br />
refugee settlement, it is now a<br />
steadily growing area. The fish<br />
pier building by the picturesque<br />
harbour gets crowded especially<br />
during the early morning hours.<br />
Τhe seafront road is lined with<br />
café-bars and tavernas. Popular<br />
beaches in this area such as<br />
Tourbani and Angelochori have<br />
been awarded the Blue Flag<br />
for their beach quality.<br />
MUST SEE:<br />
7.1 Angelochori.<br />
This small village lies 4 km<br />
N. of Nea Michaniona.<br />
Cape Megalo Emvolo (or<br />
Megalo Karampournou)<br />
affords a wonderful view of<br />
the Olympus massif. It is<br />
worth noticing the particular<br />
architectural structure of the<br />
remaining parts of an ottoman<br />
stronghold, built there in 1884<br />
by German civil engineers;<br />
there is also a lighthouse<br />
reaching a height of 10.50 m.<br />

(1864); and a World War II<br />
gun emplacement. Further<br />
south there are salt marshes<br />
and a wetland where 178<br />
bird species find refuge such<br />
as flamingoes, cormorants,<br />
herons, and black-headed<br />
gulls, to name but a few.<br />
How to get there. Take<br />
the 71 or 71A bus from<br />
the Railway Station Stop.<br />
The route goes through<br />
Angelochori and you will<br />
get off at the N. Michaniona<br />
terminus. Alternatively, bus<br />
lines 02 and 02A will get you<br />
to A.S. IKEA station where you<br />
will board any of the 72, 72A<br />
or 72B bus for N. Michaniona.<br />

Antistasis, Georgikis Scholis<br />
