MACEDONIAN MUSEUM<br />
OF CONTEMPORARY ART<br />
The permanent collection<br />
includes 1,800 works of art<br />
by leading Greek and foreign<br />
artists; so far, it has hosted<br />
more than 100 selected<br />
exhibitions of Greek and<br />
foreign visual artists such<br />
as Tsarouhis, Hadjikyriakos-<br />
Ghika, Tsoklis, Kontoglou,<br />
Psychopedis, Akrithakis,<br />
Mytaras, Lazogkas, Varotsos,<br />
Warhol, R. & S. Delaunay,<br />
Viallat, Hecker, Greenaway,<br />
and Beckmann among others.<br />
The museum library counts<br />
over 2,500 titles of specialised<br />
issues on painting, sculpture,<br />
engraving, architecture and<br />
photography and it has been<br />
credited a number of prominent<br />
publications.<br />
TELOGLION FOUNDATION<br />
OF ART AUTh [Aristotle<br />
University of <strong>Thessaloniki</strong>]<br />
It was founded in 1972,<br />
following a donation of an art<br />
collection by Nestor and Aliki<br />
Telloglou to the A.U.Th.; in the<br />
course of time the collection<br />
grew larger with donations<br />
by artists and collectors. The<br />
Telloglou donation is the<br />
key collection and includes<br />
statuettes of the Hellenistic<br />
period, Corinthian, Hellenistic<br />
and Roman vessels, Persian<br />
miniatures, objects of Arab and<br />
Chinese art (vases, banners,<br />
plates) Thai woodcarved items<br />
as well as works of art by<br />
famous Greek and European<br />
painters and sculptors of the<br />
19 th and 20 th c. It also hosts<br />
temporary exhibitions, a<br />
variety of cultural events and<br />
educational programmes.<br />
MUNICIPAL GALLERY<br />
Over 1,000 works of art<br />
are on display in the gallery<br />
and they are classified in 4<br />
collections as follows: The<br />
most important one is titled<br />
Thessalonian Artists and it<br />
includes pieces of art by local<br />
visual artists referring to the<br />
period from 1898 to 1967<br />
(P. Reggos, N. Fotakis, Chr.<br />
Lefakis, N. Gavriil Pentzikis,<br />
K. Lachas, G. Svoronos among<br />
others); the Modern Greek Art<br />
collection includes works of art<br />
by leading Greek Artists; the<br />
Byzantine and Postbyzantine<br />
Icons collection is related to<br />
the school of <strong>Thessaloniki</strong><br />
and spans 5 centuries (14 th<br />
-19 th c.); and a collection of<br />
360 pieces of art on Greek<br />
Engraving. Retrospective<br />
exhibitions of Greek and<br />
foreign artists are frequently<br />
arranged in collaboration with<br />
art foundations in Greece and<br />
abroad.<br />
GALLERY OF THE<br />
SOCIETY FOR<br />
MACEDONIAN STUDIES<br />
It is housed on the top floor<br />
of the Theatre Building of<br />
the S.M.S. and it is the first<br />
visual arts museum in the city.<br />
It encompasses 300 pieces<br />
of art (painting, sculpture<br />
and engraving) by famous<br />
Greek and foreign artists,<br />
mostly from northern Greece,<br />
who represent the major art<br />
movements of the 20 th c.<br />

It opened to the public in<br />
1989 and has, ever since,<br />
been organising major painting,<br />
sculpture, photography and<br />
architecture exhibitions in<br />
collaboration with other local<br />
educational and cultural<br />
agencies. Events related to<br />
the history of the city and<br />
the greater area also take<br />
place there. The collection<br />
includes approx. 250 pieces<br />
on painting, sculpture, pottery,<br />
mosaics, murals and<br />
engraving.<br />
THESSALONIKI CINEMA<br />
MUSEUM<br />
It was created in 1997<br />
and the opening coincided<br />
with the European Capital<br />
of Culture events which were<br />
hosted by <strong>Thessaloniki</strong> that<br />
year. It is closely related<br />
to the city history, as the<br />
<strong>Thessaloniki</strong> International Film<br />
Festival has been taking place<br />
in the city since 1960 (see p.<br />
108). Exhibits tell the history<br />
of the Greek cinema and are<br />
classified in six timelines,<br />
namely Manakia brothers,<br />
1900-1940, 1940-1960,<br />
1960-1970, 1970-1990,<br />
and 1990 and beyond. Among<br />
the items on display are rare<br />
