One of King’s gifted and talented year 9 students, Neave Bryers, received an award this week
as ‘runner up’ for the Outstanding Geography Student of the Year competition run by Discover
the World Education in conjunction with the Geographical Association (GA). This is a UK wide
competition aimed at recognising and raising high attainment in Geography GCSE students.
Discover the World Education with the WorldWise strand of the Geographical Association
offer an exciting annual award aimed at GCSE Geography students nationwide. continues on page 2
and 3
Students are invited to engage in a decision-making activities linked to
sustainable tourism, as well as providing a personal statement stating
why each candidate is eligible to win the competition. Neave, along with
other GCSE students across the country, entered this competition to win
a once in a lifetime trip to the Azores, a group of volcanic archipelagos in
the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Neave was awarded second place, and was narrowly beaten by a Year 11
student from elsewhere in the UK. This award is given to the students
that show a real enthusiasm for Geography and a commitment
demonstrated throughout the candidate’s entry. Neave’s Geography
teacher Miss Griffiths spoke about Neave’s achievement. “Neave revealed
an incredible talent for Geography, and this is evident by the fact that she
was up against other, more experienced GCSE students and came out as
a more worthy candidate for the award. This is a testament to Neave’s
ability, as well as a tribute to the high standard of teaching that occurs
throughout the academy that she, and all others receive. Neave showed
great endeavour throughout her application, and I hope that this inspires
our Geography students to take part in the award in future years where
they can match, or even exceed the high bar set by Neave.”

Another cohort of students were rewarded with a trip to the new King´s
Academy building last week and were amazed to see how their new academy is
progressing. Finishing touches are now being applied to some of the
classrooms with highlights of the King’s Leadership Academy colours appearing
on walls and doors.
The 3G pitch is now also complete and ready for our students to put it to good
use when they arrive through the doors in June. The cavernous empty space
that once was the beginning of our sports hall is now looking fit for purpose,
with flooring fitted and painted and only the interior walls left to go – not
forgetting the exciting appearance of the new basketball hoops! With less than 3
months’ time left before we move to the new premises, we can now start to
visualise how the finished King’s Leadership Academy will look. Credimus!

King’s Leadership Academy prides itself on being the
nation’s School of Character. All of our students aspire
to be successful members of society, with high
aspirations and even higher motivation to achieve
them. Project Character is a programme to encourage
all students to flourish and be the best they can be.
Students engage in a variety of events and activities
throughout the year, which will lead to engagement in
school and the development of the highest of
aspirations. Project Character provides students with
more time and support through both extra curricular
guidance delivered by King’s staff, and outdoor
education, delivered by trusted partners of the school,
to achieve in this crucial area of King’s life.
In addition, students are mentored by a member of
staff who will meet with them fortnightly to discuss
targets. By taking these steps, we hope to guide all
students to a place where they get the most out of
education and themselves.
At King’s we give our students the opportunity to
experience environments outside of the Warrington
area. Trips to universities, outdoor residential visits,
including Brathay in Year 7 and 8, as well as
participation in the Duke of Edinburgh award from
Year 9, not only broaden student horizon’s, but
prepare them for life after secondary school. To
support and provide guidance in their pursuit of
achievement in ASPIRE, it is important for students to
further practice their teamwork, leadership and
communication skills during outdoor education
residentials.
As part of their work in Project Character, students are
required to attend a two day residential in Yorkshire,
practising their skills. This also doubles as an
opportunity to celebrate our excellent pupils, with pupils
recognised as outstanding examples of character
throughout the school invited to Yorkshire as a reward
for their continued efforts in ASPIRE and our character
education.
Project Character is a step forward for all students in
pursuit of excellence in every aspect of their school life,
as well as an opportunity to celebrate the pupils who
consistently achieve the highest standards. With the first
residential taking place this weekend, the pupils are
excited to begin working towards their goals. We look
forward to seeing how they get on!
On Thursday 24th March, Hanover Trafalgar took the
limelight with their turn to raise money for ‘Transformation
for Veterans’. Five daredevil teachers were nominated by
students to take part in a ‘Nando’s Chicken Wing Roulette’
Mr Barker, Mr Garrity, Mr Ierston, Mr Slater and Miss Gallego
were the unlucky (or lucky) ones nominated by pupils to
take part in this fun challenge. Ten chicken wings with a
variety of spice were laid in front of the teachers, with two
having an even spicier sauce added, to make things even
more exciting! Poor Mr Slater couldn't take the heat and was
the first to be hit with the ultra spicy chicken wing as his
eyes welled up! In the second round it was Mr Garrity who
got the super spicy wing, joining Mr Slater in the queue for
milk to cool down!
I am really proud of all the effort Hanover Trafalgar put into
this event. An even bigger thank you goes to all who paid to
come and support your teachers, and raise money for such
a good cause!
Hanover Vitoria also did a fantastic job promoting and
organising Pie the Teacher, which took place on Friday
18th March. Mr Robinson, Mr Garrity and Mr Bowden
were all excellent sports, and well and truly did their bit
for charity!
With pies priced at 50p each, as a housewe raised over
£20 in just half an hour, which is fantastic! Thanks to all
staff who took part for the Warrington Veterans charity,
and pupils who raised the money in such a short period
of time. Well done!
Not to be outshone by the fellow house groups, Hanover
Waterloo held a King’s Bake off!
Best in show went to Hannah Dobson in Year 8, York
Crusade. A huge well done to her for her amazing entry.
Congratulations also to all who entered, the standard
was impeccable and it was an extremely close
competition to judge,.
Despite the loss against Halifax, Mr. Garrity still put in a excellent
performance and received the man of the match award from the
national rugby league press for Pilkington Recs.
The game was a close contest up until the 30 minute mark when
Halifax’s superior fitness levels started to show. It was an unique
occasion for Mr. Garrity and he would like to thank all the King’s
staff and also year 10 students who attended the game and
supported him throughout the match.
Last week the bingo book challenge was launched to promote reading
for pleasure throughout the school. Students at King’s were
encouraged to complete a challenge card by reading different books
relating to a grid on their own personal bingo card. Students read
books that had been made into a movie, books that had a red cover or
books that had a number in the title.
After over a week of reading, two winning book worms emerged!
Congratulations to Hannah Dobson and Grace Bennett who won two
amazing Easter book hampers.

the new building we are offering parents/carers the
opportunity to purchase an engraved paving brick that will
form part of the footpath leading to the front entrance.
King’s narrowly missed out on the opportunity to play
at Warrington's Halliwell Jones stadium by 1 point!
King’s played in a round robin 9-a-side rugby league
tournament hosted at Cardinal Newman where they
faced Great Sankey and Culcheth High Schools. The
lads narrowly lost the first game against Great
Sankey despite being much the better team. Kane
Hackett, Bobby Geritas, Matthew Jenkins and
Spencer Richardson had a great go forward and
made many metres throughout the match. However
some slight mistakes in defence allowed Great
Sankey to score in the final seconds and win 5-4.
King’s then regathered and demonstrated why they
are a talented rugby team with some outstanding
rugby on show especially from Toby Stevens. They
beat Culcheth 4-1 in their second game, with Kane
Hackett scoring a hat trick and Joe Henshaw scoring
a try which was described as “the try of the
tournament” by the Warrington Wolves’ staff. Lewis
Groves and Shaun Walmsley endeavoured
throughout the fixture and were menaces in both
defence and attack.
Finally a big well done to Lewis Pike, Callum Cooper
and Ryan Carty for making their rugby debuts for
King’s. The boys never looked out of place and are
now a big part of the Year 7 rugby team.
Despite finishing 2nd the lads knew they could have
gone all the way and need to work on their defence.
Throughout the tournament their attack was on fire
scoring the most tries, a total of 8 tries over 2 games.
Reminder:
Rugby training is held every Thursday 4pm-5pm.
Huge congratulations to the Year 7 basketball team chance for the rest of the game. Precision shooting
on the fantastic 26-4 winning result against a well from Will Newman, Toby Stevens, Bobby Geritas and
trained Great Sankey team, Excellent leadership from Kane Hackett made sure the win never looked in
Kane Hackett, Bobby Geritas and Toby Stephens doubt. Lewis Pike showed lots of endeavour in his
ensured our team always pushed themselves from work for the team from working up and down the
start to finish. Brilliant defending from Oliver Nulty, court to gaining offensive rebounds. Well done to the
Grace Bennett and Jai Waltham made certain Great entire team who are still unbeaten.
Sankey only scored in the first quarter and didn't have
Here at King’s Leadership Academy we all work
together to help with any problems our students
may have inside or outside of school.
There are many reasons why young people
decide not to talk about incidents, including not
wanting to talk face to face, lack of confidence,
peer pressure, or fear of someone seeing them
talking to staff, or being seen in the schools office
to name just a few.
As a result King’s uses The SHARP System
(Student Help Advice Reporting Page System)
which allows our students to report any incidents
which occur within the school and local
community anonymously and without fear. This
is available to all King’s students. If you wish to
contact us, through Miss Aldridge or Mrs
Lawrence, you don't have to leave your details.
Please take the time to look through the pages on
our website and if you feel that you can help to
keep our school a safe, friendly and fun place to
be you can access the SHARP system by clicking
the picture below.
Have you got a problem? Need a hand?
No-one to turn to? No-one listening?
Don't know what to do?
If you have any problems at school, home, with your family or
friends or in the local community, please don't suffer in silence.
Drop us a line and we will do what ever we can to help, if we
can’t help then we will know someone who can.
