ANNUAL CHURCH BBQ FOR ST ALBAN’S DAY The 19 th June was a very special celebratory day for our church. Five people were confirmed by Bishop Robert Innes, but he was also able to see how we celebrate our own patron saint – Alban of England, Albany, Albion. We all know the story of the Roman soldier who helped a poor Christian priest escape death by the occupying Roman soldiers, by exchanging his uniform with the cassock of the priest. The soldier had listened to the priest and had accepted Christianity. He was killed the next day by his own people, a death which is now seen as the first Christian martyrdom in Albion – as the Romans called England. It also means “white” (probably after the skin colour of the natives) so the saint was named St Alban, and is depicted wearing a white cassock. On Sunday 19 th June there were quite a few white legs and arms to be seen at the BBQ celebration in St Alban’s house as the day was sunny and bright. There were also a number who had given up their precious time to buy provisions and all but martyred themselves over the hot barbeque and the kitchen sink afterwards. By all accounts it was worth it all. The Bishop and the “Barbeque Boys”. Bishop Robert finally able to relax after his first confirmation service in St Alban’s, and the BBQ boys worked hard cooking burgers and sausages. Jean, Judy, Maria, Mary and Phil deserve grateful thanks for all the shopping and planning, the cooking and setting out, but not least for the cleaning up afterwards, so that the Council could meet with the Bishop before the afternoon was ended. A busy weekend for all concerned but a happy one for many. ~ 15 ~
