SIDESMEN AT WORK Every Sunday, rain or shine, two Sidesmen are at work. This wonderful group of volunteers is elected each year by the Annual Church Meeting. Their duties are many, varied and vital. (The checklist of duties fills an entire A4 sheet.) They arrive early, lay out the service sheets and hymns books and make sure the church is ready for the congregation. They check the inside and outside of the church for security and ensure emergency exits are free and open. Eddie Wales and Anne Christina Christensen, part of our valuable team of Sidespeople. then can they drink a well-deserved cup of coffee. ~ 28 ~ They invite children to attend Sunday School and call them down for communion. During the service they kindly suggest that tourists come back later – they close the door only when they are at communion themselves. They are the people who pass around the collection pouches, bring them to the altar for the blessing. They ensure the orderly running of communion. After the service they collect the books again, sort the pew sheets, pack away the Service Sheets, count and record the collection and only These are the people whom visitors and newcomers first meet. They are smiling and welcoming, efficient and practical when the church is suddenly busier than expected. All this to draw attention to the invaluable work our Sidesmen and women do for us throughout the year. They deserve high praise and grateful thanks. CCC
FAREWELL TO HER MAJE<strong>ST</strong>Y’S AMBASSADOR, HER EXCELLENCY, VIVIEN LIFE. Like name, like nature, the British Ambassador, Vivien Life, loves life and all its pleasures. She has been a regular worshipper at St Alban’s throughout her four year posting to Denmark and will be sadly missed by many who have enjoyed her friendly informality and lovely sense of humour. Not one to stand on ceremony, Vivien will, whenever she can, stay and chat over coffee after the service and attends as many church functions as her busy schedule allows. In her smart picnic jacket she drinks the Loyal Toast with the Chaplain at the Patron’s Picnic on 12 June. It was an event she very much wanted to attend and she made a speech in honour of HM The Queen which illustrated her deep admiration of our monarch, outlining some of the major events Queen Elizabeth has witnessed in her 90 years. The Ambassador has attended quite a range of events both formal and informal at St Alban’s; she has met VIPs including Queen Margrethe II and always read the lesson at Remembrance Day and Christmas time. But she is also able to switch off and enjoy a picnic, a St Alban’s Day BBQ or a Pentecost lunch. We will miss her smiling friendliness and wish her all the very best of success and happiness in her next posting – probably working on EU solutions in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Her experience will be greatly valued. She will certainly be missed here. CCC ~ 29 ~ ~
