JULY 15, 2016 24 COMMUNITYLINK Young Indian prepares for Miss Universe New Zealand Venkat Raman venkat@indiannewslink.co.nz Beauty pageants have always excited our young woman and Simrat Gill of Auckland is no exception. A health and fitness enthusiast, she hopes that three-day camp leading to the selection of Miss Universe New Zealand title on September 3, 2016 at Sky City Theatre would be exciting, entertaining and rewarding. She is due to attend a ‘Miss Universe Retreat’ in the Philippines from July 22 to August 1, 2016. Simrat is in search of a Bronze Sponsor to promote her candidacy (at $595 plus GST) and winning the title would enable her to raise awareness on mental health issues, which she believes need to be on priority in today’s troubled world. Health & Fitness Her employment at Health TRX Limited, a pioneer in E-Health with a focus on mental health issues in New Zealand and involvement in Australia, US, Canada and UK, provides Simrat with a global perspective of the health issues confronting humanity. She rightly believes that good health has no substitute. As well as working out at the gym, practicing Yoga, boxing classes and going for long walks, Simrat enjoys dancing and good music- everything in fact that makes her an eligible candidate to seek the Miss Universe title. Distinct qualifications Simrat has the distinction of having pursued higher qualifications in three major New Zealand Universities – Otago (Auckland, where she completed the foundation year in Medicine), Massey (Auckland, where she gained her graduate degree in Psychology and Human Nutrition) and University of Auckland (Masters in Bioscience Enterprise, as a part of which she completed an industry based thesis primarily focused on brain and mental health), The annual Miss Universe New Zealand Contest, ‘reinvented’ in 2013 when veteran TV producer Nigel Godfrey and Lucire publisher Jack Yan, took over the Miss Universe New Zealand franchise and converted it into an exciting new competition. Auckland show to feature rare hits Venkat Raman venkat@indiannewslink.co.nz It would be once again be an occasion to take a few steps back in time and revel in the melodious songs of the yesteryears as one of the most dedicated musical duo put together an event to remember. Dharmesh Patel and Shyamal Raval of ‘Swaranjali,’ a group of music-lovers are organising the programme from 630 pm at Dorothy Winstone Centre, Auckland Girls Grammar School on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Called, ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya,’ the show will feature a number of local artistes including Arif Ziya, Arpita Chanda, Dharmesh Patel, Jayasree, Jyoti Rajesh, Hemant Shirsat, Nishtha Raval, Shyamal Raval and Vibha Trivedi. Hemant Thaker, one of the most popular instrumentalists (Keyboard) of our community is a major source of strength for ‘Swaranjali.’ As well as helping in the selection of songs, he has also been vested with a number of other responsibilities. Hemant and five others have formed, ‘Gurus of Groove,’ exclusively for performing at the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards held at Sky City Convention Centre in November every year. Musical Journey Mr Raval said that ‘Swaranjali’ symbolised a musical journey of evergreen hits of songs featured in Hindi films several decades ago. Since our debut with ‘A Tribute to O P Nayyar’ in June 2009, we have been encouraged by a large number of friends and music enthusiasts to organise shows that feature songs that are generally not heard on the New Zealand musical circuit. ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’ has taken some time in coming but we are confident that it would appeal to our people.,” he said. Mr Patel said that ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’ would have a perfect blend of songs which are popular not only today but will also stay as hits for generations to come. “We have conscientiously tried to include those songs which rarely performed in Auckland. We are confident that the audience will love them,” he said. Explaining the six-year absence, he said that he and his friends were determined to Shyamal Raval make ‘Swaranjali’ resonate with evergreen melodies, bringing joy and memories to the old and the spirit of a bygone era to the young. Finest Compositions Guests at the show can expect to listen to the compositions of many maestros who have immortalised their works along with the voices of singers, most of who are no longer with us. Some of them would be such great composers as Roshan, Madan Mohan, Shankar Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman and Rahul Dev Burman to mention a few. Among the voices that would be recalled with emotion would be that of Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor and many others. Some of the songs which we understand would be rendered at the show are ‘Hum The Woh Thi Aur’ (from film ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ released in 1959); Dil Ki Girah Kholdo’ (‘Raat Aur Din’, 1967), ‘Nazar Na Lag Jaaye’ (Night in London, 1967), ‘Bechaara Dil Kya Kare’ (‘Kushboo’, 1975) and ‘Aisa Sama Na Hota’ (‘Zameen Aasman’ 1984). You must really have a desire to make it work, says Ashwini Maharaj, our Model of the Fortnight. That statement would reveal the fact that the 27-year-old Fijian beauty has a passion for modelling, fashion and glamour. Arriving in New Zealand to pursue her studies in Business Management, she is now a Credit Controller at a commercial organisation, but seized the opportunity when a photographer captured her attention and offered a profile shoot. Passion for fashion Ashwini said that she decided to step into modelling world and fitness and healthy eating habits is very important. “I am a freelance makeup artist and hairstylist. I enjoy long walks on beaches, cooking and spending time with friends and families,” she said. Ashwini has worked with local photographers to gain experience. She participated in Miss Bikini New Zealand 2016 at which she was one of the ten finalists and won the Best Custom Award. “I designed the Award,” she said with justifiable pride. Ashwini hopes to participate in a local pageant, she believes would extend a platform to reach out to the youth and tell them,” No matter what size, nationality or colour, you are important. Embrace yourself, love yourself and never be afraid to put yourself out there. Don’t let dreams be just dreams.” Ashwini is grateful to her family and friends for their support and encouragement. “I believe that in order for one to succeed in life it is important to believe in yourself and with determination and dedication anything is possible,” she said.
