Nomination period for
City Council begins
Submitted by the City of
Malibu
The nomination period
for the election of the
Malibu City Council began
Monday, July 18 and will
run until Aug. 12, according
to a City press release.
Those who want to be
elected to the council will
have to retrieve, fill out and
submit all the necessary
paperwork within that time
frame, said Heather Glaser,
acting City clerk.
A total of three council
seats are available in the
coming election. Two of
them, held by Joan House
and John Sibert, are termed
out, meaning those two positions
are guaranteed to
be filled by new members,
Glaser said. The third seat,
held currently by Mayor
Pro Tem Skylar Peak, is
open, but Peak told the
Malibu Surfside News that
he intends to run for reelection.

held on Nov. 8, the first to
coincide with the statewide
general election after the
City Council changed the
election date in an effort
to increase voter participation.
“Malibu residents care
deeply about the matters
that impact our community,
and participating in
the election is one of the
most important ways to
make their voice and vision
heard,” Mayor Lou La
Monte said. “Unfortunately,
we still have low voter
participation. By changing
the election date, we hope
to make it more convenient
for Malibu residents to participate
in the democratic
process.”
If any of the three incumbents
fail to file their
paperwork, the nomination
period can be extended to
Aug. 17.
In May 2015, the Council
voted to consolidate
the City elections with the
statewide general election
in November of even years.
The Council urges all eligible
Malibu voters to visit
the City’s elections web

org/elections for information
on important dates,
voter registration, voteby-mail
ballots, and candidates.
