ecome properly engaged in that process, the ego will certainly go to hell. When your
mind is focused on the final desire for reality, there is less and less room for the ego.
Finally, the I-thought resolves itself into its source and the ego has nowhere to go.
5.24 "Unless you leave the body-mind, you can't be He."
The important question is always "Where is my sense of self, my sense of identity?" Am
I identified with the concerns of the body-mind or am I thinking only of the eternal Self?
Leaving the body-mind does not mean renouncing everyday life for the sake of sitting
and meditating somewhere, but to turn away from the wordly life internally. Wherever
the heart goes, the thoughts will follow.
5.25 "Forget the ego and you won't ever feel any sadness."
Sometimes someone will ask "What is the purpose of Self-realization?" This question is
rather like asking "What is the purpose of happiness?" Self-realization means the end of
all sadness because it involves the death of the ego, which is the source of sadness. You
rediscover the source of happiness as your own being, right now. The ego, with its
expectations and demands, its complaints and criticism, was distracting your attention
from the fact that you were already free from sadness and sorrow.
5.26 "The ego is such a dirty, nonsense thing. It makes all the trouble and
confusion in the world."
What is the ego, that it can be the cause of so much trouble? One definition is that it is the
strong conviction that you are a separate individual. If you think that you are separate in a
world of separate individuals, you create for yourself a world of competition, not
cooperation, and your strongest instinct is to preserve and protect what you consider to be
your own interests and the interests of those whom you identify yourself with. If you look
at human society, from the level of the family up to the level of nations, you will see that
it is organized on that basis.
It is not a bad thing to love yourself, if you love yourself in the right way, but loving
yourself as opposed to others will produce bad results because it is exclusive and
divisive, and that is a denial of the way things are in reality. Self-love that arises naturally
from the recognition of your true nature as universal consciousness is a very positive
force for good because that love is love that is without any object. Therefore it includes
everything. In fact when we love anyone or anything, it is really the Self that is loving
and the Self that is being loved. In the Brihandaranyaka Upanishad, it says:
It is not for the sake of itself, my beloved, that anything whatever is esteemed, but for the sake of the Self.
5.27 "Mind will never allow you to go to the reality because its death is
there."
