"Who am I, really?" finally appears and from that spring, the water of understanding
begins to flow. In its own time, the spring becomes a flood that submerges the thought of
the separate ego.
5.30 "Rama himself became Ravanna. Ravanna doesn't exist so how can
he kill him?"
In the epic myth of the Ramayana, the demon-king Ravanna represents the ego. He is
illusive and hard to kill because he is actually an aspect of Rama, the Self. Everything is
the Self. There is no second thing, and so Rama becomes Ravanna when his true nature is
concealed from himself by ignorance. As long as Rama splits himself into two and
identifies himself with Ravanna, he cannot kill him. He cuts off one of the demon's heads
and another one springs up to replace it! Rama first has to understand that reality is one
and that he is that one. Then the arrow flies to Ravanna's heart and kills him. The sense of
"I" returns to the Self, where it belongs, and, like a piece of salt falling into the ocean, the
individual consciousness merges with the universal consciousness.
5.31 "The ego is like the barren woman's son. It doesn't exist, but still you
say `I've done it.'"
In the end, the ego has one fundamental weakness, one flaw which it can never
overcome, which is that it doesn't exist! The "problem" of the ego is an apparent problem,
not a real one. The sense of separation that is the principal effect of belief in the ego can
go away in a moment, if the reality of the Self is fully known. Your natural state is
happiness, free from any sense of separation, free from wanting and dissatisfaction, free
from ignorance and doubt. How fortunate is the aspirant, who, at the end of a long search,
finds the true guru, the one who shows what real freedom is and who provides the means
to realize it!
