24. NO-BOUNCE TENNIS
Objective
To improve reflex action at the net, footwork, dexterity, and confidence in
attacking the net. Players learn to create and recognize opportunities to attack
and be successful at the net.
Description
This twist will sharpen players’ attacking skills and force them to approach
the net, because they can’t score a point unless they hit a volley successfully.
Execution
Player A is positioned on the service line in the center, and player B is positioned
on the opposite service line in the center. Player A starts the point by drop hitting
the ball to player B. Each player serves 4 points or an entire regular-scoring
game. The ball can bounce only on the serve. Players win points only by hitting
a volley, swinging volley, or overhead. Servers switch after every game or every
fourth point, and the game is played to 16 no-bounce points.
Variation
Use QuickStart orange and green balls as a warm-up or to slow the pace of
the drill. Players position themselves on the baseline, serving in the regular
overhand way to start the point. They can play doubles using this technique.
Tip
Serve-and-volley is an aggressive tactic that helps players get quickly up to
the net to end and win the point. Quick hands and quick feet produce crisp,
sweet volleys.
