Brewing good business
Festival brings area
vendors, community
together for a night
Jason Maholy
Freelance Reporter
Twenty-four vendors selling
beer, wine, spirits and
food; four bands providing
the soundtrack to a sunkissed
day in the park; and
upwards of 500 smiling people
eating, drinking and having
good times with friends
and family.
That’s a snapshot of the
Mokena Chamber of Commerce’s
13th annual Food,
Wine & Brew Festival, which
went off without a hitch Saturday,
Sept. 10, despite a
morning shower that passed
through the area. The event
was held for the first time at
Main Park, which acted as an
alternative site because of the
ongoing Mokena Community
Park District project at
the usual fest grounds on the
historic McGovney-Yunker
Homestead, at the northwest
corner of LaPorte and
Schoolhouse roads.
The Food, Wine & Brew
Festival showcased primarily
southwest suburban restaurants
and craft brewers;
and the menu included –
among other delights – seafood
jambalaya and shrimp
rolls, chocolate truffle-flavored
and green tea-infused
vodkas, and dozens of wines
and beers. Among the featured
vendors were Harvest
Room from Palos Heights,
Original Island Shrimp
House from Palos Park, Oak
Forest-based Warrior Vodka,
and Baderbrau, a craft brewery
co-owned by Mokena
resident Jason Lubovich.
“We try to put together an
event so that we can show
off the different food, wine
and brew vendors in the
glass of white wine for a customer.
southwest suburbs to the
people of Mokena, so we
can bring people to Mokena
and see what the restaurants
and breweries have to offer,”
said Mokena Chamber Preident-elect
Troy Griffiths.
“It’s also a good event for
the people of the community
to enjoy some good music
and good food and drinks
and have a good day.”
Chamber President Dennis
Buxbaum said the festival’s
main objective falls in line
