Proceeds from the festival – yielded by the admission price of $30 per person at the gate – are reinvested into the Mokena business community, as well as service organizations, including the Mokena Lions Club and the Cancer Support Center, Buxbaum said. “Our focus has always been to give back to the community, do stuff for the community and give the community something to do,” he explained. “What this does is give us the opportunity to give back further, to help out. We give back, and that’s our whole focus – to create a strong community that will support the business community.” Buxbaum noted proceeds from the festival’s annual raffle drawing will go toward a college scholarship for a Lincoln-Way Central High School student, and has been renamed this year in honor of Del Yunker, who served as Mokena’s fire chief for 12 years and was a member of the Chamber’s board of directors. Yunker and his widow Joan used to sell tickets for the raffle drawing, for which the grand prize was at one time a wheelbarrow full of various bottles of alcohol. The main draw for attendees, however, was the beer and wine and other beverages, which flowed generously from taps and bottles into 6-ounce glass craft beer samplers. Rich and Stacia Boskey and their friends Nicki Garrett and Ken D’Andrea came from Manhattan to sample what the fest had to offer. Rich took a sniff of his Marsh Tacky stout from One Trick Pony before putting the glass to his lips and getting a taste. “I’m more of a stout guy,” he said. “I like the coffee beers, things like that. I’m actually big on the milk stouts, so anything that can get close to that I’m happy with.” Meanwhile, his other half, Stacia, was sipping One Trick’s Shepard, a Belgian Dubbel-style brew. “I like that one better,” she said of the stout. “But they’re both really good. If we’re drinking beer, I like the dark ones – if you can see through it it’s not worth drinking.” In Rich’s left hand was a glass containing a 12-year bourbon from Harvest Room. Garrett and D’Andrea were at the fest for the first time. “I like hoppy stuff so I usually go with the IPA, Belgians,” Garrett said who sampled One Trick’s Very Different, a wheat IPA. “This is very hoppier and my style – a little bit more citrusy, I would say, than other hops. It’s very delicious, though, very smooth.” One Trick Pony, 17851 Chappel Ave. in Lansing, is a product of failure, according to owner Mark Kocal. The tap room opened in 2012, and after four years of offering only draught brews, they will soon be selling bottles and cans. Jason Lubovin of craft brewery Baderbrau, too, shared his experience of opening up his own taproom. “We’re excited to be open,” Lubovin of Mokena said. “We’re finally brewing where we want to brew, the beers we want to brew. But an officer received minor injuries in the pursuit, according to an interview later the same day with Orland Park Police Cmdr. John Keating. Around 10:57 a.m. Sept. 8, James & Sons Fine Jewelers, 15234 S. LaGrange Road, reported a suspicious circumstance. An off-duty officer working security was approached by a male, later identified as Coker, that attempted to lure him out of the store, police said. Coker was thought to be concealing a miniature sledgehammer with a wooden handle, Keating added. The release noted it was under his pants pocket, being held in his right hand. According to the press release, Coker also had a white cloth item over his shoulder. He reportedly walked around the store and told employees he was looking for men’s gold chains. The man reportedly had a conversation with the offduty officer, attempting to divert his attention outside, and the suspect left and met with three other men in the parking lot, Keating said. They met near the vehicle in which they all arrived, a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, according to the press release. It reportedly was at that point the off-duty officer called the department for assistance. The male who approached the officer and three other subjects waiting outside the store ran from the area when approached by uniformed officers, according to the first alert. They reportedly ran eastbound across La- Grange Road, ignoring officers’ commands to stop. Three of the four males were apprehended immediately, while one remained at large for a short time but was apprehended by 1:05 p.m., according to the second alert. Police said one man was found in a grassy playground area south of Center School, one near Barnes & Noble, another outside Dick’s Sporting Goods and another inside Dick’s Sporting Goods, all in Orland Park. Police said the men were planning to use hammers to break the glass cases and steal jewelry. They stole the Jeep around 10 a.m. from the driveway of a home in Mokena , according to Orland Park police. “One officer was hurt climbing a fence near the school,” Keating said. “He suffered some abrasions and a puncture.” Keating said the officer was transported to Palos Community Hospital, where he was treated and released. Keating said no members of the general public, or the suspects, were hurt during the pursuit, and noted the injuries to the officer were “nothing serious.” Keating said police called for support from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office’s K9 Unit to make sure none of the suspects dropped weapons or anything else dangerous in the area. “They conducted an article search that turned up negative,” he explained. The press release noted no other weapons were displayed or recovered at the scene. A miniature sledgehammer reportedly was recovered from the jewelry store investigation scene, along with a vehicle, according to Keating. The press release noted Coker dropped the sledgehammer near the Jeep. Mokena Police Chief Steve Vaccaro said the vehicle was reported stolen around 10:20 a.m. Sept. 8 from the 10600 block of LaPorte Road. Keating noted nothing actually was stolen from the store, thanks to the off-duty officer quickly becoming suspicious and making the call for backup. Keating noted the store involved always has security present. All four men were held pending a bond hearing Sept. 10 at the Cook County Criminal Division Courthouse.
