A number of mobile messages are sent about maternal and child nutrition and<br />

health, particularly in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life and emphasize the effect<br />

that nutrition has on a child’s cognitive development.<br />

REACH<br />

The first phase of the mNutrition project has reached more than 1.5 million<br />

subscribers in Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania. To date, GAIN has supported the<br />

embedding of nutrition messages in five health and agriculture mobile messaging<br />

services across three countries: Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.<br />

Although it was initially expected that StartSmart would reach just 10,000<br />

users, the MXit chat channel, a popular South African messaging platform, was<br />

exceptionally effective at speaking to the target audience’s needs, reaching over<br />

128,000 users in South Africa to date. Young people are the primary users of the<br />

platform, attracted by airtime rewards for registration.<br />
