SUMMARY
Schools Promoting Learning Achievement through Sanitation and Hygiene
(SPLASH), a four-year program launched in 2011 by the global environmental
health project WASHplus, helped to improve health and learning among primary
school students in Zambia’s Eastern Province. SPLASH worked within the
Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education as well
as other ministries. By improving sustainable access to safe water and adequate
sanitation, SPLASH helped to improve the health, learning, and educational
performance of primary school children and their teachers. The project also
encouraged adoption of better hygiene and health practices in targeted schools
and communities.
SPLASH reached 246,000
children, their teachers,
and their parents with
a comprehensive WASH
facility improvement
and hygiene education
program.
