All organizations fundraise in
order to finance needed repairs,
upgrades, additions and the like.
St. George Orthodox Church is
no different. What is different is
the group of young women who
are working to raise funds for
renovations to the aging church
so that older parishioners can
once again have access to the
facility.
“One of our immediate
problems is that our elders can
no longer maneuver the stairs,
limiting their participation in
church activities,” Pastor's wife
and a member of the Ladies of
St. George, Erin Kimmett said.
“That’s very sad and needs to be
fixed."
The Ladies of St. George is a
group of eight women who have
been members of this church
since childhood. They were
also childhood friends, most
of whom grew up in the same
neighborhood of South Norwood.
All of these women work
outside the home and volunteer
their time to enrich the lives of
those around them.
That becomes obvious the
more one talks with the group.
These young women don’t
just talk the talk, as the saying
goes, they are fully engaged in
making positive things happen
for their church community.
They have worked on many
fundraisers together including a
gala in 2015 where they raised
$50,000. And, while they don’t
always agree on details, they
work well together making decisions
on a consensus basis.
Updates on the
Norwood Food Pantry
Staffing changes
and a successful
cereal drive to start.
by Renee Plant
Exciting events heated up the
Norwood Ecumenical Food Pantry
this summer.
The organization opened its
doors in 1989 at the Grace Episcopal
Church, 150 Chapel St. Since
then, volunteers have worked to
service more than 2,500 families,
and currently serve more than 350
families in Norwood and Westwood.
From the time of the organization’s
inception, former Executive
Director Ruth Taegar was a
key component in ensuring the
day-to-day operations at the pantry
ran smoothly. Taegar recently
retired from her position, and was
honored for her efforts at the Norwood
4th of July parade this year
where the theme was community
spirit and volunteerism.
“Ruth dedicated nearly 30
years, and it’s taken many people
to fill her shoes,” Norwood Food
Pantry Chair of the Board Cindy
Zafft said. “We are currently working
to diffuse the work Ruth did
among multiple volunteers.”
Two co-directors, Claudia
Mackey and Nancy Maier, have
been appointed to fill Taeger’s former
position - a job Zafft described
as both consuming and rewarding.
“It’s a very demanding job,
which a lot of people may not realize,”
Zafft said. “Over the phone,
we collect information about individuals
and their needs in their
homes. However, there’s also the
physical aspect of moving and delivering
the food, and that can get
pretty exhausting.”
The act of moving food means
not only organizing within the
pantry, but also delivering food to
the clients who are unable to make
it to the pantry during the pantry
hours on Saturday mornings.
These deliveries are made exclusively
by volunteers.
“There are a number of opportunities
here for anyone in
the community looking to get involved,”
Zafft said. “People think
of helping clients on Saturdays,
IDEA
continued from page 1
What is notable, is that they have
an obvious love and respect for
one another. No one wants the
limelight, and everyone’s efforts
are valued.
Two years ago, the group realized
they would not be able to
make the major renovations the
church needs by holding small
fundraisers. They needed 'a big
idea.' Something that would continue
to bring in revenue long after
the event was over.
Growing up, each woman
was positively influenced by her
grandmother, so after numerous
brainstorming sessions they decided
to create something from
the kitchen. The winning idea was
a Middle Eastern salad dressing.
Each brought in her grandmother’s
recipes and after many variations
were tried and tweaked, they
settled on the one that reminded
each of them of their heritage
and had the ‘fresh taste’ they were
after.
They used their mix on the salads
they served for church lunches;
people loved it and asked for the
recipe. They did blind taste tests
and tried the dressing out on local
restaurant owners to find out if it
had mass appeal. Each step of the
way they were met with encouragement.
But the journey was not easy.
Trying to find a commercial
source to mix the spices in bulk
and to package them generated
many rejections. Savory Spice
Shop of Denver, CO, a small family
business, was impressed with
their mission and agreed to help.
And the project moved on.
Parishioner Nancy Kelly Jones
donated her time and talent to develop
their branding materials.
“Our grandparents settled here
and built this church," Campbell
said. "We have a great respect
for what they accomplished and
wanted to do something to honor
them.”
So it was relatively easy for
the group to agree on the name
for their product. Sittee’s Savory
Kitchen, Middle Eastern Salad
Dressing.
Their mission statement says,
"Sittee is 'my grandmother'" – one
of countless women who, as the
backbone of our community, used
their culinary talents to help build
and sustain our church. Sittee’s
Savory Kitchen honors these beloved
women and their legacy by
giving all proceeds to the Building
Fund.”
Sales officially kicked off at
Norwood Day where they gave
out samples and received great
feedback with comments like
‘bright,’ ‘fresh,’ and ‘light.’ They
sold all of their inventory in very
short time.
They plan to start selling at
Farmers’ Markets in the near future
and will work toward an increasingly
wider distribution. They
also have their first distributor. As
of September 17, Ramblin Rose
Cottage Vintage Home and Garden
Shop, at the Winsmith Mill
Market, 61 Endicott St., in Norwood,
will stock Sittee’s Middle
Eastern salad dressing. Two spice
packets are packaged in a one-pint
Mason-style jar that can be used
to prepare the dressing. The cost is
$6.99 per jar. Each jar comes with
two recipes, one called Simple &
Delicious, the other Authentic.
For more information, additional
recipes and to order on-line, go to
www.SitteesSavoryKitchen.com.
Kimmett says, “Our parish is
known for making anyone who
walks in the door family,” Kimmett
said. Hospitality, acceptance,
love, church and family are all
intertwined in this community.
The Sittee’s of the Ladies of St.
George would be very proud of
their granddaughters’ endeavors.
Sponsored by Norwood League of Women Voters
“Learn the ABCs of the CPA” is a forum designed to
help Norwood’s voting public gather information about the
Community Preservation Act (CPA). Question 5, is on the
ballot for the November 8 election. This event will take place
Wednesday, October 19, 7 p.m., in the Norwood Police and
Fire Station, Community Room, located at 136 Nahatan St.
The League has arranged a panel of speakers to provide
information about the benefits and negative sides of adopting
the law, how the surcharge will be assessed to residents,
and how the CPA has evolved in a neighboring community,
which adopted the CPA three years ago. Each speaker will
present information, and there will be a question and answer
period following the presentations.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, political
organization founded in 1920 – the year that women were
granted the right to vote. The purposes of the League of
Women Voters are twofold: (1) Voter Service: to promote
informed, active citizen participation in government; and
(2) Inform and Educate: to influence public policy through
education and advocacy, and to take positions on substantive
issues after careful study, which may or may not be of
legislative concern.
The Norwood chapter of the League informs and educates
the public on substantive issues in different ways. The
goal for this event is to provide the public with a comprehensive
overview of the Community Preservation Act that will
help voters make an informed decision when they go to the
polls on November 8.
Winter Street Family Dental – Now Open
Based on the idea that teamwork
is better, Drs. Sapak and
Pezeshki formed their partnership
as Winter Street Family Dental in
Norwood. Formerly the office of
Dr. Thomas Hawley, both doctors
were fortunate to be his students
while attending Boston University.
Led by a need to provide better
care for their patients and inspired
by a combined 28 years of
experience, they have established
their office as a fair, honest and
ethical family dental practice that
places these values above all else.
It is their combined mission that
they will do everything they can
to ensure that you have the best
experience possible. That means
knowledgeable dentists, a friendly
staff and a promise that they’ll always
do right by you. It also means
no hidden fees or inflated prices.
Winter Street Family Dental
provides all phases of general dental
treatment for children, adults
Crafting in Norwood is a Community Event!
by Bella Caggiano
Craft fair enthusiasts, mark
your calendars! One of the best
craft fairs in the area will again be
hosted at Norwood High School,
245 Nichols St., on Saturday, October
15, 9 a.m-2:30 p.m.
Every October, the town of
Norwood hosts a favorite fall shopping
stop for crafting fans at the
Annual Craft Affair at Norwood.
This event, however, means a lot
more than just a fun and successful
shopping day. In addition to developing
into one of the premier
craft venues in the state, it is a very
successful fundraiser for Norwood
High School and local organizations.
The 'Affair' includes approximately
70 crafters who travel to
Norwood from all over New England
to showcase their creative
wares. In addition to sewn, crocheted
and knitted pieces, there
will be chocolate and honey, items
for pets, jewelry, holiday decor,
wreaths, stained glass, jams and
jellies, mirrors, paintings, 3-tiered
plates, bags, scarves, soap, wooden
toys, painted glass, quilts, ornaments,
hats and mittens, cards,
plastic canvas, hand towels, hair
bows, hen houses, ceramics, puzzle
lights, decoupage plates and
doll clothes, and much more!
The huge assortments of raffles
are always a popular corner with
chances to win many handmade
items, gift certificates and Mustang
memorabilia!
The history of A Craft Affair
was a brilliant concept created by
former Norwood High School
teacher Paula Pelaggi as a fundraiser
for the Norwood Post Prom
Party. Because of its economical
success, however, it has grown to
not only aid its original beneficiary,
but also provides donations
to numerous Norwood school organizations.
In addition to its positive
attendance figures,
crafters enroll in A Craft
Affair because the day is
truly a community event.
Norwood students and
athletes offer their services
preparing the gym
and setting up tables and
assisting crafters carrying
their items from and to
their cars and providing
their breaks throughout
the day. They also help
run the raffles and bake
sales.
While a large amount
of the proceeds go towards
the Post Prom
Party, any group or team
that has students helping
at the craft fair is eligible to apply
for funds for their club from the
day's profits. Past organizations
have included, Norwood sports
teams, the drama club, cheerleaders,
SAAD (Students Against Destructive
Decisions) and the fine
arts department after school programs.
What is considered one of the
leading craft fairs in the area, A
Craft Affair at Norwood sees an
average of 700 customers walk
through the door, while in years
during a stronger economy, as
many as 1,000 to 2,000 have
bought tickets. With that kind of
popularity, the craft fair is considered
the largest Norwood High
School fundraiser and is typically
able to donate $4,000 to the Post
Prom Party Committee and up to
$300 for each school organization
that applies.
Tickets are $3 for adults, and $2
for seniors and children under 12
and are available at the door the
day of the event. Purchase hostess
gifts and decorative items for the
holidays, or come by and pick out
something handmade and beautiful
as a personal fall present!
Last Paige, Tutoring & Test Prep Practice, Opens in Norwood
Lisa Paige, PhD, is happy to
announce the opening of her new
tutoring and test prep practice in
Norwood Center on Washington
Street.
Lisa, who holds degrees from
Harvard University and Bryn
Mawr College, formerly worked
at the now closed Chyten/4.0
Educational centers in Millis and
Westwood.
“Tutors and families were sad
to see 4.0 Education close,” Lisa
says. “It was the only locally owned
test-prep and tutoring center in
the area, and was staffed only by
tutors with higher degrees.”
Lisa says that although her
practice is rapidly filling, at the
moment she is still accepting new
students. In addition to complete
test prep (SSAT, SAT, ACT, ISEE),
she also offers subject tutoring in
writing, English lit, pre-algebra,
algebra, and geometry, as well
as coaching on the college essay,
Common App and individual college
supplements, and college interviews.
She partners and shares
mutual referrals with local college
counselors and top-quality educators
with expertise in areas she
doesn’t teach (calculus, chemistry,
biology, physics, Spanish, and
French).
Lisa urges parents to help their
teens avoid stress by starting them
early with the New SAT prep.
“With the advent of the New
SAT, students need to start prepping
well in advance, especially
for the reading comp and math
sections,” she says. “The reading
selections in particular can be
murder.”
For that reason, she is offering
free diagnostic tests and consultations
to parents of sophomores
and juniors. “Many of the SAT
readings are from literary fiction
and historical documents students
should be reading anyway,” she
adds. “High school English and
history teachers are doing a great
job, but there is only so much they
can assign. Students need to augment
that with independent reading
or they will be in shock when
they take the New SAT.”
Lisa also consults with Open
Door Education in Acton and
Signet Education in Cambridge.
Who Can Benefit From Physical Therapy
by John Vacovec, Physical
Therapist and CEO of
Physical Therapy and Sports
Rehab, Inc.
Physical therapy is not just
for people who have sustained a
major injury. It is beneficial for
anyone who has been injured, has
a chronic illness or disease, needs
rehabilitation or has difficulty with
mobility. Physical therapists assist
people with developmental disabilities,
neurological conditions,
and those with a prosthesis. Treatments
can often provide an alternative
to surgery and long-term
use of prescription medications
for pain.
plans that aid the patient's recovery
from wounds, broken bones,
neurological damage, jaw pain
and migraines. Physical therapy
is effective for addressing chronic
diseases ranging from diabetes,
COPD and osteoarthritis to brain
injuries, cystic fibrosis and musculoskeletal
disorders.
Physical therapy provides the
expertise and technology to improve
balance and sports performance,
make environmental and
ergonomic changes that facilitate
movement and a better quality of
life. Treatments also reduce the
risk of injury and assist patients in
the use of mobility aids.
Therapies are valuable for addressing
emotional and psychological
issues. They help patients
engaged in smoking cessation,
anger and stress management,
weight loss and substance abuse
programs. Sepsis, asthma, organ
failure and seasonal affective disorder
can all be alleviated with
physical therapy.
Multiple Venues
Physical therapy is typically
administered within the clinic, but
maintenance programs can be
designed for home use. Therapies
are appropriate for patients of all
ages, from premature infants to
seniors. They help injuries heal,
alleviate pain, and work with the
body’s own abilities to facilitate
recoveries.
Current, acute and past injuries
with lingering symptoms
can be treated successfully with
physical therapy. It’s beneficial
for alleviating the rigors and
side effects of cancer treatments.
Therapists offer gait
assessments and training to rid
patients of unproductive habits
and increase the effectiveness
and efficiency of movement.
Therapies can be used alone
or in combination with other
patient’s needs.
Whole-body Wellness
Clinical Pilates, aerobics and
resistance training can be used to
improve flexibility, strength, balance
and endurance. Manual manipulation
and mobilization aids
can help patients with disabilities
or who may not be able to participate
fully in therapy. Treatments
can also be designed to reduce
inflammation that causes swelling
and pain, reducing the need for
prescription medications.
Those engaged in sports will
benefit from therapeutic massage,
dry needling and cupping to ease
stress, improve endurance, balance
and agility, and help in reducing
the risk of injury. Therapies are
safe for women during pregnancy
and in alleviating the discomfort
of breastfeeding. Ultrasounds,
electrical stimulation and heat
and cold therapies are beneficial
for muscle, joint and neurological
disorders and aid in maintaining
the health of soft tissues.
Patients don’t have to sustain a
catastrophic injury to benefit from
physical therapy. If you need physical
therapy, call us directly and we
can evaluate your condition and
begin treatment right away. If
additional treatments are necessary,
we can coordinate with your
this past June recovered a
time capsule that was placed at the
lodge building in 1916. The time
capsule included records, photographs,
newspapers and more, all
of which unfold to tell a story of
the growth and expansion of both
Norwood and of Freemasonry in
the community.
Also included was a smaller
time capsule that had originally
been placed in 1876 at the former
Masonic lodge room at Village
Hall on Washington St. The
1876 capsule has remained sealed
to date, and will for the first time
in more than 100 years be opened
on October 15. All are welcome to
attend. The opening will begin at
Pink Paws Walk Again!
4th Annual Breast in Show Walk, October 30
by Bella Caggiano
Pink hues dominate the streets
of Norwood the last Sunday in
October. On this day, for the past
three years, dogs are take the lead
in the fight again breast cancer.
On October 30, the 4th Annual
Breast In Show Walk, sponsored
by The Soggie Doggie, in S. Norwood,
recruit both two and four
legged volunteers to raise money
for cancer research. The fourlegged
companions will accompany
their families, and all walkers
are invited, with or without a dog!
Participants and their leashed
pets will launch the walk at The
Soggie Doggie, 1159 Washington
St., in South Norwood, at 10 a.m.,
and proceed to Norwood Center
and the Town Common, for a
break and social gathering. The
return trip heads down Central
St., down Guild, Broadway and
VOTE TIM HEMPTON
Washington St., and back to the
salon.
In past years, approximately
120-140 walkers participated,
where almost 80 dogs and even
1 cat (in a carrier) has joined in
the event. Co-owners Becky Collins
and Meghan Terwilliger were
inspired to initiate the walk after
seeing football players wearing
pink in October, the official Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. Both
women have unfortunately experienced
the life-changing effects of
breast cancer within their families
and wanted to reach out to help
find a cure for this devastating diagnosis.
"The idea started as simply
encouraging clients to do pink
creative grooming through the
month of October, Terwilliger
said. "We then thought maybe we
could join in on an already established
walk (Susan G
Comen or Avon) with
all of our pink pets,
but then decided that
we should just do our
own!"
Not available to
attend the event but
want to contribute?
Throughout the month
of October, The Soggie
Doggie enhances its high
quality and creative dog and cat
grooming to raise monetary donations
through their pet services.
All the proceeds from the purchase
of any pink creative color (dye the
ears, tail, paws, etc.), pink feather
extensions or pink nail pawlish will
go directly to The Breast Cancer
Research Foundation (BCRF),
where 100% of every dollar goes
into the fund. Check out their
Facebook Page at The Soggie
Doggie for some great examples
of pink grooming services. Sprayon
color options will also be available
the day of the event.
"Everyone has been affected
by breast cancer in some way,"
Terwilliger said. "We all
know somebody who has either
survived breast cancer, passed
away because of breast cancer, or
is fighting it now. We want to do
whatever we can to help these doctors
find a cure. And who doesn't
love a pink dog?!"
Registration for the Breast in
Show Walk is $30 and each participant
will receive a silicone wristband
and t-shirts (while supplies
last). Walkers with or without dogs
(or cats in carriers) are welcome!
For more information or to obtain
a registration form, contact The
Soggie Doggie, 1159 Washington
St., Norwood, 781-352-3509. The
event will take place rain or shine.
Monthly Pains Relieved Without Medications
Menstrual irregularity or
cramping plagues many women
on a regular basis often interfering
with their daily activities and
can be debilitating for days on
end. Many sufferers turn to overthe-counter
medications (which
are insufficient in most cases) or
prescription medications, such as
birth control pills, and both resources,
often unsuccessful, can
bring other negative ramifications.
For many years, Debbie B. suffered
with painful periods, accompanied
by severe headaches, and
used drugstore medications to respond
to her distress. She thought
after having children these issues
would subside, but to no avail. She
visited her primary care doctor
who suggested she see her gynecologist
to rule out pathological issues,
but no physical abnormalities
were detected. She was advised to
go on the birth control pill, but
had tried that route in the past
with no success. She hit another
dead end.
A colleague suggested she
make an appointment with Dr
Bien at The Holistic Center at
Bristol Square. Upon an exam,
Dr. Bien determined that Debbie
had a severe Candida issue that
had gone undiagnosed for years
which was contributing to her
symptoms. After following a suggested
change in diet, a supplement
regiment and weekly visits
to Dr. Bien, her menstrual issues
disappeared.
Debbie is beyond happy that
she no longer has to live with the
monthly pain and discomfort. To
ensure her discomfort does not return
she visits The Holistic Center
at Bristol Square for maintenance
appointments. If you are suffering
from menstrual issues, do not hesitate
to schedule an appointment
with Dr. Bien at The Holistic Center
at Bristol Square, 1426 Main
“Learn the ABCs of the
CPA” is a forum designed to
help Norwood’s voting public
gather information about the
Community Preservation Act
(CPA). Question 5, asking
Norwood’s support to adopt
this legislation, is on the ballot
for November 8, 2016. The
League has arranged a panel of
speakers to provide information
about the benefits of the law,
the negative side of adopting
this law, how the surcharge will
be assessed to residents, and
how the CPA has evolved in a
neighboring community, which
adopted the CPA three years
ago. This event is sponsored
by the Norwood League of
Woman Voters, and is free and
A Year Later, Healthier than Ever Before!
When Larry Regan joined
New England Fat Loss (NEFL)
in October of 2015, he did not
anticipate a long-term successful
weight loss. He's now in maintenance,
having over 50 pounds of
fat gone and being free of multiple
medications, he happily admits, "I
was wrong."
"I didn't think I would EVER
be where I am today," Regan said.
"I tried everything; working out,
almost every kind of diet there
was, with no success. This was the
first time I ever saw any real results
immediately."
The real triumph for Regan,
however, is that 12 months later,
he is still substantially lighter and
much healthier. At the beginning
of the program, he weighed 232
pounds, had been diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes, had high blood
pressure and elevated cholesterol
counts. He was referred to New
England Fat Loss and his entire
life changed.
"Caring friends brought me
here [NEFL], because I had been
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
and they said they both had success
with it," Regan said. "I could
see it in them. I was pretty upset,
so I was going to try one more
thing."
Armed with a full education on
his personal metabolic food triggers,
Regan is not only more comfortable
within his own body, he
does not feel restrained with menu
choices. Once NEFL's technology
helped identify his individual body
makeup, his outlook on food completely
changed.
"The food list I'm now on, is
food that metabolizes quickly in
my specific body. We all have a
different biochemistry, so we all get
a different food list," Regan said.
"All the foods are listed as positive
or negative, with the negative food
metabolizing slowly. If I want to
eat something that metabolizes
slowly, I combine it with something
that metabolizes quickly
and that can turn my meal from a
negative into a positive."
Today, 60-year-old Regan
proudly declares his entire physical
and mental outlook has changed
from balancing his hormones and
burning fat. He not only possesses
a healthy blood sugar count, he is
medication free, more active and
more confident.
"I am stronger than I have
ever been," Regan said. "I have
the information to maintain balance,
and there is a sense of well
being that I didn't realize would
come along with that. I feel very
comfortable. I wear clothes now
that I never thought I would wear
again. It has even improved my
golf game! I don't hurt anymore,
my knees don't hurt, my back
doesn't hurt. One year ago, I
never thought this was even possible."
What will YOUR health look
like, a year from now? At NEFL
your personal imbalances are
improved right away, and the
pounds of fall off immediately.
Norwood Volleyball
by Christopher Tremblay
After getting swept out of the
Division 2 South tournament in
the first round by Duxbury last
fall, Norwood Coach Paul Nimblett
is optimistic about this year’s
squad moving past the first round.
“I am very excited about the
upcoming year; we have great
senior leadership as well as some
phenomenal underclassmen,”
Coach Nimblett said. “The team
is very deep and I feel that we can
do some special things this year.”
Nimblett was dead on with the
Mustangs doing special things.
In Norwood’s opening game, the
squad did something they haven’t
been able to do in some time, defeating
Brookline 3-1.
Looking to provide the team
with a spark and keep things moving
in a positive way are senior tricaptains
Ally Copponi, the team’s
setter; Krista Bradley (middle hitter)
and Meghan Reen (outside
hitter).
“These girls have been providing
great leadership so far,” Coach
Nimblett said. “They really want
to take this team to the next level
record wise and into the tournament.”
Copponi is entering her third
season as the Mustang’s setter and
not only grown in experience, she
has improved her serve and is able
to put the ball anywhere on the
court that she wants to. Bradley
and Reen are both important all
around players. Bradley is a strong
attacker with a big strike while
Reen is one of the best defenders
on the court and also provides a
huge serve.
In addition to the captains, juniors
Kiki Ryan and Kaylin Reen
will also be looked upon to produce
this fall. Ryan, a middle hitter,
plays at a high level and is looking
to take her game to the next level
with her newly developed jump
serve, while the younger Reen is
more of a defensive player.
Nimblett also believes that the
team’s serving has greatly improved
coming into this season.
“I feel that our serving is the
best that it has been in awhile,”
Coach Nimblett said. “It should
help us greatly and keep opposing
teams on their toes.”
After taking last year off, senior
outside hitter Emma Fleming has
decided to return to the court in
her final season with the Mustangs,
and according to the coach,
it’s like she never took time off.
Sophomore libero Danielle
Currivan has been a huge surprise
thus far.
“She is not only very quick, but
plays aggressively,” Coach Nimblett
said. “She has been huge
defensively despite only being a
sophomore.”
Nimblett will be looking to two
juniors to help the Mustangs back
to the tournament in utility player
Erin Spalding and first year varsity
athlete Shaniya Feney as an outside
hitter.
Although the coach sees the
Bay State Conference being a
tough league to play in, he is positive
that Norwood will be competitive.
“We will compete night in and
night out with the best of them,"
Coach Nimblett said. "Our goal
is nothing less than second place,
but we’re shooting for first. You
can see that the girls are giving
that extra effort. They have grown
NATURE CALLS - Autumn Leaves – Colorful Gifts from Above
By Amy Beaumont
Ahhhhh, Fall in New England!
It is for many people their favorite
season of the year. The warm days,
crisp nights and gorgeous fall colors
are the reasons so many visitors
flock to our region. And while many
of us New Englanders curse out
loud at the very thought of cleaning
up the leaves every year, there is
good reason to consider the benefit
of the fallen foliage. It’s called composting
– and it’s a free yet highly
valuable method of feeding the
plants in our very own yards. Many
of us won’t take the time to compost
but instead head to our local garden
supply stores to pick up so-called
‘safe’ fertilizer.
Truth be told, the majority of
us are largely unaware of just how
damning these products are. In my
research of these dangerous products
for both this piece and earlier
The best and most effective way
to educate the reader in regards
to keeping their families safe is to
state the most important. There are
three elements in fertilizers you find
on the shelves – nitrogen, phosphorus
and potassium. You probably
remember seeing the labels on the
bags in a hyphenated form, such as
15-5-10. What this means is that the
bags weight contains 15% nitrogen,
5% phosphorus and 10% potassium
(adding up to 30%). What is in the
other 70% you might, and should
be asking yourself ? It is not disclosed
and does not have to be disclosed.
Most of us don’t want to believe that
toxic elements aren’t in the other
70%, but they are. And we the consumers
buy these products and unknowingly
spread them all over our
lawns where our children and pets
play. Take a moment to educate
yourself more on this subject by
By composting our own yard
waste and using it in our gardens,
we take back control of our environment.
Composting is very simple
and easy to do. Whether you are a
seasoned gardener or someone
that’s never planted a thing, the following
steps will get you started.
1. There is no one ‘right’ way to
compost. Many seasoned composters
use the two parts brown
(leaves) – one part green (grass
clippings, kitchen scraps, etc.)
ratio, but this is not necessary.
This ratio may accelerate the
breakdown process, but a pile
with a different ratio will still
mature into compost, just at a
slower rate. One can be a lazy
composter. There are many
‘bins’ that can be used to compost
and keep materials contained.
You can order a cedar
wood composter that is super
easy to assemble from www.
hayneedle .com or many other
suppliers. Get online and hunt
around for the best deal.
2. The best compost is cured compost
– piles that are set-aside for
a few months to age. A small
or large pile is just fine – mix it
around with a digging fork when
you feel like getting outside.
You’ll want to add some water
from the garden hose now and
then, to aid in the breakdown
process.
3. Make your composting area
convenient – locate it close to
where your biggest garden is so
it is easier to move materials.
4. Get started now! Even if you
don’t have a designated bin for
the fall, you can start composting
with leaves, grass clippings
and kitchen scraps. Purchase a
bin in the spring instead, when
there are more choices available.
In present day Florida, in a trailer park called “Armadillo Acres”, Betty, Lin
and Pickles sun themselves with complete indifference to ozone depletion. Ever
hospitable, they set aside their sun reflectors to welcome the audience. “The
Girls” also introduce Jeannie, agoraphobic and unable to step outside her trailer,
much to the exasperation of her toll collector husband, Norbert. Just another day,
nothing new, except for Pippi, a stripper-on-the-lam who arrives to stir up trouble
on her five-inch heels! A sparkling irreverence makes this a laugh-out-loud musical
with a country-rock and blues score.
This production contains adult language and situations.
5. Get a book at the Norwood library
on the subject. Learning
the composting process with
educate greatly and advance
your gardening skills.
Remember, creating your very
made fertilizer from compost is
free, gets you outside and puts
you in full control of your garden.
You’ll also learn just by getting out
there and churning your pile – just
like our grandparents use to do.
Buying commercial fertilizers and
‘force feeding’ them the three main
ingredients of nitrogen, phosphorus
and potassium does not in
fact make for good nutrition for
our plants. In fact, it is now well
known through many studies that
these synthetic fertilizers contain
known carcinogens such as lead,
mercury, arsenic, chromium and
countless others. This information
is out there – we just have to look
for it and educate ourselves, and
take the initiative to utilize nature’s
gold. Look around – it is falling all
around us during this most spectacular
season of autumn.
October Action
October is one of my favorite
months for so many reasons. Fall
starts, leaves are changing colors
-many are still clinging to their
tree house homes. There is apple
picking, cider donuts, and of
course pumpkin spice anything
and everything-especially coffee!
But the best part of October
is Halloween. I love Halloween.
Dressing up and being something
you most likely wouldn’t be, scaring
kids both young and old. And
most importantly, chocolate in
every imaginable size, shape and
form. For at least a week after
Halloween (or in my house approximately
four days after), it is
acceptable to have chocolate for
breakfast, lunch, and an after dinner
snack.
And after all, isn’t milk chocolate
a dairy? I mean it says milk
right in the name!
Many years ago, there
was a Haunted Happening on
Out and About
Dean Street. The lady that lived
there spent tireless hours spooking
out her front yard. She had
monsters playing musical instruments
and ghastly grave yard
scenes. I can’t tell you the amount
of times my kids and I would
drive up and down Dean Street
to see her spooktacular scenes.
But alas, one year ghastly
gals and gents stole some of
spooky stuff off the lawn and the
heartbroken Halloween heroine
stopped her scary scenes.
Norwood’s own Civic
Center used to have a haunted
house within its wicked walls
as well. I remember kids (and
grown-ups alike) would line up to
be scared by goblins, ghosts, and
other creeps that go bump in the
night.
Until one day, the Civic Center
decided to halt the Halloween
happening. An indoor yard sale
was held in the Civic gym and
By Dawn C. Fitzgerald
all the terrifically terrifying items
were tagged and bagged to be
enjoyed by others in such faraway
places as Rhode Island ( I know, I
was there looking for creepy crud
and overheard the purchaser of
an enormous skeleton say he was
taking it to his haunted house in
Rhode Island).
Although kids still go Trick or
Treating, and a few still scare up
some decorations for Halloween,
I can’t help but worry if one day
my favorite holiday will come to
a scarily screaming halt. And it
frightens me.
Where there once seemed to
be so many Halloween parties in
grammar school classrooms, celebrations
seem to become more
and more limited. To my horror,
some towns have actually banned
trick or treating because people
think it too dangerous for the kiddos.
I can’t even imagine a world
without getting dressed up and
going out trick or treating only to
come home and gorge on chocolate.
Even now this is still one of
my favorite childhood memories.
I lived in a triple decker in
the city. In order to trick or treat,
I trudged up and down three
flights of stairs barely able to see
in my plastic mask with tiny eye
slits while wearing my extremely
flammable costume to be rewarded
with a teeny tiny 3 Musketeers
bars.
Then and now, the risk of life
and limb was worth it to get that
little nugget of chocolate, or trade
it with a buddy for (hopefully)
something better.
I hope that Halloween is never
halted in our town, but I’d be
scared to not say that with each
year that passes and every additional
town that stomps on Halloween,
I get a bit squeamish that
one day this memory-making
tradition will just end. And that
makes me grimace and aghast
with fright.
WHY ADOPT AN ADULT
CAT?
Kittens sure are cute and wonderful
in their own way, but there
are definite advantages to adopting
an adult cat. What are they?
We interviewed this week's highlighted
cats to find out.
Puddles: You know what our
personality is going to be. Kittens
are still developing, and how they
act may change. Shy? Aggressive?
Cuddly? Playful? Who can tell
how they'll turn out? With us, you
pretty much know.
Bear: We won't chew up the
place. We're not exploring the
world with our mouths, like kittens
and your babies -- we're all
through with that -- so your shoes
are safe with us.
Lyra: We don't tend to do crazy
stuff that lands us at the vet, like
chewing on electrical cords, or
misjudging our jumping ability
and falling. Our wisdom and experience
tells us not to do such
dangerous things.
KEYS TO HEALTH
Autumn is here, and with it
some things to be aware of in
order to keep your feline and other
pet friends safe.
Mouse poison - As the weather
cools, mice seek warm places,
maybe within your home. If you
prefer not to have them as roommates,
choose a way to uninvite
them that doesn't involve poison
because it is also dangerous for
pets. We suggest always considering
safe, humane pest removal.
Symptoms of poison ingestion
can include lethargy, pale gums,
and blood in feces.
Chrysanthemums - They're
lovely to brighten the place up, but
their stems and leaves can cause
your pet skin irritation, increased
levels of saliva, loss of balance,
vomiting, and diarrhea.
Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes
carrying heartworm - They're still
a concern this time of year. Fleas
hang out in damp leaf piles, ticks
hang out in spots where delicious
animals travel by, rest, and eat, and
all three insects are active when it's
above 40 or 50 degrees, including
in your home. Symptoms include
itching, lethargy, weight loss, and
more.
See your vet for more information
on all of these possible health
obstacles. In case of poisoning
and your vet is not available, call
the Pet Poison Helpline: 855-289-
0358 Please be aware there is a
$49 charge, which includes initial
and follow-up calls with experts.
DONATIONS WELCOMED! We
always need litter (Petco’s scoopable
is ideal). We have empty
containers on top of the cage at
the back of the shelter that you
can take to the litter section of the
store. We also need canned and
hard food for the feral colonies our
volunteers look after. Good old
checks are also quite welcomed
- they can help defray our costs .
Selling or Buying a Home?
“Paul has helped me successfully buy and sell several
properties. Paul really understands the local market...
and what you may have to do or not do in terms of
improvements to sell a property....I have followed his
advice and it works everytime.... in good markets and
in bad. Paul is honest and realistic when it comes to
pricing, and works well with everyone. Paul works hard
and was there every step of the way for me. I would
highly recommend him. ” Carrie Shea
Slight Dip in Norwood Listings from Last
by Bella Caggiano
Norwood housing sale prices
continued to rise from August,
2015, to August, 2016. The number
of listings fell slightly this
Part of the contribution for
the rise in average sale price could
Marino Joins Berkshire Hathaway
HomeServices Page Realty, Medfield
Jennifer Marino is happy to
be joining the Kim Williams
Team at Berkshire Hathaway
HomeServices Page Realty as
a referral agent. Jennifer has
her Master's degree from Lesley
University in Early Childhood
Education, and she spent
the earlier part of her career
as a Kindergarten teacher in
Newton for many years before
starting a family. Jennifer has
four young children, and they
are happy to call Norfolk home.
Jenn is a dedicated and thoughtful
professional who would love
to help you and your family find
your dream home.
The Kim Williams Team is
proud to be welcoming Jennifer
Marino. “We look forward to
working with Jenn,” said Kim
Williams. “I have always been
impressed by her commitment
to excellence in all that she does,
especially her volunteerism with
the Norfolk Community League
and our public schools. These
are two organizations that are
important to me.”
Have you had any thoughts
of selling? Are you living in
your dream home now? Would
