The group voted to develop a story board on<br />

the issue of taboo <strong>and</strong> culture. The group<br />

chose to draw attention to this issue in the<br />

classroom context, particularly highlighting the<br />

way taboos <strong>and</strong> culture impedes discussion of<br />

sex related topics in relation to <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />

The story board specifically brings out how<br />

such issues play out between the learners <strong>and</strong><br />

the teacher in a class situation. It also highlights<br />

how the generation gap coupled by taboos<br />

allow the older generation to speak on<br />

matters surrounding the topic of sex rather<br />

than talking about sex <strong>and</strong> how this may<br />

apply to matters regarding <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />

The first question would focus on the<br />

effectiveness of condoms in preventing the<br />

spread of <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>AIDS</strong>. The teacher was<br />

seemingly comfortable in answering this<br />

question, because it‟s a matter that surrounds<br />

the topic of sex (Frames 1, 2 <strong>and</strong> 3). More<br />

curiosity of the learners drives them to ask the<br />

teacher whether oral sex can put them at risk<br />

of contracting <strong>HIV</strong>. Unfortunately the teacher<br />

is agitated <strong>and</strong> in fact offended that the
