WIOC INVESTMENT
STARTS TO PAY OFF
By Joanna Paris
Eighteen months ago the government
of Antigua and Barbuda entered into an
agreement with the West Indies Oil Company
(WIOC), where the government assumed
51% ownership of the company.
It was a strategic move in the Gaston
Browne led administration’s step towards
entrepreneurial socialism, which is
reaping significant results.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Gaston
Browne, has revealed that WIOC has declared
a dividend of 67%. This means that
the government of Antigua and Barbuda
will collect a cheque for approximately
$7 million dollars, which represents its
share of the profits.
“If there is anyone who is speculating
as to whether or not this program of entrepreneurial
socialism is working, this
is a typical example through which the
people of Antigua and Barbuda through
my government, is engaged in entrepreneurship
and would have turned superior
profits into benefits for Antiguans and
Barbudans”, explained the Prime Minister.
He is confident that similar results
will be derived from the recently signed
agreement between the government of
Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean
Union Bank (CUB).
The agreement makes provisions for
the government and CUB to gorge a synergy
to advance the development of the
bank and by enlarge the economy of Antigua
and Barbuda.
January date for new Social Security deductions
By Everton Barnes
The new Social Security
deductions will go into effect
from January first next
year.
That’s the word from
Director of the Social Security
Scheme, David Matthias,
who said with the year
coming to a close it was
felt that it would be useful
to start the new deductions
from the beginning of the
New Year.
Currently, he explained
employees pay SS deductions
on income up to a
maximum of $6,500.00.
For private sector employees,
the current rate is 10
percent of their salaries
with the employer paying 6
percent and the employee 4
percent.
For government employees,
the rate is a little
lower at 9 percent; six percent
paid by the government
and the employee 3
percent.
“At no time is an employee
paying more
$195.00 per month in Social
Security deductions,”
he noted.
However, under the new
regulations that have been
passed by the parliament,
private sector workers’
contributions will rise by
two percent to 12 percent
in January. He revealed that
By Everton Barnes
Two Chinese, believed to be nationals
of the People’s Republic of China, were
intercepted at the VC Bird International
Airport on Saturday attempting to leave
the country utilizing false documents.
Chief Immigration Officer, Annette
Mark, said the two men were attempting to
board a Jetblue flight to the United States
with false documents portraying them as
Canadians.
Mark said she believes that their final
destination was Canada.
The forged documents were spotted by
an alert immigration agent who notified
this amount will be shared
equally by the employer
and the employee at one
percent each.
For government workers,
the overall contribution
moves to 11 percent
with the government and
the employee sharing the
increase equally.
Last Wednesday, Matthias
was invited to the
Cabinet for the purpose
of informing the members
of the change to the Social
Security law, and the
consultations in which the
SSB engaged with various
stakeholders.
Matthias told the Cabinet
that a Trade Union,
the Hotels Association, the
Chamber of Commerce and
the leaders of all types of
businesses came before the
SSB to discuss the imminent
changes.
A government spokesman
said the new law gives
Director of the Social Security
Scheme, David Matthias
the SSB, the right to decide
on increases in age, deductions
and payouts. The
object, according to the
spokesman is to make the
technical experts the final
decision-makers so that the
Social Security system can
be governed by the findings
of the actuaries and the resource
capability, rather
than any other concerns.
Two Chinese intercepted
the police and the men were taken into
custody.
According to Mark the men arrived in
Antigua aboard a LIAT flight from Dominica
on September 13, and they have been
in the country since then. She said a police
investigation is underway and it is not yet
clear what charges they will face.
She added that it was too early to state
whether the incident is related to human
trafficking in any way.
Police spokesman Senior Sergeant
Frankie Thomas confirmed that the police
are investigating the incident and he declined
to provide any further details.

October declared Road Safety Month
President of the Antigua
and Barbuda Road Safety
Group Alice Ho-Tack in
collaboration with the Antigua
& Barbuda Transport
Board and the Royal Police
Force has declared October
month as Road Safety
Month.
After six months of Zero
Fatalities we have suddenly
recorded 5 road fatalities
within three months.
The group is calling on
all stakeholders to raise
awareness through education
and the media, and to
advise the public to be extremely
cautious with the
current state of the roads,
our roads are in a deplorable
state following the
recent floods and tropical
storms.
We have volunteered to
donate signs particularly
for Jonas Road which is uneven
and motorist must be
warned to slow down and
drive cautiously.
The roads must be
shared by motorist and pedestrians,
however due to
the lack of sidewalks we
are advising motorist to reduce
speed and slow down
giving way to pedestrians
who also use the island’s
roadways.
We would like to advise
all road users and drivers
to excising care, caution,
consideration, courtesy and
common sense on the nation
roads.
Our campaign continues
to educate and inform
the nation on the key risk
factors relating to speeding,
seatbelt use, child restraints
seats, helmet use,
cell phone use, driving under
the influence of alcohol
and stray animals.
“Speed is what determines
the outcome of a
crash, whether you live or
whether you die or whether
other people live or die.”
Antigua & Barbuda has
seen the highest recorded
road fatalities in over a decade
with 13 persons who
have fallen victims to road
accidents in 2015, not forgetting
the many more injured
or disabled.
We intend to continue
raising awareness through
education at schools, the
social media, Radio &
Television and pray for the
safety of all road users.
Road deaths are considered
needless deaths and
can be prevented.

Cruise Lines executives impressed
with Antigua and Barbuda
San Juan, Puerto Rico - Antigua &
Barbuda has successfully presented its
Master Plan for transforming its cruise
tourism sector to top cruise executives
and decision-makers at the recently
concluded Annual Florida Caribbean
Cruise Association (FCCA) Conference,
held this year in Puerto Rico from
September 26 – September 30.
In a series of high level one-on-one
meetings, the Antigua & Barbuda delegation
made power-point presentations
showing the impressive improvements
that are already on the way at Port St.
John’s, Antigua.
The presentations shared details of
the already commenced construction, as
well as plans to construct two additional
berths to accommodate the largest ships
currently in operation, and a passenger
terminal to support home-porting.
Additional dredging will also be
made to the turning basin and the approach
channel to the harbour. The delegation
making the presentations was
led by The Honourable Asot Michael,
Minister of Tourism, Economic Development,
Investment and Energy.
Future phases of the project include
environmentally friendly landside public
spaces and 130,000 square feet of
retail space to accommodate high-end
anchor brands shops, as well as a light
railway tram to transport cruise passengers
between the two transportation
hubs at the northern and southern ends
of the harbour.
The entire architecture of the new
landside facilities will be done in vintage
Antiguan Colonial facades to bring
back the charm and character of old St.
John’s which is a major attraction for
cruise passengers.
In the meeting with members of the
influential FCCA Operations Committee,
a presentation was also made promoting
new fuel Bunkering services
now being offered by the Government
via WIOC and Shell, the leading oil
company for fuel bunkering in the region.
This first-of-its-kind offering in Antigua
will allow cruise ships to easily
take on fuel at any of the piers while
they are at berth in Port St. John’s. The
storage capacity of WIOC for 1.5 million
barrels allows Antigua to now offer
this bunkering service at very competitive
prices to its cruise line partners.
The cruise executives were extremely
receptive to this announcement, particularly
when they learned that Royal
Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas had
already made use of the new fuel bunkering
services.
Team Antigua and Barbuda were
complimented for delivering on a
promise made just over a year ago to
offer this added incentive for the cruise
lines to call at Antigua and help the destination
regain its former status as a key
port of call on Caribbean cruise itineraries.
Minister Michael used the opportunity
to leave this takeaway message
with the cruise decision makers. He
said “Antigua and Barbuda has made
tremendous progress in just two short
years in delivering on its promise to its
cruise line partners and local industry
stakeholders.
“We have delivered on our promise
to dredge the harbour, to extend the
Heritage Quay pier and to
provide fuel bunkering as
promised. We have clearly
demonstrated that we are an
action Government, that we
understand and care about
the cruise business and will
do whatever is necessary to
grow the sector for all our
stakeholders and most importantly
for improving the
incomes of the people of Antigua
and Barbuda”.
President and CEO Adam
Goldstein at the end of the
presentation to RCCL, when
asked for his feedback on
the progress that has made
by Antigua, summed it up
in three words, “I AM IM-
PRESSED”!
Royal Caribbean also
confirmed that Antigua’s efforts
have already yielded
tangible results in that the
‘Anthem of the Seas’ will
be making its inaugural call
this December with 5,000
passengers as a direct result
of the extension to the existing
pier and completion of
dredging works.
Additionally for the season
2016/17 the destination
will receive a total of 93 calls
from RCCL up from 81 calls
last season. This represents a
25,000 passenger increase in
total passenger from 213,000
last season to 237,000 this
season.
Other noteworthy increases
in cruise calls for
the future include Princess
Cruise lines who confirmed
that due to the planned improvements
Antigua will be
included in a new seven day
cruise from Fort Lauderdale
to begin in season 2018/19,
which will be calling all year
round.
Meetings were held with
representatives from Carnival
Cruise lines, MSC,
Holland American, Princess
Cruises, Seaborne, and
the Royal Caribbean Cruise
lines (RCCL) who are responsible
for the Celebrity,
and Azamara branded cruise
lines. The itinerary planners
for each cruise line partner
were left with detailed copies
of all the presentations made.
Included in Minister Michael’s
delegation to FCCA,
Puerto Rico, were Chairman
of the St John’s Development
Corporation (STJDC)
Rohan Hector, and General
Manager of WIOC, Gregory
Georges.
CEO of the Antigua and
Barbuda Tourism Authority,
Colin James, and Nathan
Dundas, President of the
Antigua and Barbuda Cruise
Association, also used the
opportunity of this annual
marketing conference to update
cruise officials on safety
and security measures and
the new shore excursions
available to enhance their
guest experience.
The delegation was accompanied
by Mr. Ricky
Skerritt, former St.Kitts
Tourism Minister, who is advising
the Honourable Asot
Michael on matters related to
the Government’s plans for
growing the Antigua & Barbuda
Tourism economy.
Representatives of several
local tour operator companies,
including Tropical
Adventures and Rendezvous
Tours, also travelled to Puerto
Rico and used the FCCA
Conference opportunity to
negotiate and secure more
business for their operations.
In keeping with the importance
of the industry to
all local stakeholder, the
destination also for the first
time assisted a local Cancer
Care Charity group the Pinkback
Program to attend the
Conference, in their efforts
to meet cruise line executive
responsible for tours and excursions
so as to make this
charity available to cruise
guests willing to donate to
a worthy cause while on island.
The progress made to
date in cruise tourism by
combined efforts of the Antigua
and Barbuda Tourism
Authority, The St. John’s Development
Cooperation, The
Ministry of Tourism and the
Antigua and Barbuda Cruise
Association is impressive.
The relentless lobbying
and negotiating for new
cruise calls coupled with the
re-development of the port
and landside facilities means
that Antigua and Barbuda
has regained the attention of
the cruise industry leadership,
and is well on the way
to achieving ‘marquee’ destination
status in keeping with
the Government’s vision for
the industry.

concerning the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) payable by hotels, and therefore,
clarifies the matter.
The ABST payable by hotels from inception was made up of collections from their
guests. This was levied at 10.5% for all hotel revenues. This is significantly less than the
15% other companies pay, but the decision was made to incentivise the tourism industry,
which accounts directly for approximately 60% of the nation’s gross domestic product.
A decision was made in Jan 2012 to increase the chargeable and payable ABST to
12.5% with 2% of the sum to be set aside for use by the ABTA for Tourism Marketing.
It should be noted that the ABTA Board includes a high representative of the Hotel Association.
A process was agreed by the Tourism Ministry, the Tourism Authority, The Inland Revenue
Department and the Hotel Association that two cheques would be remitted every
month to Inland Revenue from each hotel.
The larger 10.5% ABST payment goes into the consolidated fund and remaining 2%
is paid into a separate account under the supervision of the Accountant General who
disburses these funds to the Tourism Authority each month to be used specifically for
marketing.
Some hoteliers seem to believe that the 2% that is paid separately from the 10.5%
ABST is theirs; but it is not.
The entire ABST collected by Hotels, including the 2% for marketing, are revenues of
the people of Antigua and Barbuda collectible by the State; no part of the ABST belongs
to any hotel. Therefore, in paying both the total of 12.5% ABST, they are simply complying
with the law.
In a separate statement, I have detailed, on behalf of the Tourism Authority, precisely
how decisions on spending the money from the 2% fund are taken; the procedures for
accounting for every cent; and the auditing of the accounts by the international firm,
KPMG, and their submission for tabling in Parliament.
The Tourism Authority has a proud record of accountability and transparency which
has been in existence from its inception.

MEDIA RELEASE:
ABTA CEO RESPONDS TO
TRANSPARENCY ALLEGATIONS
(St John’s, Antigua) 3 October 2016 - The Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua
and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), Colin James, has noted allegations made to the
media by Senator Lennox Weston and Mr. Rob Barrett, a hotelier of significant standing.
The CEO regards both Senator Weston and Mr Barrett as reasonable men who, when
seized with accurate information, would not hold to allegations based on insufficient
data.
It is inaccurate to suggest that the financial operations of the ABTA are not transparent.
The correct picture is that the organization has monthly meetings and produces monthly
financial statements, including details of the drawdown of the 2% marketing fund
which must have the expressed approval of the Board.
Each month a detailed list of invoices associated with payments from the 2% fund is
delivered to the Permanent Secretary in the Tourism Ministry and the Accountant-General
to ensure that account is taken of every cent.
Further, the monthly operating report and financials, once ratified at a subsequent
meeting of the Board, are transmitted to the office of the Minister of Tourism as part the
Board’s mandatory reporting mechanism.
Importantly, the Board consists of key stakeholder groups in the industry, including the
Hotels and Tourist Association which is actively represented by Director Andrew Headley,
a distinguished hotelier of a major property in Antigua.
The Board also includes a prominent banker, Director Arlene Edwards and the Government’s
Financial Secretary Whitfield Harris.
An allegation that the Tourism Authority is not transparent wrongfully indicts a cross
section of persons of high repute, and such an unfair and damaging indictment should
not stand.
Note should also be taken that each year the accounts of the Tourism Authority are audited
by the internationally recognised firm, KPMG, and that these audited accounts are
sent to the Ministers of Finance and Tourism for tabling in Parliament.
The Board of Tourism hides nothing and its financial affairs are fully in accord with the
highest standards of accountability.
If further information is required by Senator Weston in the exercise of his duties, or
Mr. Barrett to understand the extent of the Board’s transparency in financial matters, a
simple inquiry would result in the provision of such information.

Bahamian Stuart Bowe named
Caribbean Hotelier of the Year
FAJARDO, Puerto Rico – Bahamian
hotelier Stuart Bowe was named the
2016 Caribbean Hotelier of the Year by
the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association
(CHTA).
Bowe, the Senior Vice President and
General Manager, Resort Operations of
Atlantis Paradise Island, received the
coveted honor at the Caribbean Hospitality
Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF),
hosted by CHTA, in Fajardo, Puerto
Rico on Sunday.
Accepting the region’s premier hospitality
award, Bowe credited his grandmother
with teaching him service and
attention to detail from “cleaning up the
kitchen.”
Bowe’s contribution to the hospitality
and tourism industry spans more than
27 years, having “cut his teeth” in customer
service and management working
at McDonald’s in his teenage years and
entering the industry as a management
trainee.
He subsequently worked his way up
the ladder, storing and absorbing every
experience to hone his leadership skills.
Over the years he has worked in every
department and in nearly all job categories,
from dishwasher to busboy, from
bartender to laundry attendant, from
housekeeping to maintenance, and from
front desk to landscaping.
Stuart earned a BA in accounting in
1986 from Florida State University, an
MBA in marketing summa cum laude
from Walden University in 2009 and
is currently pursuing a PhD in applied
management and decision sciences with
a focus on leadership and organizational
change.
Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie,
in a taped congratulatory message,
described Bowe as “an exemplar” to be
followed by generations of Bahamians.
“He is a manager cum laude, one who
Stuart Bowe receives the coveted award from Karolin Troubetzkoy, President of the Caribbean
Hotel and Tourism Association.
has brought the pursuit of excellence to
his work …(and) on behalf of the people
of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas,
it is entirely on their behalf that I salute
you for all that you have been able to
do.”
“Stuart Bowe personifies Caribbean
excellence. He is disciplined and innovative
and a leader who inspires generations
of Bahamians and Caribbean people
through his accomplishments and his
humanity,” said Frank Comito, Director
General and CEO of the CHTA who previously
served as Executive Vice President
of the Bahamas Hotel & Tourism
Association.
Bowe was posted to Dubai from 2008
to 2010 to oversee the grand opening of
the Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah, serving as
Vice President of Resort Operations in
the Middle East.
Returning to The Bahamas, he became
active in the Bahamas Hotel &
Tourism Association, establishing numerous
school programs to help children
understand the importance of tourism
and career opportunities in the sector.
The junior hotelier program he was instrumental
in setting up in primary and
secondary schools has impacted more
than 4,000 students.
Now in his third consecutive term,
Stuart Bowe is the longest serving President
of the Bahamas Hotel & Tourism
Association, and he currently serves as
First Vice President of the Caribbean
Hotel and Tourism Association.
Also in winners’ row on Sunday, Barbadian
Heather Hinds, General Cook at
The Club Barbados Resort & Spa, was
Mystery Zika case solved: Virus
was spread by physical contact
UTAH, United States –
The mystery Zika case in the
US state of Utah has been
solved, and the answer, as
with so many revelations
about Zika, is something
never before seen with this
virus. Someone seems to
have gotten Zika through
only casual physical contact
with an infected person—the
first such case that’s been
documented.
In July, after a 73-yearold
patient who’d contracted
Zika while traveling to Mexico
died (a rare occurrence in
itself), a second person came
down with the virus. The second
patient had visited the
first man in the hospital, but
had not traveled to any Zika-infected
areas or had sex
with anyone who had. So with
the two known methods of
transmission—mosquito bites
and sexual transmission—out
of the running, it was unclear
just how this second person
had managed to get infected.
In a new paper published
in the New England Journal
of Medicine, the
patients’ physicians from the
cont’d from pg 10
areas of Operations, Sales and Marketing,
Environmental Sustainability and Technology,
the four themes of the conference.
In Operations, Ocean Two Resort & Residences
of Barbados was the winner with special
mention going to Baoase Luxury Resort
in Curaçao and Puerto Rico’s El Conquistador
Resort.
For the best practice in Sales and Marketing,
the winner was Barbados’ Elegant
Hotels Group with The Somerset on Grace
University of Utah describe
just what happened with these
cases:
Patient 2 reported having
assisted a nurse in repositioning
Patient 1 in bed without
using gloves. Patient 2 also
reported having wiped Patient
1’s eyes during the hospitalization
but reported having
had no other overt contact
with blood or other body fluids,
including splashes or mucous
membrane exposure.
The only fluids the second
patient could have
come in contact with are
sweat and tears. A previous
study detected traces
of the virus in the tears of
infected mice; there hasn’t
been any similar research on
sweat. The second patient
probably either had a cut
somewhere on his skin, or
he inadvertently touched his
eyes, nose, or mouth, and
the virus entered his body.
“It should not be able to pass
through unbroken skin,” says
Sankar Swaminathan, the
chief of infections disease at
University of Utah Health
Care, and first author on the
paper.
But a big part of why this
transmission likely occurred
has to do with the uniqueness
of the first patient’s case. It’s
very rare for people to die of
Zika—in this outbreak so far,
there have been only 13 fatal
cases in adults (not counting
deaths from Zika-related
Guillain-Barré). When Zika
patients die, Swaminathan
says, in many cases they
also have a preexisting
condition like leukemia that
compromises the immune
system. In this case, the first
patient, while elderly, was not
immunocompromised. But
his infection was extremely
severe. His blood had 200
million copies of the virus
per milliliter—with a typical
infection, Swaminathan says,
you’d expect to see hundreds
of thousands, and one million
would be considered high.
It’s not clear why this
man suffered so intensely
from what is typically a very
mild virus. He’d had dengue
in the past; it’s possible that
remaining antibodies from
that somehow worsened this
Bay in Turks and Caicos, and Synapse, LLC,
a digital marketing agency in Puerto Rico,
getting special honors.
The recipient of the CHIEF Award for
Environmental Sustainability was The Tryall
Club in Jamaica with special honors going
to Aruba’s Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort and
True Blue Bay Boutique Resort of Grenada.
The recipient of the CHIEF Award for
Technology was the Aruba Tourism Authority
and its advertising agency Concept Farm.
(Caribbean360)
infection. This can sometimes
happen when people get two
different strains of dengue—
the second dengue infection
will be worse. Swaminathan
also speculates that the man
may have had a genetic
immune deficiency that just
happened to be very specific
to this virus.
With infectious diseases,
“there’s some people we find
who get very unusual manifestations
of infections that
99.99 percent of people never
get,” Swaminathan says.
It could be that these people,
though not otherwise immunocompromised,
have specific
weaknesses to particular
pathogens.
Whatever the reason, the
patient ended up with an abnormally
high viral load,
which led to shock, respiratory
failure, and eventually
death. (The second patient
came down with a less intense,
more ordinary version
of Zika.) The extent to
which the virus can be spread
through bodily fluids like this
is a question the authors suggest
needs more research, but
Swaminathan suspects that
it may be the high viral load
that led the virus to be present
in the first patient’s sweat or
tears. Mosquitoes and sexual
transmission are still the main
worries —“For the general
public, this doesn’t really
change very much,” Swaminathan
says—but this case
is yet another surprise pulled
from Zika’s seemingly endless
playbook. (The Atlantic)

more to win a Test. Never has
it been done at Eden Gardens,
where the highest successful
chase took place more than
a decade ago and finished at
120 for 2.
The contribution from
Saha to put his team in such a
strong position should not be
underestimated. He became
only the fourth Indian wicketkeeper
to hit two fifities in a
Test.
On the West Indies tour,
Saha was demoted one spot
from No. 6 with the team
management saying they
wanted to reduce the pressure
on him when they went in a
batsman short. India have not
opted for that combination at
home against New Zealand
but Saha stayed in the lower
order. On his home ground,
he produced an innings that
may well become something
of a signature. He was happy
to take blows to his body from
the fast bowlers.
He used their pace, nudging
them behind point or towards
backward square leg.
And having blunted them, he
gorged on spin. Five of his six
fours and 28 of his unbeaten
58 came off the bowling of
Mitchell Santner. It was only
the fifth time in Test history
that a batsman from No. 8 had
made two fifties in a Test.
There were two Indian
wickets standing on the
fourth morning, when the
pitch showed signs that it had
slowed down. Neil Wagner
For Sale
picked up one of them to move
his career tally to 99. Playing
his 25th Test, he could have
tied with Richard Hadlee’s record
for the fastest New Zealander
to 100 Test wickets but
the final wicket went to Trent
Boult. (ESPNcricinfo)
India claim series and No. 1 Test ranking
At the historic Eden Gardens,
in front of 12,068 people,
India became the No. 1
team in the world with a 178-
run victory over New Zealand
and captured their fourth
series trophy on the trot. It
isn’t groundbreaking for a
team to dominate in their own
conditions. And granted, the
heat and the pitches left New
Zealand feeling out of place -
picture Mr Bean in an MI6 facility
- but when you watch R
Ashwin conjuring wickets, or
Mohammed Shami demolishing
stumps; when you watch
M Vijay leaving the ball or
Cheteshwar Pujara attacking
the spinners; when you watch
Virat Kohli raising his game,
it is difficult not to wonder
whether India have found
themselves an XI capable of
becoming something special.
New Zealand did the best
they could in the absence of
their regular captain and best
batsman Kane Williamson.
He had finally recovered
from a fever to come out of
his hotel room and watch
the match from the ground.
He would have felt proud of
Tom Latham’s polished 74.
He would have enjoyed Matt
Henry’s big-hearted performance.
He would have wanted
to run out to the field when
the ninth wicket fell and do
his little bit for his men. But
376 was too big a target in the
final innings.
The coin was in love with
Kohli, doing as he bid for a
sixth time in a row, in Kolkata.
The weather too wanted to be
on his good side, giving him
the perfect conditions to ambush
New Zealand late on the
second day. In Bhuvneshwar
Kumar, he also had the ideal
weapon to exploit a pitch that
offered seam, swing and variable
bounce. On the fourth
day, when conditions had become
better for batting, India
remained tenacious. They remained
patient. They were a
little petulant too, putting the
umpire under needless pressure
every time the ball hit
pad or beat bat. India often get
on rolls like these. But it isn’t
often that they make it last.
Someone gives it away. A ball
down leg. A wicket thrown
away. This XI, though, may
just be learning to shed those
bad habits.
Take Ashwin for example.
He had seen that Latham had
changed his technique; that
he was taking a shorter front
stride so that he could be in a
better position to play the ball
that doesn’t turn and avoid
being lbw. It paid off beautifully.
He survived the first few
minutes. His footwork grew
assured. A good cover drive
off a half-volley got him going.
A delectable flick shot later
in the innings exemplified
that he was reading the length
early and well. He went to tea
unbeaten on 74.
Ashwin got him in his
first over after tea. The ball
was looped up. It was bowled
wide. It was a tease. Like the
smell of chocolate to a man
who has never eaten anything
other than salad. Latham went
for that sinful cover drive and
the outside edge was taken by
Wriddhiman Saha, moving
smoothly to his left.
And then there was Shami
and his sexy reverse swing.
Henry Nicholls nicked a catch to Ajinkya Rahane.
BJ Watling read that a fuller
delivery was tailing into him.
Appropriately, he brought his
front pad down the line and
made sure the bat came down
close to it. A second later, he
was watching his off stump
cartwheeling all over the
place. The ball had moved
one way in the air and then
promptly the other way off the
pitch to beat the outside edge.
Shami can’t possibly have intended
for that to happen; it
would just be scary if he did.
Twelve out of the 20 wickets
India took in Kolkata went
to the seamers. Admittedly,
the pitch suited them better
in the early stages, but not
often have India made use of
that advantage. On the fourth
day, when conventional swing
went AWOL along with the
uneven pace and bounce,
they used what was given to
them - scoreboard pressure
and reverse swing - brilliantly.
This is why India should
feel upbeat about their chances.
Their fast bowlers aren’t
place-holders for the spinners
anymore.
Ashwin mystifies batsmen
with his flight and Martin
Guptill and Ross Taylor
were the latest scratching their
heads all the way to the pavilion.
One was lbw because the
ball dipped, the other was lbw
again because it drifted away
and as a result the Kolkata
Test claimed the record for the
most lbws in a Test in India.
The count finished at 15.
Ravindra Jadeja went
around the wicket to the
left-handed Henry Nicholls
in the 36th over. From the
amount of work he puts into
his action, a batsman expects
the ball to turn. He often plays
for that turn, or at the very
least, worries about it so much
that it brings uncertainty into
his game. Nicholls was put
through this harrowing sequence
of events and sent on
his way to the pavilion as a
good length ball, holding its
line just outside off stump,
took the edge and was taken
superbly by Ajinkya Rahane
at slip.
Only six times has a
team ever made 376 or
