Swaffham & District Lions
Swaffham Lions had the pleasure of
handing over a cheque to Swaffham
Rugby Club to support their minis
group. In the recent past Swaffham
Lions have supported local football and cricket youth
teams by sponsoring kit for the youngsters.
experience. Brilliantly acted with laughter and tears
and amazing facial expressions, the audience lived
the life of the famous comedy pair. The second
half of the evening took the form of a question and
answer session about Jeffery’s life, this turned out
to be highly amusing and informative. The evening
raised £1000 for EACH.
After two years of running the Swaffham Tesco store,
The £500 cheque was handed over, during their
coaching week, which is run by Leicester Tigers the
famous Premiership Rugby Club. Over fifty under
elevens attended the course, which focused upon the
four main skills, catch & pass, tackle, breakdown and
game sense. Leicester’s community development
team coach all over the world, some of the coaches
have just returned from Japan, where the next World
Cup is being held, coaching young Japanese children.
The England internationals Ben and Tom Youngs,
who play for the Tigers, come from this region.
The Swaffham club have over ninety minis on their
books, who enjoy the sport; some aspire to emulate
the Youngs brothers. Mike Fields, the president of
Swaffham Rugby Club, said that the donation will go
a long way to help kit out some of the youngsters and
make them feel part of a successful club.
A sell out audience at the Barn theatre were
enthralled with the performance by Jeffery Holland
as Stan Laurel in his one man show ‘This is My Friend
Mr Laurel’. A member of Swaffham Lions went to
school with Jeffery and has kept in contact ever
since. When he said that he would bring the play to
Swaffham for the Lions, the Lions decided to donate
the proceeds to EACH as a member of the club lost his
young grandson at a very early age. During his illness
the family were supported by EACH. The play which
has been performed across the country is about Stan
Laurel talking to Hardy about their show business
14
manager Scott Garrod is moving to a different store in
a similar role. To mark his departure Swaffham Lions
presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation for
all the joint work that has been carried out between
the Lions and Tesco. These have included foodbank
collections, diabetes and British Heart Foundation
collections to name a few. The Lions are looking
forward to supporting the new manager when he or
she arrives in a few weeks’ time.
The Swaffham Lions’ annual trip to the circus at Great
Yarmouth took place on Sunday 4th September. A
total of 33 children, parents, and family members
from the Swaffham area joined in the event,
which is organised by East Anglia Lions clubs, and
attracted hundreds of children, parents and carers
from all over East Anglia. The first part of the day
was an enjoyable coach trip to the Great Yarmouth
racecourse. On arrival, the children (and adults!)
were treated to a great show from a children’s
entertainer, before enjoying a picnic lunch. Then it
was off to the circus! The audience were thrilled by
the amazing acts that were on show and the children
particularly enjoyed the hilarious double acts by the
host and his comedian partner. During the interval,
ice creams for all were a treat for children and adults
alike. The second half was a spectacular water show
as the arena was flooded and the artists performed
their acts in and above the water. At the end of the
show, the coach returned the group to Swaffham and
everyone agreed that it had been a wonderful day
out, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
