In Touch With Your Town
The section ‘In Touch with
your Town’ is usually put
together by the Town
Clerk Richard Bishop or
occasionally by the Deputy
Town Clerk Claire Smith. It has
been kept under this heading as it stems from
when the Town Council used to produce its own
‘in house’ newsletter under the same name. It
deals with some of the most topical items of the
day and the odd item where the Council want to
share information with the Town.
Swaffham in Bloom
Congratulations to all involved in Swaffham in
Bloom, on 6th September the town was awarded
Silver Gilt from the Anglia in Bloom judges, a great
achievement. Suffield Court also received a well
deserved commendation as part of the judging.
The project brings together organisations and
residents from across Swaffham and makes the
Town attractive for all to enjoy. The outside
team do a great job looking after the colourful
displays in our Town Centre pots and tubs. We
will now be changing the plants for winter and
hope to have a number of tubs with winter
pansies in place for some winter colour. If you
would like to sponsor a pot, please contact the
Town Council Office.
Merryweather Road Play Area
This play area has been in need of refurbishment
for some time and with the help of Tesco Bags
of Money initiative we will be able to replace
the roundabout and spruce up the rest of the
area in the very near future. We have secured
one of these grants, and now need residents to
vote for our scheme so that we can access the
greatest level of funding and replace some of
the other equipment too. You can vote for this
Swaffham scheme in store from 31st October to
13th November.
Church Gates
The project to re-instate the Church Gates is
continuing and many of you will have noticed
the work going on in Church Walk. The old gates
have been refurbished by a skilled craftsman
and we are now in the final stages of making
sure they are hung and work to the best effect.
It had been hoped that they would be ready to
be opened at the end of September, but due
to unforeseen circumstances there has been a
slight delay. However we are hopeful that they
will be up and open by the end of October.

Cemetery Works
The Cemetery Chapel has recently been re-roofed
and the driveways have been levelled and resurfaced
with Tar-spray and Shingle, it is all looking much
better, with pot holes being filled along the way.
Job Vacancy
At the time of writing a full time (37 hours per week)
job vacancy has just become available within the Town
Council’s Ground Maintenance Team, but the finer
details are not ready in time for this publication. The
advert will be on the Town Hall Notice Board at the
front of the Town Hall, it will be on the website www.
swaffhamtowncouncil.gov.uk and it will be circulated
by Social Media on the Town Council’s Facebook
page and Twitter feeds. A job description and salary
details are available from the Town Hall reception
desk. The deadline for receiving applications will be
Monday 10th October and interviews are planned
for Thursday 20th October.
Christmas Lights Switch On Event
and Road Closure
The Christmas Lights sub committee, made up
of Town Councillors, Swaffham Trade Association
representatives and other interested individuals
are organising this year’s event, it will be on 25th
November. Preparations are well underway for the
arrival of Father Christmas, his Elves and Reindeer.
There will be entertainment from Fakenham Town
Band, Oasis Church singers, Thursford Steam Organ
and much more. The Market Place and road on the
west side will be taken over by a funfair for small
children and a Christmas Market. The Town itself will
be decorated with new lights for this year and these
will be switched on at 5pm. We hope that all residents
will enjoy the event and the way our town will be
lit up this year. So that we are able to prepare and
run the event in the Town Centre, please be aware
that there will be a road closure on 25th November
from 7.30- 10.30pm. The road will be closed on the
west side of the market place, from the Buttercross
roundabout up to the Swaffham Café.
National Power Cut Line 105
A free National Power Cut Telephone Line has been
launched. 105 is a new three-digit number that
people can call to report or get information about
power cuts. A lot of people don’t know who to call to
report or get updates about power cuts, with many
calling the energy supply companies they pay their
bills to. 105 aims to solve this problem, providing
people with an easy-to-remember number that will
put then straight through to their local electricity
network operator. 105 is jointly funded by electricity
network operators and wherever you live, 105 will
put you through to the right network operator
